Intentional Walk - Part Ii (Conclusion) - Allen Goodrich

    CHAPTER 29

I sat in the back seat of the cab with Aaron and Erin Isaacs as we made our way towards St. Margaret’s Hospital and I asked them to please not mention what we had just witnessed back inside Spirit Stadium regarding Dixon’s beaning of Johnny Powers. They all have enough on their minds right now without having to worry about their other son too. Of course, they both agreed with my assessment of the situation, but Aaron thanked me nevertheless for reminding him to contain his natural exuberance and verbosity when it came to the game of baseball. Once we arrived in the Emergency Room waiting area, we quickly spotted Patty, Janet and Jenine sitting together and chatting amongst themselves.

Any word on Todd yet? I asked as we approached them. No, they’re still running tests on him and trying to stabilize his condition, Patty lamented. Have you been able to go back to see him yet? Erin asked. Yes, they have been letting us go back to see him, but no more than three at a time. Mr. and Mrs. White and Miss Thelma are back there now, so you can go see him when they come out, Patty suggested, as her voice filled with emotion and she began to sob. Janet and Jenine were at either side of Patty and they did their best to console her while also desperately trying to control their own emotional state. None of us spoke because we could see that Patty was way too emotional to be able to continue speaking. Erin, Aaron and I took a seat nearby and remained silent until we could see the color returning to Patty’s cheeks.

Thanks everyone, for being so thoughtful! Patty said, as she forced herself to smile. I’m just so worried about Todd! He’s so cute and I hope…, her voiced trailed off, as she once again became overwhelmed with emotion. Don’t y’all worry, honey! Janet began, If that child is half as tough as his big brother, he’ll be fine before you know it! That’s right, Patty! Jenine assured her. That little guy has had to be one tough hombre just to get by from day-to-day! So whatever this is that’s got him sick at the moment had better not plan on getting the best of little Todd White! We all chimed in and agreed with Jenine and that seemed to help Patty regain control of her emotional state once again.

Thanks everyone! I’ll be fine! she assured us with a brave smile. We once again found ourselves sitting there silently and the thought occurred to me that I hadn’t checked in with my boss, C. W. Perry, back at the Pittsburgh Gazette for several days, so I excused myself and found a phone booth in an adjacent hallway and dialed him up at home. Perry residence! the friendly female voice at the other end of the line spoke. Is Mr. Perry home?, I inquired. I believe so, she said. May I ask who is calling? Yes, tell him it’s Ray Gorman., I instructed. One moment please. After a minute or two, his familiar voice resounded into the receiver. Hello, Ray! How the hell are ya! Are you watching this Yankees game?, my editor inquired. No, C.W., I’m not, but I wish I were!, I lamented. They’re getting their asses kicked by the Tigers, 9-1. It’s an ugly game though. They’ve had a bench-clearing brawl and both teams have been warned to cut out the chin-music! C. W. Perry explained. It sounds like a helluva game, C.W., but I’ve got my hands full down here in Spartansburg., I began to explain.

Oh, by the way, Ray, I read your piece this morning before I headed out for my round of golf and you really are to be commended! the Senior Editor gushed. Thanks, sir!, I humbly replied. I have to admit that I had my doubts about your idea to follow this Dixon White character around on his baseball odyssey, but you really are onto something here, buddy! Our circulation is up fifteen percent since your first article was published and I’m willing to bet that this article adds another ten percent or so! Great job, Ray! he concluded. Thanks, C.W., for the kind words, but you need to give yourself at least half the credit because you had enough faith in me to allow me to pursue this assignment, so great job back atcha., I sincerely commended my boss. Thanks, Ray, it’s my pleasure to work with such a pro! he acknowledged. So what can I do for you today?

Well, I just wanted to update you on what’s been going on down here. I began to explain. As you know, Dixon is expecting the call from the Yankees practically any minute now, but meanwhile, a few other things have occurred. "What other things?" Mr. Perry demanded. Well, for one thing, Dixon beaned an opposing player during this afternoon’s game and I think that he hurt him pretty badly. I explained. No sooner had I done so, than I noticed a commotion back down the hallway towards the Emergency Room and watched as Johnny Powers was rushed into the E.R. by the paramedics. Holy shit, Ray! I hope that that doesn’t blow his chances with the Yankees! Mr. Perry said, considering that to be a real possibility. I hope not too, C.W., but that’s not the only thing that’s going on down here today Boss. I explained.

Jesus, Ray, what else did he do, get drunk and molest the local police chief’s daughter? C. W. conjectured, somewhat sarcastically. No, it’s nothing like that. I explained. It’s Dixon’s little brother, Todd. He was rushed from the game in an ambulance and I’m here at the hospital now, waiting to hear about his prognosis. You mean that you didn’t stay at the ballpark and cover the beaning of an opposing player by your golden boy, Dixon White? the chief editor fumed. That’s correct, sir. I left the ballpark and came here because…, but before I could finish my response, my editor cut me off. God damn it, Ray! We have you down there to cover baseball, Ray, not to play wet-nurse to some snotty nosed crippled kid! Perry chastised. Well sir, I had to make a judgment call and I thought that being here was more important, I reasoned.

"Are you sure that you aren’t getting too close to this Dixon character and forgetting what your real job is Ray, to report on his baseball exploits? he demanded of me. There’s more to baseball than balls and strikes, C.W.! The whole reason that Dixon is here in the first place has to do with Todd, so I’ll stand by my decision and let the chips fall where they may, I asserted. Well, you damn well better get our readers filled in on the baseball aspect of today’s events too, Ray, and not just on his brother’s medical condition! Mr. Perry insisted. I will, C.W., you can rest assured on that, I declared. You had better!" he said, before abruptly hanging up.

