The Edison Project - David McCune

    Chapter 1

    Dancing

Come on, Lisa, we need to leave in the next few minutes… you know how I hate to be late, I say in my somewhat forceful voice.

Tim, has anyone ever told you that you worry too much? Lisa says while laughing.

I find it is important to be punctual! If everyone is on time, then everything is in order. Not sure why Lisa hasn’t figured this out. Oh, well, maybe Lisa is right—I do tend to worry.

Okay, Tim, I’m ready. We don’t need to be late for the dance this evening, Lisa says with a big smile. You know after being married for nine years, Lisa has never lost her quick wit. My wife, the mother of our child, and my dance partner. I could not be happier.

Tim, did the Carlton’s say if they were coming to the dance this evening? Lisa asks in a pleasant tone.

I believe they are coming; you know how they like to cut a rug, I say laughing.

Well, the last time he asked me to dance, I obliged, and his wife, Debbie, gave me a sort of dirty look, Lisa says in a low tone.

Don’t worry about it; more than likely she forgot to take her medicine and was having a panic attack, I say.

Are you serious? Is it safe to be around her? Lisa asks in a low but audible voice.

I just made up the story; she’s just jealous, I say with a smirk and a faint smile.

Tim, I don’t know what I’m going to do, she replies while giving me a slight love punch.

Well, maybe I’ll make it up to you tonight, I say laughing.

Oh, that makes a difference, Lisa says while giving me another love punch.

Best be careful or you might damage the goods, I say with a mischievous smile.

Oh, Tim, what am I going to do with you? my Lisa replies.

Hi, I’m Cindy Barksman, I’m the official greeter and would like to welcome you both to the New Year's Eve party, the young lady says with a perky demeanor.

Well, Ms. Cindy Barksman, we are the Andrew’s: this is Lisa, and my name is Tim, and it is a true pleasure to be here this evening, I reply with a smile.

I’m sure you will have a great time, and again… welcome to the Friday night social, Cindy says again with a cute smile.

Now, who does she remind you of? Lisa says, giving me a big smile.

I’m so glad we decided to take dance lessons two years ago. Yeah, we had a good marriage but now we’re so connected. I just love to dance with Lisa. When she spins round and round, it just makes everything feel right in the world. And, no doubt it has given her a level of self-confidence that makes both of us feel great. Hard to believe how dance lessons can bring a marriage alive.

This is a nice table, is this table alright, dear? I ask sincerely.

Oh, this is just wonderful, this is the table I would have selected too, Lisa politely replies.

Well, just maybe I was reading you, I quickly respond.

Getting a little deep, sweetie; might want to hold back just a little… would you care to dance? she asks while taking my hand and leading me to the dance floor.

I love an aggressive woman, I seductively answer back.

I love the waltz: one and two and three and four and one and two and three and four and one and two and three and four and spin and return and one and two and three and four. This is just so much fun. Dancing is the best. It’s like the floor is a musical instrument, and one plays the floor. Dance fever, oh yeah!

    Chapter 2

    Lost

We venture out into the unknown; Lisa is firmly secured to my side as we slowly pace forward. Not sure where this madness will begin or end. Not really a path we are walking on—sort of like nothing beside nothing and next to nothing. Not sure where the light source is coming from. It looks like it comes from the windows in the dance floor room. Still, the farther we distance ourselves from the windows, the light remains a visual constant.

There appears to be a glowing form ahead. I guess we should go toward it. At this point, what is there more to do? Lisa is unknowing… what, no frame of mind! I am not doing that well at this point! What is that glow ahead? The ambient light around us is dimming. Where are we… what in the hell is going on… this is just great!

Tim, what is that glowing image up ahead… Tim, answer me, what is that glowing image? Tim, why are you not answering me, Tim? Lisa asks.

Time appears to slow down and my legs are getting so heavy and I am sleepy. Lisa, Lisa, how are you feeling? I ask with a sluggish tone.

Well, I’m feeling a little tired, but that lighted image seems to pull me forward and give me some form of strength, Lisa replies in confused demeanor.

I turn around and can no longer see the light from the windows of the dance floor room. What is this strange image that pulls us forward?

