The Wizard's Tale
Author

Jeremy Hayhow

Jeremy Hayhow lives with a head full of pictures. Much of his work is inspired by friends and family and the countryside around his family cottage where he spent much of his youth. His artistic nature was also nurtured from an early age, and rather than being something he does, he describes it as something he is. His book combines his love of the outdoors, artistic nature and his imaginative spirit with his quest for the richness of life. He is now married with a daughter who repeatedly asks, “Daddy, tell me a story from your mouth.” This is one such story.

The Wizard's Tale - Jeremy Hayhow

    Chapter One: His Lost Wand

panitan.pdf t had not been the best of days for Whiz, and that was not unusual. Nothing could, or probably ever would bring a sparkle of true happiness to the solitary figure that was rummaging through the huge piles of books stacked in the corner next to the window.

Blast, muttered the rusty old voice. Whiz was on the hunt for yet another spell. His whole life, the last four hundred and fifty years, had been devoted to the study and perfection of the mystic arts, leaving little or no time for people. If the truth was known, he had always been rather shy and over many years he had simply convinced himself that contact with the outside world and people would be a hindrance to his work. So with his head permanently buried in a book of spells he had never noticed how alone he’d become.

His style of life could easily be seen by looking around the dusty little spell room that doubled for a bedroom, kitchen and lounge. The solid stone walls were festooned with every type of magical symbol known to the world, some carved deep into the old stone, while others were painted in intricate detail that no human artist could ever have created them with brush and paint. Set in the middle of the largest wall was a fireplace, blackened with soot and ash from the unswept chimney and above it a mantelpiece, empty except for two large candlesticks draped in cobwebs and covered with the wax of countless night time studies. The rest of the walls were covered in shells, upon which stood every shape, size and colour of bottle imaginable, each filled to the brim with potions and spell powders.

A dim light shone in through the small dusty panes of the window, adding to the mystery of this little dwelling, and everywhere the smell of the rusty leather bound books filled the air. In fact there were so many objects of curiosity and mystery that even Whiz himself has long since forgotten what most of them were for!

He grunted to himself and brushed away the cobwebs that had clung to his beard. Tucking under his arm the large book that had been eluding him, he made his way over to the door. The old hinges squeaked open, and Whiz stood for a moment blinking in the strong sunshine.

Perhaps I should mention at this point that Whiz’s full name is WHIZBANGROONINGRONK the third, Wizard of the court of Chedrick, purveyor of spells and searcher of hidden knowledge. His name had always been a problem for others to say hence the abbreviation to Whiz.

As his eyes grew accustomed to the light he walked slowly over to where his latest spell had been carefully drawn out on the ground. Slowly and deliberately the large book that he had been carrying was opened to the correct page. This would not have seemed strange except for the fact that whiz was no longer holding the book in his hands! Instead it hung motionless in the air as if suspended by an invisible thread.

Gathering himself up to his full height he studied the pages and began to recite the ancient spell. All around, the air became filled with a thick mist which seemed to glow with a life of its own. Whiz reached into his pocket and produced a wand, delicately carved and inset with stones. It resembled a miniature totem poll.

Although ornate in its design, his wand held great magical powers and was the focus of all whiz’s magic spells. As it was held out over the spell markings, the air began to stir into a gentle breeze. Whiz paused for a moment to gather his thoughts, then, moving with great swirls of his arms, he began to trace strange