While I walked back towards the waiting room, I debated in my own mind the wisdom of having just informed my editor of today’s events. I wasn’t at all happy with the disrespectful tone that Mr. Perry had spoken to me in, his flowery accolades notwithstanding. Nor was I happy with him demanding that I approach today’s events primarily from a baseball perspective. I decided then and there that I would write about today’s events however I damn well felt like writing about them, once this crazy day had come to an end. Suddenly, for the first time in my career, I considered leaving the Pittsburgh Gazette, but I knew that this was neither the time nor the place to entertain those thoughts. Before I even sat down, Jenine asked me, Ray, did you see them just bring an Indians player into the E. R.? For a moment I considered lying to her and acting as if I knew nothing about Powers getting beaned, but I knew that her reporter instincts would take over and that she wouldn’t rest until she found out what was going on. I gestured to her to accompany me out of earshot of the group, but she replied impatiently, Ray, can’t you just answer my question?

I’m in no fucking mood, Jenine, I cautioned her, still fuming over my less than enjoyable phone call to my editor. So do you want to know what’s going on or not? I offered. She rose from her seat and accompanied me out into the hallway and I filled her in on what had happened on the playing field after she and the girls had left the stadium. She immediately realized why I didn’t want to discuss this in front of Patty, and apologized to me for her earlier impatience. Oh my God, Ray, I’m so sorry for snapping at you like that! Please forgive me, she pleaded. It’s no problem, Jenine. All of us are on edge and this goddam day isn’t even over yet, I lamented, as I took her hands in mine and squeezed them gently in a gesture of forgiveness. You’re the best! she said, and then gave me a kiss on the cheek. You’re secret is safe with me Ray! she assured me, and then we walked back to our seats.

Henry hurriedly dropped off the two fares that he had after his dispatcher called him to pickup Dixon. He had been listening to the game on his radio in the cab and couldn’t wait to hear from Dixon about what was going on at the ballpark that afternoon. As he pulled up in front of Spirit Stadium, he could see Dixon standing along the curb and chatting with fans and signing the occasional autograph. Before Henry could even throw the cab into park, Dixon had tossed his gear bag into the back seat and hopped in the cab.

Get me the hell outta here and over to St. Margaret’s Hospital as quick as you can, will ya, Henry? he implored his cabbie friend. No problem, mon! Henry complied, by throwing the cab into drive and speeding away from the stadium. Dixon, I was just listening to dat crazy game today, mon! Are you going to dee hospital to visit that Powers guy dat got beaned with your pitch today? Henry wondered. Hell no, Henry! I could give two shits about that asshole! Dixon admitted. It’s Todd; he was rushed from the stadium in an ambulance and taken to St. Margaret’s.

Did he get hit by a foul ball or somet’ing, mon? Henry asked, now completely bewildered. No Henry, it’s nothing like that. Todd’s been having some abdominal pains for some time now and he just passed out right there in his wheelchair during the game. He was supposed to go into the hospital back home for tests and possible surgery after his trip down here to Spartansburg, but I guess whatever disease it is that’s making him sick, had other plans for him! Dixon lamented. Jesus, mon, I sorry to hear dat! Henry offered sincerely. One t’ing’s for sure, mon, he’s in good hands at St. Margaret’s because dat’s one of dee best hospitals in dee state! Well, I’m glad to know that, Henry! Dixon offered, as his voice filled with emotion.

Henry immediately sensed Dixon’s emotional state and decided that ending their conversation and just getting him to the hospital was probably the best way to proceed. Four minutes later he pulled into the hospital driveway which led to the Emergency Room entrance. Dixon handed Henry twenty dollars for a six-fifty fare and thanked him for getting him there so quickly. No problem, mon and t’anks for the tip! Now go see about getting your brother well again Dixon, Henry proposed. I will, Henry! Thanks, man! Dixon said, as he began to grab his gear bag out of the back seat. Don’t worry about dat stuff Dixon. I’ll go drop it off at Miss Thelma’s for you right now! Henry offered. Thanks again, Henry! You’re the best! Dixon replied sincerely.

He braced himself as he walked through the automatic doors that led to the waiting area and E.R. examination rooms. He immediately spotted Patty and the rest of us sitting along the right side of the waiting room. Patty also spotted Dixon immediately and leapt out of her chair, raced across the waiting room and nearly bowled him over with the force of her embrace. She once again began sobbing violently, as she rested her head on Dixon’s shoulder and hugged him tightly around his neck, practically cutting of his air supply. Dixon glanced over towards where Patty had been seated and Janet and Jenine both held up both of their palms in a gesture that indicated to Dixon that they were warning him regarding Patty’s emotional state. He allowed her to release her flood of emotions for a minute or so as he stood there hugging her in silence. Dixon knew how close that she and Todd had become recently and could see that she was worried sick over his current condition. Once her sobbing subsided and she had planted a tear strewn kiss on Dixon’s lips, Dixon smartly walked her back over to the seating area and sat down next to her. Janet and Jenine now moved down and sat next to the couple.

Any word yet on how he’s doing? Dixon inquired of Janet. Momma came out about a half hour ago and told us that they are running a battery of tests on him and trying to get his condition stabilized. They started him on intravenous antibiotics and their initial diagnosis is that he’s fighting some kind of abdominal infection. That’s all we know so far, Janet explained. Is he still unconscious? Dixon wondered. No, but he’s been in and out of consciousness because, since he was in so much pain, they started him on I.V. pain meds too, and they seem to be knocking him for a loop, Janet detailed. Can I go back to see him now? Dixon wondered.

Sure! Wait here and I’ll let the nurse know to send Momma out and you can go back to see him then, since we’re only allowed back there in groups of three, Janet offered. Thanks, Janet! Dixon said, as he sat there holding Patty’s hand. I sat there watching this drama unfolding before me and decided to suggest that Erin and Aaron head back home and told them that I would call them if anything changed. Neither of them would hear of it, so I thanked them for their concern for Todd and excused myself for a moment to speak with Dixon.