Tim, I’m not sure about this anymore… I believe we need to go back to the dance, maybe we can get into another door… let’s just go back, I’m scared! Lisa says in a persuading tone.

Lisa, maybe, just maybe the image or the light will… I don’t know, will let us… I don’t know. Maybe we should go back, I reluctantly reply.

We turn and I hear an earth-shattering sound as my body is thrown forward.

    Chapter 3

    Crash

Man, what has happened? My neck, oh, my neck.

Lisa, Lisa, are you alright? We must have been in a wreck. I think I feel blood all over my face. Lisa, Lisa, are you here? I ask in a choking voice. I hear sirens in the distance as I reach my arm out to hopefully discover Lisa in the car seat beside me. I feel nothing. Lisa has vanished!

Lisa, Lisa… Lisa, where in the hell are you? I call out repeatedly.

Sir, sir are you alright? a stranger calls out.

My wife, my wife, where is Lisa? I frantically call out.

What is your name, can you tell me your name? the voice calls out.

My name is Tim Andrews, and I can’t find my wife Lisa. Can you please help me find Lisa?" I plead. She is wearing a blue dress.

Mr. Andrews, you have been in a wreck. Your car has apparently flipped over, and the passenger side door is open. The paramedics are searching for your wife, the strange voice echoes again and again.

Okay, let’s get him out, and, my God, let’s just keep in place for the time-being, I hear a faint vanishing voice and then darkness follows.

We need an airlift if we are going to save this guy, and we need it stat! the paramedic cries out on his microphone. Have any of you seen his wife? Come on, gang, I know she is out there. Time is running out, the paramedic states.

Jim, we found her… no vitals… sorry, a voice comes forth from the woods.

Check the ETA on that helicopter; if he has a glimmer of hope, we need to transport fast. He’s lost a lot of blood and is in shock, the paramedic calls out to his supervisor.

Jim, it’s going to be at least thirty minutes before the copter can get here; they are doing the best they can. The supervisor relays the information.

Both your legs are severed. We have applied pressure above the loss, administered fluids, and there’s not much we can do for you, Mr. Andrews. The transport will be here in less than thirty minutes, and we thought you would want to know what is happening. If you have not made peace with your maker, now would be a good… I hear Jim’s faint echoing voice.

Jim, why in the world did you tell him that? Hanks states in a condoning voice.

Hank, if you were in his place, wouldn’t you want to grasp the last minutes of your life? asks Jim.

I know, but it is against protocol and… I know… let’s just forget it, Hanks says in a comforting voice.

Well, old buddy, looks like this is the end. Who would have thought a car wreck would be the obstacle to take me out! After all the tours in Afghanistan and Iraq, now I am dying as a result of a car wreck in the states. And, Lisa is dead.

    Chapter 4

    Love

It is the perfect love story.

Tim and I met in college. Both of us are engineering majors, and we are fascinated with construction. I find a career in the private sector, and Tim is commissioned in the Army. I am proud as I place the first bars on his uniform. I’m working for an architect and help handle a few small projects. I’m sure Tim will be a first lieutenant by the end of the year!

Time passes and five years six months and three days after our glorious marriage, Amelia comes into our lives. A blessing from God. The daughter of our dreams is here, strengthening our bond.

Tim is so excited. He made all the furniture for her room, and I decorated. We have the perfect partnership and now have the perfect daughter. I love my life and am so happy.

Twenty-nine, happily married with a wonderful child, and living in Fayetteville, NC. I am enjoying living in the downtown. We have a train track in front of our three-story townhouse. Not everyone can say that. Amelia really perks up when she hears the train whistle! I feel safe here.

Tim is in Afghanistan, the only problem with his military career. This is what we talked about before we decided to wed. I just need to keep telling myself this when I wake up alone at night.

Amelia, Daddy’s coming home today, I say while gentling lifting her from the bed.

Tim’s been gone for nine months, and he will happy to see me and his little Amelia! Just about have the house finished. Let’s see, he should be here around four; that gives us three hours, Amelia.

    Chapter 5

    Adventure

Major Andrews, Colonel Smith needs to speak with you, a corporal says while saluting me.

