As Lilibet Rose came down for her breakfast, she noticed a lonely cream-coloured envelope lying on the doormat. ‘There’s a letter, Mum,’ she said, picking it up, and took it into the kitchen, where her mum was.

‘What did you say, dear?’ asked her mum as she hurried to create a breakfast in a race against a ticking clock and as time was running out.

‘I said there is a letter here. It’s a letter for you from an old friend.’

‘Who can that be, dear? Who is it from?’ said her mum.

‘I’ll give you a clue. There are special markings on the envelope. Looks like a small picture of a … house, and there’s a badge on the back … Oh, and a special stamp on the front, which says …’

‘Oh my giddy aunt,’ replied her mum, who wiped her hands on her apron as she prepared to open it.

Lili gave it to her mum.

‘Thank you, darling. It is from you know who. Let me see it,’ she said. Lili gave it to her mum, who looked at it feverishly; her eyes searched every surface, millimetre by millimetre, checking every detail on both sides. She carefully opened it up and pulled out a small white card, which appeared to zap her almost immediately into a zombie-like state.

Lili looked on in astonishment. ‘Well? What does it say?’

Lili’s mum slowly sank into the spare chair and breathed out deeply. ‘Oh my giddy aunt!’ she exclaimed. ‘The Queen has invited us to tea … tea at Buckingham Palace!’

Suddenly Mrs Rose burst into sharp, frantic movements, as if she had been tasered or received a huge electric shock. ‘Ooh … ooh … oh.’ She started to shake all over; her hands seemed to hover and flicker. Then she squealed, ‘I know … I know … Oh my giddy aunt, oh my giddy aunt. It’s from the Queen. She’s invited us to tea … in bloomin’ Buckingham Palace of all places!’ With that, she sat herself down and tried to calm herself with a sip of tea. ‘Well, I never,’ she continued. ‘Well, I bloomin’ never … you can knock me down with a feather. The Queen of England has invited us to her house for tea. Look, Lili. Look.’

Both Rose family members were mesmerised as they read and reread the invitation card. It was from their old friend the Lord Chamberlain.
