CHAPTER ONE
9069.jpgDon’t ask. Don’t tell. I acknowledge that is the golden rule of the African gentleman. Believe me Larry, I find it extremely hard to resist the urge of filling you in on my romantic escapades with the Egyptian ladies…
Tony Justice said this before he was rudely interrupted by Larry. Oh spare me that, I’d prefer you talk about the pyramids and ancient times of Egypt.
Come on Larry
said Tony you’ve read enough of that in your history lessons way back in your college days. Young man, I am offering you information that your history books never gave you.
Save that for your wife, if you will ever have one in this life
returned Larry.
There you go again
interjected Tony. When will you stop having a go at me regarding my single status?
The day you walk a lady up the Altar, slip a ring into her finger and pronounce the vows
replied Larry.
Tony shook his head and said I’ve told you, I will get married when the time is right.
And when is that? When your parents give the worms their three wag a day at the cemetery.
That is my darn business!
Tony responded, with a touch of aggression in his voice.
They were interrupted by the shrilling sound of the doorbell. They were seated in Tony’s sitting room gulping down cold beers. Tony had just returned from his two weeks Egypt vacation, and Larry had made a stopover at his apartment to check up on him.
Tony Justice and Larry White have been friends since their secondary school days, right up to university. Tony, 1.75 meters tall, has an athletic structure with broad shoulders. His hair is always kept short and neat, with a pair of glowing eyes that gives his face a perpetual beatific expression. Judging from his facial appearance, it is an uphill task to predict his age with a measure of certainty. He is too old to be called a youth and yet too young to be called a well matured man. Tony graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Psychology, while Larry completed a Degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. Both studied at the University of Brysfield, by far the most renowned University in Benzala.
Tony later gained admission into the Banzalian National Police Academy. After two years, he graduated as a homicide detective and was immediately posted to the Penville police station in Linslay, the city with the highest crime wave in Benzala. During his five years employment, he built a reputation for himself. His name was given an honourable mention in the newspapers, week in and week out. Tony had a talent in solving complex cases. He brought a massive number of cases to light, including the famous assassination of the Deputy Governor of Banshire state. He was assassinated two months prior to the state election, just when election campaigns were heating up and rival parties were on each other’s throats. All accusing fingers were pointed at the ANC party, the Chief Opposition to the ruling party BDM. Tony led that investigation and eventually the wife of the late Deputy Governor was pronounced the guilty party. She had capitalized on the fierce rivalry rocking the forth coming election, intending to take out her husband. Assuming that all accusations would be directed at the ANC party, she had underestimated the ingenuity of Tony Justice and the Benzalian Police Force. This went a long way in establishing Tony as one of the greatest and lucid minds in the Banzalian Police Force. Unfortunately, Tony’s position at the police force did not last too long. He was dismissed from the force five years after graduation, for what was termed as repeated acts of insubordination. Tony was the type who would expect things done his way. He believed his superior colleagues did not embrace the right decisions, and would prefer to bend and twist procedures to suit himself. A conflict of egos overpowered the scenario, until the force got tired of his antics and decided to part with him.
Tony took it positively. After all, he knew the force was not the right place for him. He always had an insatiable craving to be his own boss. He went on and established a private investigation firm. He was never short of cases as one case came after the other. He single-handedly managed his cases decisively, but sometimes used the free hands of his old pal Larry, when available.
Larry on the other hand, went to the UK for his Master’s Degree and returned to the country after three years. He immediately got a job as the Assistant Editor-in-Chief of the Post Newspaper, one of the most renowned newspapers in the country. Larry was a little younger than Tony and the shorter one of the party, with small curious eyes and thin lips. His afro hair glittered from the hair oil he always applied. He had a more intense and serious expression. Unlike Tony, Larry had a greater sense of responsibility and morality. Happily married and a father of a two year old son, he was a great propagator of the philosophy of one man one woman.
Irrespective of the disparity in their approach to life, both men enjoyed a fantastic friendship and maintained mutual respect for each other. Larry never ceased trying to urge Tony to settle down and establish a family of his own.
In response to the doorbell, Tony walked up to the door and gently threw it wide open. Standing in front of him was a gentleman in his early sixties, about 1.72 meters tall. Dressed in a pair of black pants and a dark blue pullover, his hair was short and neat, with a battle of black and grey trying to outnumber each other. He had little puffy sacks under his placid eyes, evidence of little sleep. He