Oh, I’m okay, Ray! he replied, But I’ll feel a lot better once we know what’s wrong with Todd and what can be done for it. I’m sure we are all with you in that regard, Dixon, I concurred, careful not to say anything that might set Patty’s raging emotions off once again. Just then, Janet returned with Miss Thelma and the E.R. nurse and Dixon uncharacteristically stood up and greeted Miss Thelma with a huge hug. Miss Thelma looked somewhat surprised by Dixon’s sudden display of emotion towards her, but under the circumstances, she knew that it was truly heartfelt and was moved with compassion for him.

Before any of us had to ask her for an update, she offered the following assessment of the situation; He’s resting comfortably at the moment, but y’all had better keep a good eye on your Momma, Dixon, because she’s an emotional wreck. I will, Miss Thelma! Thanks! Dixon said, as he allowed himself to be led by the E.R. nurse back into the examination room. Upon entering the exam room, Dixon was struck by the amount of activity still going on around his sick brother. Two nurses were currently assisting the emergency room doctor, who, in turn, was now explaining Todd’s case to the internal medicine surgeon, who had arrived about five minutes prior to Dixon. Dixon’s view of Todd had initially been obscured by those working on him, but as they moved around him while performing their various tests, he could now see that Todd was awake, but looked like someone who was under the influence of some heavy duty pain meds. Todd also had several intravenous needles in him, which were providing him with the pain medication and antibiotics that were being administered.

It seemed to Dixon that all of the color had left Todd’s cheeks and the healthy glimmer that was usually in his eyes, was replaced with a dull glaze. His face looked ashen and sunken, which made his eyes appear as if they were bulging out of his head. Dixon had to steel himself and his already raw emotions, if not for himself, then for his parents, whom he could now see were sitting together in the far corner of the smallish examination room. Jesus!" he thought to himself, when his eyes fell upon his Mother. She had her arms draped around Mr. White’s neck and her head was resting on his shoulder. She looked despondent, as if she had been crying for days, instead of hours, as the rims of her eyes were reddish-pink and swollen. She sat there, still sobbing slightly, and staring blankly at the floor. She hadn’t even noticed that Dixon had entered the room. Dixon walked over and immediately put his arms around his Mother and Father, as he leaned down to try and console them.

Oh, Dixon! Mrs. White gushed emotionally. Why is this happening to Todd, my beautiful little boy? Hasn’t he already suffered enough? she asked rhetorically. Dixon didn’t even attempt to respond to her questions, but instead he just hugged them a little tighter and summoned all of his emotional courage to keep himself from caving in emotionally too. After a minute or so of remaining in that position, Dixon finally took a seat next to his Mother and held her hand gently; Miss Thelma’s admonition to ‘keep a good eye’ on her still fresh in his mind. I know that we’re all upset right now, but we’re going to need to be strong for him, once the Doctor’s fix him up! he correctly pointed out and then added, So let’s promise to stay strong for each other until we get through this ordeal, okay? he asked.

You’re right Dixon, of course. This has all just been a little too much excitement for your Mom and I, but…, Mr. White began to explain, but before he had finished, Mrs. White interjected, Thanks, Dixon, for helping me get a grip on my emotions and thank you too, Alan, for putting up with my weakness! she said, as she turned and gave them each a kiss on their cheeks. Dixon’s right, we all need to be strong for Todd! she said, as if Dixon’s words had somehow transformed her from an emotional wreck and back into her usual, emotionally, spiritually and physically centered self. I’ll be right back, she said, as she rose from her seat and walked over to where a small sink was across the room. She turned on the cold water and splashed some on her formerly tear strewn face. What little makeup that she had applied before going to Dixon’s game, had long since washed away in a flood of tears, and the cold water flushed away any other remnants that had been smeared across her face. When she was done freshening up, she returned to her seat between them and appeared to both of them to somehow have transformed herself from the emotional wreck that sat between them just moments before, back into her alter-ego; the protector, caregiver and champion of Todd!

Just then, one of the examining nurses approached them and said, Y’all are welcomed to stay here if you want to, but you would probably be a lot more comfortable out in the waiting room. We’re fine nurse, Mrs. White said politely, But thanks for your concern! Well, there’s some ice water and some saltine crackers over on the table just there if any of you get hungry or thirsty, she pointed out, in another example of the Southern hospitality that Dixon had now become accustomed to. Thanks! Dixon said, as he winked at the young nurse. That was very thoughtful of you! Dixon could see that she had blushed when he winked at her, a blush that wasn’t lost on Mr. and Mrs. White, who suddenly felt assured that Todd was in good hands. Just please keep a good eye on Todd for us, okay? Mrs. White asked of the nurse, in a now very steady tone. I will, ma’am! Your son is in good hands here at St. Margaret’s! the nurse assured her, and then returned to her other duties.

The doctors and nurses poured over Todd for the next several hours, coming in and out of the examination room in a seemingly frantic frenzy of activity. At several points, Dixon and his parents were all alone in the room with Todd and they would all approach him to see if he was awake and to see if he needed anything. But they could see that even though it appeared at times as if he was awake, he wasn’t even aware of their presence due to his condition and the effect of the drugs that he was being administered. Dixon asked his parents if they wanted to accompany him out to the waiting room, but they declined, so he told them that he would go and get them something to eat and have somebody bring it back to them. That would be great, Dixon! Mr. White told him, Cause I’m really getting hungry. Truth be told, I am too! Mrs. White confessed. Thanks, Dixon!

Dixon returned to the waiting room and was surprised and touched by how crowded it had now become. Coach Kincaid had arrived and was accompanied by Billy Hellmann, Jim Kaiser, Pete Gephardt, Don Foote, Lanny Smith and Morris Adell, who were all there in a show of support for Dixon and his family in their time of crisis. Dr. Abramson, the Spirit team Doctor had also made his way to the hospital and was sitting down and chatting with myself and our group. Several reporters, including Candy Smith and several others from today’s post-game press conference, had also made their way to the hospital. Upon seeing Dixon, Patty sprung up from her chair and raced into his arms.

