About this ebook

CHERISHED MEMORIES is a poetic history of a loving family spanning six generations from the mid-1850s to the present. Love, romance, humor, joy, sadness, loss, and survival have fifi lled my years. Then, ultimately, contentment is mine. Everyday happenings and surprises are the inspiration for the poetry within these pages. My book is an optimistic view of the tapestry of life. I hope my poetry brings you joy.

    Six Generations

    Maternal Great Grandparents

    Ben

I don’t know much about Grandpa Ben, Dad’s Dad died before I was born.

Struck by a newfangled automobile from his family he was torn.

Dad’s Grandfather Abraham Himmler, Great Grandfather and Uncle were Rabbis, first west of the Mississippi.

They wanted him to follow in their footsteps, but he did not agree.

At times withdrawn, he is a very understanding soul.

Full of energy and ambition he excels at every goal.

According to my Nomenology book these are the traits of Ben.

I can’t help but wonder how many applied to this special man among men.

    Eva

During our trip to New York we saw Dad’s Mom Eva when I was nine.

Tall and slender, coifed white hair. I thought she was elegant, divine.

She stood by the turquoise wrought iron railing, a smile on her face.

Dad ran up the stairs two at a time and held her in a long, loving embrace.

I wish I could have known her better, but we lived in far off L.A.

Soon after our visit to New York she suddenly passed away.

I was just nine, still I missed her more than my words could express.

Don’t postpone time with loved ones. Our days are not limitless.

    Maternal Great Grandparents

    Libby and Louis

I inherited my love of baking from my Grandma Libby.

Cousins around the table, I made my first strudel when I was three.

Grandpa sold candy and comic books to local establishments,

Then was a New Jersey mailman until his retirement.

Mom and I spent every other summer with Grandpa Louis and Grandma Libby.

By twelve, six times by car or train, I had traveled cross country.

Astride Grandpa’s ankle, and holding his hands oh, so tightly

He bounced me up and down singing, Pony boy, Pony boy, I shrieked with glee.

My cousins and I waited for the horse’s clop, clop on the cobblestone.

We each had a penny to buy any flavor ice cream cone.

On Sundays I was trusted with two pennies in my hand

By myself to buy the humungous paper from the corner newsstand.

Mom scrimped and saved, sent two tickets for her parents to stay with us three.

A large party was planned to celebrate their 50th anniversary.

All went well until they discovered they were married just forty-nine years!

Grandma feared tempting the Evil Eye. A year later, relieved, she cried happy tears!

Our dear Lori Elizabeth was named for Louis and Libby

And became a mensch just like they used to be.

By the way, George was named for his paternal Great-Granddad.

I hope he likes his name. His Oma was very glad.

    Paternal Great Grandparents

    Margarete

A book to celebrate our marriage written by Max’s Mom lovingly

Introduced his grandparents, long gone, and welcomed me into the family.

Margarete helped without being asked, some thought it interfering.

Max said she was very strict, but her generosity was quite endearing.

Magarete loved to laugh, and her family meant the world to her.
