Prologue
The Birth
G et this thing out of me!
screamed the Queen.
If you would stop thrashing around then I will!
the nurse spat back.
The Queen didn’t respond. She just kept breathing in an out with a surly look.
I’m here Kre! How’s my wife? Tess can you hear me?
The king shouted as he burst through the door.
You’re standing next to the bed. Of course I can…Ahh!
the contractions were getting worse and so was the Queen‘s demeanor.
Go and wait outside Carr!
Kre said in aggravation.
Carr left only because Kre pushed him out the door. Kre has been Tess and Carr’s friend for years and was the only one who could get away with addressing the King and Queen in this manner. She was an accomplished nurse with remedies for everything. She was getting along in years but she didn’t let that stop her.
When she turned back towards the Queen she couldn’t believe what she saw. Tess was glowing! Kre approached Tess’s bed slowly. Tess.
No answer. Tess, its Kre.
There was still no answer. Tess didn’t look like she was in pain. Her eyes were open and her mouth was closed. She wasn’t moving.
Then Kre heard the voice, This child is born to save another. One of two, plus her mother. With all three two worlds will be, Saved from all eternity.
Then the voice was gone and so was the glow.
What are you staring at?
the Queen chimed in.
I was…uh…
Kre stammered.
Ahh…This is it!
Tess screamed.
Kre snapped out of her shock and delivered the baby.
Three hours later Tess was holding a beautiful baby girl. Carr was sitting on the bed next to Tess beaming with delight at his daughter. Kre was washing her hands still thinking about the voice and wondering if she should tell her friends or wait for another time.
Kre what’s the matter? You haven’t said anything.
asked Carr.
The nurse turned around and try as she might she couldn’t lie to her friends, There’s something I must tell you but I don’t think that you will believe me.
Try us. There’s a few things we need to tell you as well.
said Tess.
Kre walked over to the bed, looked into her friend’s eyes, sighed, and told them about the voice and what it told her. She expected the King and Queen to be shocked or afraid but they were not. Both of them smiled at Kre and motioned for her to sit down. Tess began to tell Kre about her own powers and asked her to keep her secret but left out some very important discoveries of their own.
Kre sat staring at her friends. Then she saw the sleeping babe and knew that everything has a purpose. What name shall the child have?
she asked the Queen.
The Queen smiled at Kre then looked down at the sleeping babe, Tillie.
Chapter One
The Door
C rash! Bang! It came from outside Tillie’s bedroom door. She was asleep until now. She sat up so fast she nearly fell out of bed. You have got to be kidding me.
She rubbed her eyes and then got up and walked to the door. When she opened it a large black rabbit named Bitz was picking up what apparently was the princesses breakfast. When he stood on his hind legs he was about four feet tall, with blue eyes and black fur.
Sorry princess. I didn’t mean to wake you. I wanted to surprise you for your birthday today with your favorite pastries.
Tillie grinned and bent down to help him pick up the food, Well, it was a nice gesture. Maybe next time you can bring me one or two pastries and not all twelve.
Tillie was the spitting image of her mother. The only difference was that her mother had brown hair. Tillie’s hair is curly and blood red, with fair skin, and dark green eyes.
Your mother and father told me to tell you that ‘they have an exciting day planed for you and something very important to tell you’ and I’m supposed to make sure that your dressed and in the Dining Hall by noon. It’s eight o’clock now.
Tillie chuckled, "Okay Bitz. Don’t worry. I’ll go ahead and change. I’ll be in the gardens until then. You can come and retrieve me there."
Bitz bowed and hopped back to the kitchen to take back the pastries
I wonder what they have planned.
She thought as she got dressed. She picked out her favorite dress. The sleeveless emerald one with the long fuchsia sashes that ties around her waist and is comfortable enough to sleep in.
As she was heading towards the gardens she remembered what her mother’s been constantly telling her lately, Stay close to the castle and if anything strange happens to come and tell me.
Tillie always replied, I’m pretty sure that nothing happens in Geiss.
Tillie knew that her mother was a very special person but neither her father nor her mother ever gave her any details. All she knew was that she loved her mother very much and would do anything for her. Little did she know that she would be helping her mother sooner than she had thought.