Did you see whose all here? she wondered. Yeah, it’s very touching actually and quite a show of support! Dixon confessed. Except I wish these nosey reporters weren’t here! he added. Did you see that Henry’s here? Patty wondered. No, I hadn’t seen him sitting there, Dixon admitted, since Henry was sitting with his back to Dixon and was also talking quietly with our group. Dixon could also see several of the players from the Indians sitting across the waiting room, along with their Manager, Charlie Rose, and several more reporters. He wondered to himself how Johnny Powers was doing, but he knew that he had more pressing concerns at the moment than to worry about him. Dixon decided to address the group and thank them for their concern.

Can I please have everyone’s attention? he hailed. Some folks in our group hadn’t even noticed Dixon emerge from the examination room, so it took a minute or so for everyone to gather around him to hear what he had to say. He began by thanking his teammates for their show of support. Thanks, guys, for showing up here tonight, you’re the best! Dixon said sincerely. The other guys wanted to come too Dixon, but they all had other commitments that they couldn’t get out of, Coach Kincaid explained. I’ll be sure to thank them too! Dixon assured his manager.

Thank you, Dr. Abramson, my good buddy, Henry, and also to the members of the press for coming out here tonight; it really means a lot to me and my family! Dixon began and then continued, The doctors are still running their tests on Todd and are all trying to figure out what his diagnosis is. They have him stabilized at the moment, but that is really all that’s going on right now. So while I appreciate everyone’s concern, I think that the best thing that you all can do right now, would be to just say a little prayer for Todd and all go home and get a good night’s sleep. Hopefully, we will have more information by tomorrow and I’ll keep you all posted on what’s going on then, Dixon reasoned.

As he was speaking to the group, a young, attractive, twenty-something woman walked up to him, followed by two of her girlfriends. That was a very touching speech that you just gave, she observed. You must be Dixon White. That’s right, Dixon confirmed, still not knowing whom he was speaking with. The young lady then hauled off and abruptly slapped Dixon across his face with all of her might, practically knocking him off his feet and sending a thunderous sound reverberating throughout the crowded waiting room from the force of her blow. A cheer of approval rose up from the Indians contingent sitting across the waiting room, who had watched the entire drama unfold with keen interest. That’s for hurting my Johnny! she shrieked. If you ever throw at him again, I’ll rip your fucking eyes out! his cantankerous girlfriend threatened.

The entire group of people that had gathered to support Dixon and his family were still standing there agape, and momentarily shocked, by the startling attack suffered just now by Dixon, everyone that is except Janet, who immediately sprung into action and tackled the young lady to the floor and proceeded to pin her arms down and spat in her face. Janet, not knowing why the young lady had slapped Dixon in the first place, had come to his defense strictly out of her concern for him. The only eyes that are going to be ripped out around here tonight are y’all’s, missy! Janet countered. Dixon, knowing Janet as he did, approached her and gently tried to talk her off of the young lady’s chest, as the Indians contingent now rushed across the room to aid Johnny’s girlfriend. Luckily, several of the hospital orderlies and nurses had witnessed the entire scene and rushed in between the two groups before the situation escalated into an all-out brawl. They insisted that Janet let the young lady get up to her feet, and that those folks no longer needing to be there, go home for the evening. Janet allowed the young lady to return to her feet and she was walked back over to the side of the waiting room that was occupied by the Indians contingent.

What the hell was that all about, Dixon? Patty demanded of Dixon, as she and the others that had left the game early, all except Jenine, were still unaware of the beaning incident involving Powers. I hit Johnny Powers with a pitch after you guys left the ballpark, Dixon explained. Jesus, Dixon, no wonder she’s upset with y’all! Janet observed. Where did the pitch hit him? Patty inquired. In the face, Dixon admitted. Oh, my God, Dixon! When were you planning on telling us about this? Patty fumed. Dixon didn’t want to upset you with everything else that was going on today with Todd, I explained, as I made my way over to where the inquisition of Dixon was taking place. His heart was in the right place, believe me!

Well…, I understand that, Ray! Patty said to me, and then turned to Dixon and said, But you had better go apologize to that girl for what just happened! I will Patty, I promise, but let’s let things calm down for a few minutes, okay? Dixon pleaded. Okay! Patty replied after a long pause, knowing as she did that Dixon always kept his word. Meanwhile, some of Dixon’s teammates told him that they did need to get going, but that they had wanted to stop by to show Dixon and his folks that they were all behind him and concerned about Todd. Dixon thanked them heartily for their show of support and sent them on their way and jokingly added, I only expect my teammates to get involved in one brawl per day on my account! That gave everyone a good chuckle, including those that remained behind.

Several of the reporters also called it a day and each seemed to make it a point to tell Dixon that they hoped that Todd got well soon. It was always a special moment for Dixon whenever someone that he had professional dealings with would step away from their professional persona, even if just for a moment, and speak with him on his level, person-to-person. He loathed it when people hid behind their façade of professionalism, and he usually attributed this personality trait, which he considered a serious character flaw, to their needing to feel superior to all those around them. The reporters that had just made their farewell to him had earned his respect without even realizing that they had done so.

Once order was restored to the waiting room area, the nurse on duty approached Dixon and suggested that he and his party follow her and move to a conference room that was adjacent to the E. R. waiting room to avoid any further confrontations with the Johnny Powers group of visitors. He agreed that this was probably a good idea with everyone’s nerves on edge and with the two groups being in such close proximity of each other. The nurse then got everyone’s attention and told them all to follow her. Miss Thelma told Dixon that she was going to go back and sit again with his parents.

Oh, shoot! Dixon lamented. I totally forgot that I told them I would go get some food for them. If I go grab some food, can you please take it back to them? Dixon asked Miss Thelma. Not a problem, honey! Miss Thelma replied. I’ll wait with the group in our new waiting area.