At ease, Corporal. Tell Colonel Smith I will be right there, I instruct.

Colonel Smith, you wanted to see me, sir, I address and salute.

At ease, Andrews, the Colonel instructs. Andrews, I selected you to head engineering on a project; a briefing report will be handed over after we land at Bragg. That will be all, Major, the Colonel instructs while saluting.

Thank you, sir, I speak while saluting.

I wonder what kind of project I will be working on. I hope it will be at Bragg. I have been stationed out of Bragg but always deployed.

Major Andrews, I have been instructed to deliver this to you. Corporal Simmons will accompany you to your assignment headquarters, the sergeant instructs as he salutes.

Sir, please follow me, Corporal Simmons instructs.

I have never been to this part of the reservation. Well, I will be finding out soon what this is all about. Brace yourself, sir, the corporal instructs. Whoosh… what in the world is this! Brace yourself, sir, the corporal instructs. Follow me, sir," the Corporal instructs.

This is your office, sir; I will be outside at my desk, sir, the Corporal instructs and salutes. "That will be all, Corporal, I instruct while saluting.

I sit down at my desk and open the sealed envelope marked THE EDISON PROJECT.

On this date, April 22, 1917, under the direction of President Woodrow Wilson, the Edison Project is to be implemented.

A war of a greater magnitude than man has experienced at hand foreseen. The World powers of Austro-Hungarian Empire, German Empire, Ottoman Empire, and Kingdom of Bulgaria combined to form The Central Powers. All avenues of scientific direction will be considered. Time travel must be perfected and utilized if needs of dire consequence take place.

Well now, I wasn’t expecting anything like this. This is quite some information to have on a cover sheet.

Knock. Sir, I have been instructed to take you to the accelerator area, Corporal Simmons instructs.

We walk down a long, well-lit corridor and come to a secured door. Sir, you need to be processed for security clearance; enter through the door, Corporal Simmons instructs.

The two security guards open the two swinging doors in perfect harmony.

Major Andrews, I’m Doctor Jackson. We need to identify your body; come this way, the doctor instructs. Please remove your clothes, step into the chamber, and close the door behind you. This will be a new experience, he says with a slight smile.

Okay, I’m standing here naked in a tube. Not expecting this when I woke up this morning. He’s right; this is a strange sensation. I feel a strange, tingly feeling, and he is right—this is weird. Feeling just a little lightheaded. My organs—I can feel my organs. Breathing in an out, I can feel my lungs expand and contract. The oxygen in my blood—it’s flowing through my body, this is actually feeling great.

Okay, Major, we’re finished. Step out and dress with your new uniform. Your personal articles are in your desk, the doctor instructs me.

Time to get dressed. Uh, these are different. These are different; this does not look like… and what is this strange silky material? Oh, well, this has been the strangest afternoon. Okay, all dressed up for… not sure. Okay, back to my office.

Major Andrews, please follow me back to your office, Corporal Simmons instructs.

Back in my office, I recover my personal property and open the envelope again.

The Edison Project will be located at Overhills Estate Camp Bragg. Camp Bragg is a small, elite military base located near Fayetteville, North Carolina. The facility is 500 miles from West Orange New Jersey and 700 miles from Fort Meyers, Florida. Thomas Alva Edison is charged with monthly visits as he travels between his summer and winter homes. The United States Government partner in this joint project is the Rockefeller Corporation. The Edison project will be built and hidden underground on the Rockefeller property which is adjacent to Camp Bragg. Mr. Edison and his family will stay in the Rockefeller estate during periodic visits. Progress reports will be presented on Jekyll Island, Georgia, which is located 350 miles south of Fort Bragg and 350 miles north of Fort Meyers, Florida.

Wow! They built a time accelerator!

    Chapter 6

    Experience

Knock. Major Andrews, you need to follow me to the time accelerator, Corporal Simmons instructs.

Once again, I follow Simmons down the hallways. I am not sure of anything at this point, and they want me to be in charge of this project? Yeah, this is the strangest day of my life.