It was a beautiful day in Geiss and Tillie decided that she wanted to go for a walk in the gardens because it was the only place where she could relax. Since Tillie was sixteen now she knew that it would be a matter of time before she would have to start learning her duties as the heir to the throne.
Maybe that’s what they want to talk to me about.
She said as she got to the gardens.
Who are you talking to princess?
Bitz asked.
Tillie jumped, I hate it when you do that. I was talking to myself Bitz. What are you doing here?
I wanted to…pick you some flowers.
He lied.
She looked at him for a moment, My parents told you to make sure I stay out of trouble didn’t they.
Bitz’ ears fell, Yes.
Tillie laughed, It’s okay. I don’t mind. You can help me pick some fresh flowers for my room.
Bitz smiled and Tillie handed him the basket that always hung on a post by the entrance to the gardens.
As they got farther into the gardens Tillie spotted her other friend Goldie. Goldie is an eagle and a beautiful one at that. She always kept watch over Tillie and with her sharp eyes she never missed anything. Goldie was perched on one of the grape vines pruning herself.
"And why are you in the gardens?" Tillie asked.
When I saw that you were heading this way I decided that it would be a good time to keep you company on your birthday if you wish.
Tillie looked at Goldie with and accusing stare.
Okay. Your parents…
Wanted you to keep an eye on me.
Tillie finished.
I hope you don’t mind Tillie but they are very persuasive.
Tillie sighed, I don’t mind.
Goldie flew to Tillie’s shoulder and they continued through the gardens. Goldie and Bitz knew that Tillie enjoyed the peace and quiet of the gardens so they didn‘t talk much.
After a while Tillie came across something new in the garden. It was a door made of oak with a silver handle. Around the door were roses entwined to make an archway. This excited the princess very much because nothing strange ever happens in Geiss.
She reached for the handle.
I don’t think that it is wise princess. We do not know what is beyond this door or where it came from.
Goldie persisted.
There might be a great evil that lives on the other side. And you shouldn’t go opening a door that appears out of nowhere! Plus we promised to get you back to the Dining Hall by lunch.
Bitz chimed in.
Nonsense! How could something that’s so beautiful be made by evil? It‘s ten o‘clock Bitz. I still have two hours.
Tillie responded with her hand still on the silver handle.
I can answer that.
said Goldie. Evil isn’t always ugly my dear. It comes in all shapes, sizes, colors, and smells. That’s how it attracts you.
That’s rather extreme don‘t you think. And to prove to you that it’s not done by evil I’m going in.
Before her friends could stop her she was already opening the door with Goldie still on her shoulder and Bitz right behind her. She forgot that she was to tell her mother if anything strange happened.
What they saw on the other side of The Door was the most beautiful site that any of them had ever seen! The rivers were clear as crystal and the grass was as green as the princess’ dress. And the flowers! So many colors and so many kinds! The trees were big enough that you could build a house inside them which is exactly what someone had done!
Tillie that tree is a house!
Goldie exclaimed.
Is anyone inside?
Tillie was curious and wanted to see inside the house.
They were a good distance away from the house so Goldie used her incredible eyesight to look through the window. There’s no one inside princess
.
Good,
she said. I want to take a closer look.
I don’t think that’s a good idea.
Bits said trembling.
Deep down Tillie knew that Bits was probably right but she’d never had an adventure and this was obviously the perfect place to have one. In case you haven‘t noticed the door‘s still there even though I shut it and nobody‘s jumped out to attack us yet. Besides, I’m not going to stay long.
Well,
Goldie said, if you’re not going to change your mind then Bits and I will stand guard outside.
So they walked toward the house. They were amazed to see how big the tree actually was. The base had to be at least fifty feet wide and it was at least a hundred feet tall! Tillie wondered if the whole tree was the house. As she came to the door she noticed that they had cut the door out and then replaced it so that it still looked like the tree. She couldn’t wait any longer.
She checked to see if The Door was locked. It wasn’t. Goldie perched on the window sill and Bitz stood by the door. Tillie took a deep breath then opened The Door.
Chapter Two
A New World
S he couldn’t believe her eyes! To the left was the living room with a couch made out of a humongous purple flower and the rug was purple moss! To the right looked to be the dining room. The table was made out of a mushroom that was definitely the biggest one she’s ever seen! And the chairs were made out of some kind of vines. There was a door behind the table that probably led to the kitchen.