Dixon, accompanied by Patty, Janet, Jenine and myself, now followed the signs in the hallway that directed us to the hospital cafeteria, which was open 24-7. I hadn’t realized until our proximity to the cafeteria and its plethora of hunger inducing aromas lessoned, how hungry that I had become. Damn, whatever they’re cooking in there sure smell great, I pointed out. It sure does, Ray! Jenine agreed. But I’m having trouble trying to imagine what it is that’s being cooked that’s smells so good. Whatever it is, it smells like fried food of some kind, she conjectured. No sooner had the words left her mouth, than all of us realized simultaneously what was cooking, Fried chicken! we all said in chorus, as we entered the nearly deserted cafeteria. I feel like I could eat ten pieces! Patty admitted. I do declare that I think that I could too, Patty! Janet chuckled.

We all grabbed a tray and piled them high with different pieces of the fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, grits, coleslaw and whatever else happened to strike our feeding frenzy fancies at the moment. Patty grabbed enough food for her and Dixon, while I made sure to grab enough for myself, Erin and her Father. Janet and Jenine also grabbed extra for Miss Thelma, Henry, Dr. Abramson and whichever of the reporters were still around when we got back from our food gathering task. We paid the friendly cashier, who commented that the chef had really outdone himself today because that batch of fried chicken had the whole hospital staff coming back for seconds. All of this talk about food only served to make us all hungrier and we chuckled aloud as we practically ran back up the hallway to our newly assigned waiting area in order to be able to quickly dig into our meals. Dixon handed Miss Thelma the food that he had bought for his parents and Janet added a few things to the tray, which she had bought for her. Thanks y’all, it sure looks and smells good! Miss Thelma noted and began to make her way out into the hallway. We know, Momma! Janet assured her. I think that we’re all starvin’!

Jenine told Henry and the others that were still waiting around, to help themselves to the food that she had brought back for them. They wasted no time doing exactly that and for the next ten minutes, hardly a word was spoken, except comments concerning how delicious the food was. If I knew the food was this good here, I would have started eating here years ago instead of at the local restaurants! Janet declared. Since it seemed that everyone else in the room had a mouthful of food at the time, all everyone could do is to nod back in agreement to Janet’s words. When Henry had finished eating, he cleaned off his plate and returned it to the tray. He walked over to where Patty and Dixon were sitting and commented, Dat young lady out in dee lobby sure looked hoppin’ mad at you, mon. Have you heard anyt’ing about her boyfriend yet? Henry wondered. No, not yet Henry, Dixon replied.

Once Dixon and Patty had finished eating, he turned to her and said, I’m gonna go do what Henry suggested and go talk to Powers’ girlfriend to see if they have heard anything yet. Well, then I’m coming with you too, Patty insisted, and proceeded to place her and Dixon’s trays on the table in the room where we were all waiting. She returned to Dixon’s side and asked, Ready? Yep! Dixon replied without hesitation. I had heard their entire conversation, so I asked Dixon, Do you mind if we tag along? referring to myself and the other reporter’s that were still hanging around. Based on what just happened out here a few minutes ago Ray, Dixon began, as he rubbed the left side of his still smarting face, if you guys don’t mind, we were hoping to do this alone. No problem, Dixon! Just thought that I would ask, I replied. Thanks, Ray! And you folks too! Dixon concluded, as he and Patty exited the room, arm-in-arm.

He and Patty approached the ER lobby area cautiously, not really knowing what to expect this time. The group of about a dozen or so people was sitting around either reading a paper, a magazine or just talking quietly amongst themselves. Dixon looked around, but couldn’t spot Powers’ girlfriend amongst the group. None of them had even noticed the couple approaching, so Dixon cleared his throat and said, Excuse me, is Johnny’s girlfriend still around? Several of Powers’ teammates quickly rose to their feet as if they were going to lash out at Dixon and said, No she’s not, why; are y’all looking for more trouble, White? one of the players asked, and before Dixon could respond, he added, Because, if so, y’all came to the right place!

Another twenty-something young man, who was sitting across from where the Indians players were sitting, quickly rose to his feet and interjected, I’ll handle this, fellas! His words seemed to have the desired effect and he gestured to them with his hand to just return to a sitting position. He then turned to Dixon and Patty and asked, How can I help y’all? Well, Dixon began, I was wondering if I could speak with the young lady that slapped me before to let her know that we were concerned about Johnny and came to see if you’ve had any word yet on how he’s doing.

Yeah, sure you’re concerned, White! Rex Taylor, the Indians beat reporter from Charlotte accused, You’re probably worried about your own ass and just here to see if your bean ball ended up hurting him permanently and cost him his career! Before Dixon could reply, the young man gestured to Dixon and Patty for them to follow him across the room, where they could speak in relative privacy. They quickly obliged.

Once they sat down across the room from the rest of the group, the young man held his hand out to Dixon and said, Sorry about all of that! I’m Natasha’s brother, Lee Gleason, glad to meet y’all! he said in such a way as to not let the group across the room notice how excited he was at meeting Dixon. As he and Dixon shook hands, Dixon replied, I’m Dixon White and this is my fiancé, Patty! It’s a pleasure to meet you too. Once they all shook hands, Lee told Dixon, Oh, I know who you are all right! I’ve been following your career with the Spirit ever since you signed on with them and I’m a huge fan of yours! he admitted, and then gestured towards the group sitting back across the room and added, I just can’t let those guys over there see how glad I am to meet you on account of how y’all kinda almost knocked off the head of that asshole, Johnny. Dixon shot Patty a sideways glance as if to say, See, this guy can’t stand him either. He and Patty both had to resist the urge to chuckle at his revelation to them.