Major Andrews, I’m Doctor Howe. I will give you the briefing on the Edison Project. The capsule and its contents become engulfed in a flow of electrons. This is a direct current circuit. To go forward into time, the capsule accelerates in a positive flow; to return, the polarity is reversed. This process was perfected in the late teens. We possess the power to control history… both past and future, Doctor Howe states. For you to get the true impact of this project… you need to experience time travel, Doctor Howe says with a smile. Simmons, go ahead and suit up the Major, and I will accompany him on the mission… . Simmons, you come along too… if he passes out, you can help pick him up; I’m getting too old for lifting. Let’s meet at the transport facility in an hour, Doctor Howe states.

Yes sir, Doctor, Corporal Simmons replies. Major, let’s get to the canteen and get something to eat, Corporal Simmons instructs.

The canteen, I have not heard that name in years, Corporal, I say. One would say this place is timeless, Simmons says cracking just a little smile. Simmons, this is the first emotion I have seen from you," I say laughing.

Never have I seen such an array of food at a military facility. The meat-carving station was the best—ham, turkey, and prime rib. I feel like I am having my last meal… . maybe there is danger in time travel, and this group knows something.

Okay, Major, we need to get back to the transport facility, Corporal Simmons says while standing up.

Well, Doctor Howe, Simmons and I are ready when you are, I say with a smile.

Major, have you ever experienced really fast acceleration or… fast breaking? Doctor Howe asks.

Well, not actually, no, I never felt anything like that, I say looking down.

Well, Major, have you ever had a fleet enema? the Good Doctor jokingly asks.

No, Doc, I can’t say that I have, I hesitantly reply.

Well, Major, I am going to be honest with you. The first couple of times, most shit themselves. But after a while, the human body gets use to it, the doctor chuckles.

Not sure of what to think about all this new information, I remain silent…

    Whoooosh… .

Wow, this is the most amazing sensation that I have ever experienced… don’t get me wrong if I compare it to sex, I say in a shocked voice.

Believe it or not, Edison says the same thing, Doctor Howe informs me.

Okay, guys, just where we are, or should I ask when are we? I ask in a very puzzling voice.

We are at Camp Bragg and today’s date is April 22, 1917, says Doctor Howe.

Oh, Earth Day, wait—this is the ground-breaking of the Edison Project, I state very sure.

You are right and unknown to most, there is a direct correlation with the Edison Project and Earth Day. In the sixties, it was determined our environment was changing and public focus needed to be placed on our planet. We sort of helped introduce our concerns to a few senators and sure enough, April 22nd was selected since this date ultimately changed the world in 1917. It is pretty much our little secret, and I guess our celebration. I am sure you are ready to observe. Remember, you can see, feel, touch, smell, and feel the world around you. To this world, you are non-existent. Simply put, they can’t see us, and we have no control over their present lives, but we can affect the outcome, the Doctor informs me.

    Okay, I reply.

Get ready to see history being made, Major, Sir, Corporal Simmons informs me.

    Chapter 7

    Edison

We step out of the accelerator and before us are a group of military and civilians. Then, a silhouette of an elderly, distinguished-looking gentleman catches my eye. Wait, let me guess, that’s Thomas Edison. I am in 1917 prior to the U.S. entering World War I.

Doctor Howe, Doctor Howe… . that’s odd; what’s up with him? I call out. Corporal Simmons hands me a piece of paper that reads, remember we cannot hear each other, only observe when outside the accelerator. Oh, I forgot, I look at him and slightly shrug my shoulders.

Okay, gentlemen, gather round. We need to have something formal as we set forth on this mission that will take us somewhere. Edison, you or Rockefeller have anything you want to say? a man in a brown suit and top hat speaks up. Edison looks over at the small gathered crowd and says, Gentlemen, we are about to embark on a journey that will change history as we have known it. And perhaps even Mr. Rockefeller will find favor in what I add to the project.

Edison, get over our differences, Rockefeller snaps back.

There is a large generator, controls, and wires going in all directions. Everything appears a little makeshift. Trucks to our left must have brought this apparatus in the middle of nowhere. I assume they want to test the contraption prior to construction of the facility.

