    Preface

    Whispers are gentle nudges from the Universe. They urge us to take the next steps on the path that leads us to the fullest expression of our being. On the path, we meander, hang back in the familiar, or move forward with resolve. All is relevant. We see in hindsight that everything is preparation.

    For me, whispers are like intuitions—sudden flashes of insight—that often come in answer to prayers that have left my awareness. In writing Born an Eagle among Sparrows, the first whisper came in October 2012 from a dear friend, Scott, who was near death. In my sadness, I was in deep reflection about my purpose. He came to me in spirit and said, Go with new beginnings. He was telling me what I knew but needed to hear.

    The title, Born an Eagle among Sparrows, came to me as another whisper a few months later on June 25 as I took part in a prerecorded past-life regression led by psychiatrist Brian Weiss. During the session, I also saw an image of myself walking alone to kindergarten class on my very first day of school. Steps on the Path came to mind. That afternoon I started writing. Naively, I initially interpreted the title literally and researched newborn eagles and sparrows.

    The next day, my paternal grandfather in spirit whispered to me. He was uncharacteristically serious as he asked, "Do you want to stay or leave?" Not being clear about his meaning, I said
