The Silent Mourner - Michelle Georgina Orta
Prologue
I just stood there as the doctor delivered the news. I didn’t know what to say. I stayed quiet. I didn’t know what to feel. I wasn’t really sure I knew how to feel.
I slowly sat down and looked at my parents holding each other, crying. The doctor and nurse were there, speaking in low tones, trying to comfort them and saying how sorry they were that they had done all they could. I felt alone and scared sitting there crying. I was numb, I couldn’t feel my tears on my face but I knew they were there.
The doctor’s words roared in my head, repeating over and over, I'm sorry, Mr. and Mrs. Carson...Elizabeth didn’t make it. We did all we could.
Lizzy was dead.
My older sister was gone. She was only 18 years old. And all I could think about was its my fault. My fault she’s dead. All mine. I felt lower than low.
It’s been a year since it happened; I still miss her, and I always will. This story tells what happened to me, from my viewpoint. Lizzy’s sister, the one that was forgotten after her death.
You can’t blame my parents, they were caught up in their own grief. Can you blame the rest of the family for only worrying about my parents and ignoring or forgetting me? Not really, because when a child dies all attention goes to the parents. NOT THE SIBLINGS!!!!
As you will see, I will always be the silent mourner. The one who grieves alone.
CHAPTER 1
My name is Lauren May Carson; but everyone calls me Laurie. I’m 16 years old. We just moved to a new little town, and I hate it.
Dad got transferred with his new job. This town is close to the city where Dad's new job is. Mom refused to live there, claiming there were too many gangs and too much violence. So we moved to ‘Cow Hill’.
What kind of name is that?
I heard the front door slam, then Lizzie screamed down the hall, Laurie! Laurie!! Where are you?
I thought about not answering, but didn’t want to listen to her whine about me ignoring her all day. So I sighed and called back, In here!
Lizzie walked in my room. You wanna watch some movies?
she asked, bouncing down on my bed. And eat popcorn? With extra butter, of course.
I rolled my eyes. Lizzie was 18: smart, beautiful