Tillie was so excited that she had to explore more of the house. In the middle of the room was a grand staircase that looked as if it went all the way to the top of the tree! As she got to the stairs on her right she noticed a small table made out of rocks with a small candle placed on top and something lying at the bottom of the stairs on the left.
When she looked closer it was a mouse that was a little smaller than Bitz! Good heavens!
she gasped. Tillie took a step back towards the door but she hit the rock table and the candle toppled off. She froze.
The mouse woke with a start. But once she realized who made the noise she didn’t seem upset. She just yawned, stretched, then stared at Tillie.
When Tillie gets nervous she talks very fast, I’m sorry I didn’t see you there when I came in. Please don’t hurt me. I was curious and didn’t think it would hurt to look around.
The mouse stretched again and said, Don’t be frightened. My name is Zeze. I’m the servant of this house. This is the home of King Mod.
Oh, is he a mouse too?
Tillie asked.
No. He’s human just like you. He went to look for his son, Fin, he’s run off again.
Why did he run away? Is he in trouble?
No. He doesn’t want to hear about what he needs to do when he becomes King. He got tired of listening to his father. I know I do.
Zeze said as she rolled her eyes.
Tillie looked down at her feet, I know how he feels. I’m sixteen today and that means that I begin learning all about being a Queen.
Tillie remembered, "I’m supposed to meet my parents for lunch. Bitz said that they have something very important to tell me."
Who’s Bitz?
Zeze asked.
Oh, they are my friends and servants in the castle. They are outside watching for any evil.
Tillie said the last word very condescendingly.
Well, why don’t you invite them in?
Tillie walked over to the door and opened it slightly.
Come in. I want you to meet Zeze.
She said cheerfully.
Of course Goldie and Bits weren’t too happy to know that someone was home after all. They stepped inside and Goldie was curious, How come I couldn’t see you? I can see from great distances and through just about anything.
Zeze laughed, That’s because I can make myself invisible. The problem is when I’m sleeping I can’t control it and it will come and go. You must have managed to look right when I was invisible.
That’s weird.
said the princess with an equally weird look. Then she looked toward the stairs and back at Zeze, Now that we all know each other would you mind if I continued to look around?
Not at all, you seem to be nice and don’t work for Evil Bog. He’s the King’s brother.
Goldie and Bits looked at each other. They didn’t like the sound of that and really wanted to go but alas Tillie was too interested in the fascinatingly unusual house. She ignored what Zeze had said about Bog, asked no more questions, and made her way toward the stairs.
The stairs did go all the way to the top! They were made out of the same strange vines that the chairs in the dining room were made out of. As she approached the sixth floor she realized that a wall had been built to give the occupants some privacy. It circled all the way around the circumference of the tree. The other rooms didn’t have a wall.
She also noticed that the vines seemed to branch out from the stairs to provide floors, ceilings, and landings for each room. The room on this floor apparently was Fin’s because on the landing was a sign that said Prince Fin’s Room
with an arrow pointing to a door on the left and right of the stairs. She wanted to know more about him so she opened the door on the left. This side was his bedroom and the bed was made out of the same flowers as the couch but they were blue.
As she made her way around she saw his closet, washroom, and study. Next to his study was a small library. She loved to read so she headed straight for the library. The shelves were made out of some kind of fungus. To the left of the shelves was a huge window that over looked the kingdom. Under the window was another small table made out of rocks and she saw a picture sitting on the table. She picked it up.
Fin had to be around her age with blonde shaggy hair, fairly tall, entrancing sapphire like eyes, copper skin, and a smile that took her breath away. She was so infatuated with the picture that she didn’t hear her friends calling her. She didn’t know what made her stare at the picture but she couldn’t look away. She felt safe when she looked into his eyes.
Princess! Princess! The King is…
Zeze quit shouting when the King entered the house. Tillie heard nothing. Not even the sound of someone coming up the stairs. She was focused entirely on the picture.
A hand reached out and touched her shoulder which startled her. She turned around and was shocked to see Fin standing in front of her. She couldn’t breathe and nor could she move. All she could do was stare with her mouth open. Tillie has been introduced to several princes’ but never had she felt this awestruck.
He had on black boots and pants, with a white silk long sleeved shirt, and a vest that matched his eyes. A sword was in