Honestly, I told Natasha not to get involved with that guy. I just don’t know what it is about him, but he just really rubs me the wrong way! Lee continued. I know what you mean! Dixon admitted. Everyone in the ballpark with a clue could see that he was taunting you all weekend! Lee observed. And I know from experience, that this guy can be a world-class ball buster! Dixon wanted to admit to Lee, then and there, that that was exactly what had happened out on the field, that Powers had made fun of his crippled little brother and that he had just lost control of himself and tried to knock Powers’ head off with that fateful pitch, but instead he just replied, So, have you had any word on his condition yet? Not really Dixon, but I did hear the Doctor tell Natasha that the injury probably looked worse than it really was just due to the nature of jawbone injuries, but that they couldn’t be sure until they had done some more x-rays, Lee explained.

Is he conscious? Patty wondered. Yeah, he’s conscious, but he can’t talk because of the injury, so he has to write everything down for others to read, he explained. Dixon unconsciously thought to himself, Good, now maybe he’ll shut the fuck up! But before that thought finished crossing his mind, Lee added, Honestly, this may be the best thing for Johnny! Now maybe his big mouth won’t get him into so much trouble! Believe me y’all, this guy is his own worst enemy! Lee concluded. Dixon once again had to resist the temptation to begin laughing hysterically over Lee’s admissions, but the three of them did share a secret chuckle, and Patty added, That’s a shame, Lee! Some people just can’t get out of their own way!

Or out of the way of a high inside fastball either! Lee concluded, trumping Patty’s observation, and this time causing the three of them a fit of laughter at Powers’ expense. Just then, a female voice came over the hospital public address speakers which said, Paging Dixon White! Paging Dixon White! Please report to the nearest nurse’s station. Dixon quickly sprung to his feet. The first thing that crossed his mind was that Todd had taken a turn for the worse and wanted to see him. Sheer panic shot through his mind, but Dixon did his best to try and hide his emotions from Patty and Lee. Do you want me to come with you? Patty asked. No, it’s probably just someone calling to see how Todd’s doing, Dixon replied, doing his best to appear calm. I’ll be right back! he promised.

Dixon approached the nurse’s station adjacent to the ER waiting area and tried his best to calm himself. Meanwhile, his concerns for Todd were mounting in his mind keeping him from being able to remain calm. I’m Dixon White, he said to the nurse standing behind the counter at the nurse’s station. I was just paged. Oh, yes! I believe we have a call for you, she replied, and offered Dixon the phone receiver. Is there somewhere that I could take the call in private? he wondered, just in case this call was some bad news, he wanted to make sure that Patty couldn’t see him react emotionally to it. Well…, the nurse began, while mulling over his question, I guess I could patch it through to the office area! she said, as she motioned to an empty office area behind her that was normally occupied by the hospital’s office staff during weekday’s and was visible through a set of large windows. That would be great! Dixon replied appreciatively. Just pick up Line 1, she instructed him. Thanks! he replied, as he entered the empty office area, sat down at a desk and steadied himself, before pressing the blinking button for Line 1.

This is Dixon White! he said, hesitantly. You’re a hard man to get a hold of, Dixon! the voice on the other end of the line stated. We’ve been calling all over town looking for you! I’m sorry, Dixon began, Who is this, please? It’s Joe Belinda, Dixon! the Yankees GM said, identifying himself for Dixon, And I’ve got someone here who wants to speak with you young man! Before Dixon could reply, he could hear the receiver at the other end of the call being transferred into the hands of another person and then a new voice began to speak to him. Well, son, this is the call that you’ve been waiting for! the Yankees Owner gushed enthusiastically. This is Henry Brillstein. Let me be the first to welcome you as a new member of the New York Yankees! Thanks, Mr. Brillstein!" Dixon replied, doing his best to sound enthusiastic upon receiving the call that he had been waiting for since joining the Spirit.

To be honest son, we were looking at some other candidates too, to replace Carlos Guerrero in our pitching rotation, but after we got the scouting report today from Jimmy Stafford, well, that made our decision that much easier, the Yankees Owner explained. That’s good to know sir, but who’s Jimmy Stafford? Dixon asked. Jimmy’s our Chief Scout down in your neck of the woods and he told us that you had one of the ‘livest’ arms that he had ever seen! He also said that the Spirit had yourselves quite a game down there in Spartansburg today and that you beaned that S.O.B. Powers! Is that true, son? Brillstein asked. Pretty much so, yes, Mr. Brillstein! Dixon replied. Well, we’re all proud of you up here in New York, son! We like a pitcher who’s not afraid to offer up a little ‘chin music’ whenever he’s called upon to do so! Brillstein proclaimed. Thanks, sir! Dixon said, not feeling at all proud of himself for what he had done to Powers that afternoon.

I’m gonna put Joe back on the phone now and let him fill you in on all of the details, but once again, congratulations, Dixon! he concluded, and handed the phone back to the Yankees GM before Dixon could even reply. Congratulations, Dixon! Joe Belinda’s familiar voice now entered the receiver. Thanks, Joe, but I’ve wanted to congratulate you too for some time now for being named the Yankees’ GM! Dixon offered. Oh, thanks, Dixon! It looks like we’re both in the same boat son; we’ve both been given the opportunity of a lifetime. Let’s make sure that we both make the best of our opportunity. Okay? Belinda encouraged. Absolutely, Joe! Absolutely! Dixon agreed, while privately thinking to himself that this call could not possibly have come at a worse time.