All stand and wait. The capsule before us looks much like the accelerator we recently arrived in. Imagine watching our past history take place right before your eyes. Two individuals in different attire enter the capsule and are strapped into their formed seats. The capsule door closes, and the onlookers begin to slowly back up. Edison nods his head and keeps his eyes on the capsule. Whoosh! The capsule vanishes. A loud cheer is heard, and Edison and Rockefeller shake hands while patting each other’s backs. All reassemble and stand patiently in the warm sun. Whoosh! The capsule appears. The door opens, and the two, now time travelers, are welcomed back with rounds of applause.

Dr. Howe looks over at me and motions for me to follow him. He hands me a piece of paper. This was one of the last times John D. Rockefeller was seen. Today, he leaves for his home on Ormond Beach, Florida. He dies at the age of 98. They say he had two goals as a child: to make a hundred thousand dollars and live to be a hundred years old. Howe smiles and looks over at Rockefeller. Rockefeller’s last big investment is a partnership with the government in the investment of the Edison project.

Dr. Howe walks toward our accelerator and motions for me climb aboard. I prepare to return to the present day that we left and note Howe is setting the date for August 6, 1945, location, Hiroshima, Japan. Whoosh! We sit in the accelerator and peer out the observation panel. A large flash of light appears in the sky, followed by oscillating movement. Strong wind and fires destroy all that is around us. Then silence. Howe programs in Home. Whoosh!

    Chapter 8

    Insight

Howe, I just know you are going to inform me of what I just witnessed, I ask in a somewhat pleading voice.

That was the first atomic bomb we dropped on Japan to end World War II, Howe states with a cold look on his face.

So we knew we were going to drop the bomb when we entered World War II? I ask with a puzzled look on my face.

We knew we were going to drop the bomb before the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, he said with the same cold look.

I don’t understand… why don’t we do something about all of this before it happens? I ask in an angered tone of voice.

Like I said earlier, we can only observe; we cannot change history, Dr. Howe reminds me.

Simmons walks me back to my office, and I sit quietly at my desk. Flashes of the Kennedy assassination, King assassination, Vietnam, 9/11… my God, they knew about the towers… the government knows all before it ever happens! I put my head on my desk and close my eyes. So this is the project. I am to be the eyes of the future for our government.

There is a knock at the door and Howe enters. Howe, can I ask you just one question about what I have seen? I look straight in his eyes. Why do we do nothing to avoid catastrophic events of the future?

    Simple answer, Major, population control.

    What? I ask.

As of now, there are 7 billion people on the planet. Some believe we maxed out at 5 billion. Others would like to get it down to 4 billion. Our estimate is that World War II helped eliminate around 1 billion past, present, and future inhabitants of planet Earth, he states. So this is the reason we don’t alter time, I ask cutting to the chase. Yep, Howe answers. Can you imagine what the unemployment rate would be if we were in the life-saving business? he asks while walking out the door?

Wait, Howe, do very many people know about this project? I ask.

Sorry, Major, that’s classified information, he replies with a crass smile.

I decide now will be a good time to study the Edison Project in more detail. I open up the file on my desk.

The Edison Project will be located at Overhills Estate near Camp Bragg North Carolina. Camp Bragg is a small military base located near Highway 301; it’s 500 miles from West Orange, New Jersey, and 700 miles from Fort Meyers, Florida. Thomas Alva Edison is charged with monthly visits as he travels between his summer and winter homes. The United States Government partner in this joint project is the Rockefeller Corporation. The Edison project will be built and hidden under ground on the Rockefeller property, which is adjacent to Fort Bragg. Mr. Edison and his family will stay in the Rockefeller estate during periodic visits. Progress reports will be presented at Jekyll Island, Georgia, which is located 350 miles south of Fort Bragg and 350 miles north of Fort Meyers, Florida.

April 22, 1917, Ground-Breaking Edison Project camp Bragg, NC, prior to ground-breaking, there is to be a test of the time capsule on the Camp Bragg compound. Demographics may control the outcome, so this location must be tested. Once the time travel tests are conducted and complete, the construction of the facility will begin. A small facility is located at Fort Meyers, Florida. All prior testing has proven to be conclusive and on track to the expectation of the U.S. Government and the Rockefeller Foundation.