We had a hell of a time tracking you down, Dixon! First we tried reaching you at the stadium and then we tried your Parent’s motel and then Ray’s hotel. Finally, we called Thelma’s and they gave us the number for St. Margaret’s Hospital, but none of us could figure out what the hell you were doing at the hospital. We wondered if you had got yourself injured during today’s game or if maybe you stopped by to look in on that asshole Powers. So what gives, Dixon? the puzzled GM inquired. It’s my brother, Todd, Joe. He passed out today at the game and now everyone is here waiting to hear what his diagnosis is, Dixon revealed. Well, I’m certainly sorry to hear about your brother, Dixon, Belinda began, and then quickly followed that comment by saying, Because Mr. Brillstein was concerned that you might have gone soft on us and was there to check in on Powers. If we know anything about that guy, Dixon, it’s that whatever he said to you to make you mad enough to throw at him like you did, he probably deserved it. Am I right? Absolutely! Dixon concurred, amazed about how many folks disliked Powers and knew about him and his antics. Dixon wanted to explain what Powers had done to provoke him like that, but before he could do so, Joe Belinda continued by saying, Anyway, please tell your folks that we will keep your brother in our thoughts and if there’s anything that we can do to help, tell them not to hesitate to ask, okay? I will Joe, Dixon assured him. I’m sure that they’ll appreciate that.

Good! So grab yourself a slip of paper Dixon and start writing down the details of what comes next for you in the next couple of days, Joe Belinda instructed. Hold on, Joe, let me find a pencil and some paper, Dixon looked around the desk that he was sitting at, but the desktop was clear and the drawers were locked. He quickly scanned the other desks and saw that they too were also in the same condition. He ended up walking out to the nurse’s station and was given the necessary items. Okay, Joe, fire away! Dixon said upon returning to the phone.

Then, for the next several minutes, Joe Belinda filled Dixon in on the arrangements that the Yankees had already made for him regarding his air transportation to New York and his hotel accommodations, once he arrived there. He was told that a limo would pick him up at the airport, and that once he got settled in to his hotel room then arrived at the ballpark, the Yankees would hold a press conference introducing him to their fans and to the ever-present, New York media. Dixon would then get fitted for a uniform and then Joe would escort him down to the locker room to introduce him to his new teammates. All of this was to happen on Tuesday! This coming Tuesday, which basically gave Dixon one day to get himself ready and to tie up all of his loose ends in Spartansburg! When Joe Belinda sensed the silence at the other end of the phone line, he asked, Are you excited, Dixon? Of course, Joe, I’m totally psyched! Dixon replied, honestly not knowing what he really felt at that moment. But? Joe prompted. But, it’s all just a little overwhelming at the moment Joe, that’s all! Dixon admitted.

Well, I’m sure it is Dixon. You just stay focused on what you have to do and I’m sure that those Doctors down there will fix your little brother up as right as rain! Belinda encouraged the newest Yankee. I’m sure that you’re right, Joe! Dixon replied, trying his best to once again sound eager to be joining the big club. Thanks for the advice! Oh, that reminds me, Mr. Brillstein and I have been following Ray Gorman’s articles about you and are looking forward to meeting him when you both arrive in New York, the GM gushed. The team needs all of the positive press that we can get these days, since our on-field performance has been so shitty lately! I’m sure that Ray’s looking forward to meeting with you guys too! Dixon surmised.

Also, I almost forgot congratulations on your engagement Dixon! Are we going to get to meet the future Mrs. White on Tuesday? he wondered. Dixon considered the GM’s question for a moment and suddenly realized that he had no idea if Patty would be accompanying him or not. Honestly, Joe, at the moment, I’m not sure what’s going on right now because of the situation with Todd. I’ll have to find out and let you know, okay? He asked. That’s fine, Dixon! Call me sometime Tuesday morning at this number, Belinda said, and then gave him his office number at Yankee Stadium. I may have some more details for you by then too, so let’s make sure to touch base then Dixon. Okay, Joe, I’ll call you then and thanks a lot for all that you have done! Dixon replied sincerely. No problem, buddy! See ya Tuesday, he said, as he hung up the phone, leaving Dixon alone in that empty office with his racing thoughts.

Dixon sat silently and bemoaned his fate. Just when Todd and his family needed him the most, in two days he was going to have to hop on a plane and fly away from that place until…, who knew when? His main concern was that by Tuesday, the Doctors would have at least determined Todd’s diagnosis and hopefully had formulated some kind of plan on how they were going to restore him to health. He wasn’t really sure about much else at that point, except that he found it ironic that both he and Henry would be heading to New York on Tuesday to similarly begin new chapters of their lives, but along very different paths. He made a mental note to himself to check with Henry to see what flight he was on. He sat there wondering what his Dad, Mom and Patty were going to do about their flight home. He glanced at the clock on the wall and it was already 8:30 pm. They had already missed their flight back to Pittsburgh and he had no idea what alternate plan, if any, they may have made.

Just then, he heard loud voices emanating from the lobby area and decided to quickly go investigate what all the commotion might be about. Dixon heard the now familiar voice of Natasha and, as he approached them, he could see that it was now Patty’s turn to be the object of her accusations. Natasha had been sitting with Powers back in the examination room and had just returned to the lobby area to smoke a cigarette and try and calm her already tattered nerves. Finding the fiancé of the man who had just hospitalized her boyfriend only added to her sense of annoyance and inflamed all of the hostility within her.

What the hell are you doing over here anyway? she demanded of Patty. Are you just over here to admire your boyfriend’s handiwork? she accused. Patty began to speak and explain that she and Dixon had walked over to check on Johnny’s condition, but before she could finish her statement, and as Lee tried to intervene between his sister and Patty, Natasha suddenly lunged forward at Patty and shoved her to the ground. Just as Dixon approached, Natasha then quickly lurched and straddled Patty’s chest. She was just about to punch Patty in the face, but as she drew her fist back in preparation of applying the blow, Dixon reached out with his right hand and grabbed her by her long black hair, and with a sudden pull, he yanked Natasha off of Patty with all of his might and threw her to the floor. The incident happened so quickly that Dixon didn’t even notice the flash of a camera as he did so. Rex Taylor, the Indians beat reporter from Charlotte, had also brought his photographer, Tom Cullen, along with him just in case something like this did occur, as his reporter’s instincts had led him to believe they would.

As Dixon helped Patty to her feet and Lee attended to his sister, some of the Indians players began to make their way towards Dixon. It was then that he noticed the camera flash going off every few seconds and once again cursed his fate. Several of the ER nurses now made their way over toward the two antagonistic groups and informed them that they were going to call the police if calm wasn’t restored immediately. Fuck that! Charlie Rose replied to the head nurse. Did you see what he just did to this young lady? Yes, I did! The nurse replied. And that young lady was about to do some damage herself. Yeah! Natasha screamed as she got to her feet, I still haven’t heard this asshole apologize for hurting Johnny! she accused Dixon.

"That’s not gonna happen! Dixon assured her. See! Natasha shrieked. He hurt him on purpose! she accused and had to be restrained, once again, by her brother in order to head off further violence. The head nurse then told them that they were all going to have to leave the hospital immediately. Nobody is going to keep me from visiting Johnny! Natasha protested. Would you prefer that I call the police, sir? the nurse inquired of Lee, sensing that he would be the voice of reason within the group of people visiting Powers’. No, that won’t be necessary!" Lee assured her.

And what about them? Natasha asked of the nurse, as she gestured towards Patty and Dixon. One of the orderlys replied, Oh, they’ll be leaving too ma’am, he assured her. That won’t be necessary, Carl! the head nurse informed the huge orderly. They weren’t the ones attacking people every few minutes. Just usher this group outside please! Fuckin’ bitch! Natasha verbally lashed out at the head nurse, who simply replied, Carl. The orderly then grabbed Natasha by her waist and proceeded to carry her on his hip, kicking and screaming all the while, out of the ER waiting area and deposited her, right-side-up in the parking area just outside of the entrance. Have a nice day, m’aam! he said to Natasha, as he departed from her.

He and two other orderly’s also watched as the rest of the Power’s contingent grabbed their belongings and headed out into the parking area of the hospital. Before Lee had departed, Dixon approached him and apologized for the incident and for pulling Natasha’s hair. She’s such a hot-head Dixon, I really worry about her sometimes, Lee confided. When she calms down, please tell her that I apologize and that we hope that Johnny’s injuries aren’t too bad, Dixon requested of him. I will Dixon! Thanks! Lee said, as he shook Dixon’s and Patty’s hands. Just as he was leaving, the head nurse approached them and told Lee, Sir, please inform that young lady that she can come back to visit her boyfriend in the morning, but if there’s any more commotion, the police will be called the next time. I will ma’am and I apologize for her behavior. She’s just very upset, that all, Lee explained, as he made his way towards the exit doors. I understand, sir! the head nurse replied. You have a good evening.

Dixon thanked the head nurse for not making him and Patty leave too and she replied, That woman is as bad as her asshole boyfriend, Johnny Powers! I hate that guy! she revealed. Can you keep a secret? Dixon asked her. Sure! she replied honestly. Me too! Dixon chuckled, as he pulled Patty close to his side and then he asked the nurse, Are you a fan of the Spirit? Big time! But not nearly as big a fan as my ten year old nephew is of you, Mr. White, she confided. Please, call me Dixon, he said, as he shook the hand of the attractive, thirty-something, Negro head nurse. Thanks, Dixon, I will. I’m Emilyu! she said, as she shook his hand, her accent sounding as if she had originally been from one of the many countries that dot the map of Africa. Dixon introduced her to Patty and for the next several minutes they stood there chatting cordially. Emilyu asked Dixon if she could possibly get his autograph for her nephew and he quickly obliged and asked her what her nephew’s name was. Timmy! she replied. Well, Emilyu, Timmy may be getting one of the last autographs that I hand out in Spartansburg, so tell him to hold onto it tightly! he revealed. Before the nurse could respond to his comment, Patty asked, What do you mean about this being one of your last autographs in Spartansburg? You know that phone call that I got just before the incident with Natasha? he asked, Patty, still recovering from Natasha’s assault, had all but forgotten about Dixon being called away to the phone, replied, Yes. Well, it was the Yankees! It looks like I might be heading for New York, if Mom and Dad agree that I should go now! Dixon explained trying his best to sound excited about getting the call he had been waiting for since signing on the dotted line.

Congratulations! Emilyu offered, but as she did so, Patty burst into tears and began crying hysterically on Dixon’s shoulder. Dixon pulled her close and patted her back softly while looking at Emilyu and rolling his eyes as if to say, Women! The wise nurse smiled back in acknowledgement of his dilemma and immediately told Patty, Now don’t you worry, honey-child, we’re gonna take good care of you and that little boy back there in that examination room! Don’t you worry about a thing! she assured Patty. Even Patty wasn’t exactly sure why she was crying. Under normal circumstances, the news about Dixon getting ‘the call’ from the Yankees would have thrilled her to death, but right now, it only seemed to heighten her sense of uncertainty and apprehension. She too silently cursed Dixon’s fate and the unfortunate timing of the call. Really? Patty asked, as she tried to regain control of her tattered emotions. Really? Emilyu and Dixon replied in chorus. Is it okay if I have my friends come back to the lobby area? Dixon inquired of Emilyu. Sure, that’s fine, now that that crazy woman has left the hospital premises! she chuckled in response.

Once everyone had moved back into the lobby area, Dixon asked Patty to go fetch his parents and Miss Thelma and to be sure not to tell them about the call. He wanted to break the news to them himself. What should I tell them if they ask me what’s going on? Patty wondered. Just tell them that I have something important to tell them! Dixon instructed. Patty dutifully obliged and several minutes later the three of them appeared in the lobby area. They all look tired and a bit haggard as they sat down with the rest of the group, especially Mrs. White. Mr. White then asked Dixon, So, what’s up, Son, that’s so important to pull us from your Brothers’ side? How’s he doing, Dad? Dixon asked, before making his announcement. Everyone in the group suddenly became quiet and listened as Alan White gave them an update on Todd’s condition.

    "There’s really been no