I want to put my head back on the desk and close my eyes.

So let’s see: in 1937, the government knew they would drop an atomic bomb in 1945 and set their plan in motion by funding Westinghouse with the information they obtained from Edison, all in the name of reducing the population and keeping unemployment down.

I felt sick at my stomach. This was way more information than I thought I was going to be subjected to today. My mind raced with wild random thoughts. So why are there so many people on the planet now, and why did they let unemployment get so high? My God, I am starting to think like them, those who are in control and running all of this. They know the answer to the question before it is even asked.

And, John D. Rockefeller, what part did he, for that matter, is he, playing now? I remember watching the History Channel, and the story was about him and the company he founded, Standard Oil. Prior and during World War II, Standard Oil controlled the vast oil supply. Standard Oil sold oil to both the Allied and Axis powers during the war. I thought this was odd when I watched the documentary. Standard Oil could have halted the war by ceasing sales to the Axis. Now I understand! Not sure if this new information is good or bad. This is beginning to answer so many questions as per the discussions back in college during the political science debates. Too bad I didn’t have the insight I have now.

    Chapter 9

    Homecoming

Major Andrews, I have been instructed to drive you to your home residence; are you ready, Sir? Corporal Simmons asks.

Yes, Corporal, I am ready to see my family, I reply with a smile on my face.

On the way back to our home in downtown Fayetteville, Simmons says nothing. There is no casual conversation. Upon arrival, he states he will return at 0600 hours the next morning, He opens my door. I exit, he opens his door, gets inside, closes his door, and slowly departs, with no salute.

It is good to be home. Not wanting to startle Lisa or Amelia, I ring the doorbell. Moments later, Lisa opens the door, and it is a three-way hug. We take the elevator to the third floor, and I think back to the confinement of the accelerator. Both are about the same size—maybe the elevator is what gave Edison the idea. However, ours doesn’t go Whoosh!

What are you smiling about, Tim? Lisa says while kissing me.

Oh, I am just happy to be home with you and Amelia, I say with a smile. The elevator door opens, and we step out; then close the door. Boy, it is good to be home.

Tim, why don’t you lie down, and I will get you a glass of Cabernet, might even get me one too if I dare, she says with a frisky laugh.

Amelia, sit here beside Daddy, and I will be right back, Lisa says while giving Amelia a hug. I am not quite sure Amelia knows who I am. She is three, and I have been gone much of her life. Amelia looks up and says, I love you, Daddy!

Besides hearing I do from Lisa, this is pretty good—a great welcome-home day!

Lisa, Amelia can talk, I shout out. From downstairs I hear, And sometimes, she never stops.

Well, Amelia, you can talk as much as you want to me, I say with a chuckle.

As I lie in bed and begin reflecting on the past 24 hours, I think about the movie, Independence Day. The President was never briefed on the alien spacecraft. Having a high-security classification, I somewhat concluded that elected officials come and go, but the government is here forever. I have noticed that congressman and senators were never privy to top-secret information. I wonder who knows about the Edison Project. Until the unexpected death of FDR, Truman knew nothing about the atomic bomb. Perhaps even the President is for show and the government has them dance around like a marionette.

Here’s your wine, honey, Lisa says with the usual big smile on her face.

I haven’t had a glass of wine in a while. Funny how I miss the simple things. Well, I am home and with my family, and it is a great day.

Lisa, let’s go across the street to the Blue Moon for dinner; how does this sound? I ask.

Sounds like a plan, and Tim, keep your uniform on, I want to show you off, Lisa replies.

I might as well relax and enjoy the wine. I know it will take Lisa a while to get ready.

So, Amelia, how is Daddy’s big girl? I ask while scooping her up in my arms. I walk over by the window, and we both look out. Train Amelia says while pointing out the window.

That’s right, Amelia. there is going to be a train coming down the track soon, I say while bouncing her in my arms.

Movement and time are one. The present is the past, and all we have is the future.

Time travel… wow! This will be the most interesting assignment in my military career. I wonder what the future will hold for our country. There is so much division in the land.
