About this ebook
The TaxTheRichDotName e-mails evolved as an effort to draw attention and popularize the authors view of a quick and easy solution to the problem of income disparity and the distribution of wealth in the United States today. Specifically, that solution is to obviate the need for all of Marxist (both sides, communist and capitalist) idealism and all of aristocratic excess via movement to tax the rich thoroughly, profoundly, repeatedly, and punitively via the vote until the wealthy sit up straight, fold their hands on the table, admit they were wrong, apologize, and put the money bank. Votes, not money, move the US system, and voters, not the wealthy, are the true authority. There is no need to kill the aristocrats and no need to oppress the poor. All that is required is to tax the rich.

Tax the Rich: Thoroughly, profoundly, and Punitively.
Taxtherichlogo.jpgI recently spent 8 days visiting the Berkeley and San Francisco Occupy movements. I had intended to visit Oakland as well, but as they were shut down the night before I arrived and Berkeley heated up quite nicely, I focused on Berkeley and San Francisco. I used the same strategy I used in NY and DC, walking through and visiting several times throughout the day and then spending the rest of my time around the protests on the streets and in the coffee shops, restaurants, and bars. My conclusions remain the same. This is a growing mass movement that simply cannot be stopped. The other 1% the occupiers need to cross the Potomac of this winter and the 98% needs to support and train the other 1%, but the crowds will become larger, more articulate and more unified, flaring up in the spring and breaking out completely in the summer when the students put their books down and have the time and sufficient boredom to put a concerted effort into the movement.
Around the movement you see mini-sit-ins and mini-marches, largely unspoken, but clearly supportive of the 98% and the need to tax the rich. Unions, construction workers, baristas, bartenders, parents, mothers pushing strollers hippies, old feminists, the homeless, old beats even gangy youth seemed to reverberate with a growing sense that something could actually happen. but what?
Raleigh’s, a well-known sports bar on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley, which seemed to be more characterized by pimp behaviors than good sportsmanship was less abuzz than other places but support was visible there as well. Unfortunately, heading there for a drink after returning from Berkeley on night, I discovered it had burned to the ground. As this was the only bar on Telegraph, it was difficult to view the growing support among that crowd.
The message of the movement overall remains confused and dominated by manipulators and trouble makers constantly undermining each other to try and propel their message to the forefront, but this merely keeps those with real voices on the outskirts. There were a couple of good speeches though and wavy fingered beat-ish youth were signaling what they really did and did not want to hear and who they did and did not want to lead. However, it is still a mere ground swell. There even seems to be confidence that a sane and reasoned voice will arise out of all of this. One good march of a thousand or more took shape and looked civil, peaceful, and intelligent. The next day the police removed the tents from the campus.
Berkeley, so largely dominated by students, gives the clearest indication of where the movement is moving. The students are in the background, chatting, working, planning, thinking, and strategizing. There are class projects around the movement as well. For example, I was interviewed by 3 undergrad women working on a documentary for a History class project.
San Francisco had the nicest camp that I have seen to date, but it too was more scary than anything else. Though on a positive note they received notice that the mayor and the health department were coming down to evaluate them for a shut down. They were advised to clean up. And in what seemed like a positive turning point for them, they did clean up, did a good job of it and were allowed to stay at least for a few more days.
The old Beat haunts of City Lights bookstore and Vesuvio’s bar were near the camp, so I stopped by and watched there as well. There is still lots of grousing about the drugs and madness in the center of the movement and often near despair as to whether something can be done by either the occupiers or the 98% to save America, but this is merely what is spoken, what is unspoken vibrates with hope, interest, and the possibility of direct involvement.
It is clear that the unifying message will be to tax the rich, and it is clear that there is support from all quarters for a sane and reasoned movement that can do just that quickly, effectively and punitively. It is also beginning to seem that President Obama’s 5.6% surtax on the rich could be the plank in his platform that could propel this movement and his campaign to a blinding and brilliant success as early as the 2012 elections. It could also force the republican back runners to offer a surtax on the rich of their own to put the front runners back where they belong.
It is necessary to remember that this is NOT about communism, socialism, or anarchy. It is also not about a debate or a discussion of a variety of different tax plans: it is about punishing the rich for the snicker and sneer of the pretense to a trickle down and the insane proposition that the rich will create jobs with their tax breaks rather than more 9 figure annual incomes and million dollar bonuses for themselves and their cronies.
Overtly, consciously, deliberately or not they are aristocrats and monarchists: they are not interested in the democratic vote: they are only interested in cooking the vote to their own advantage. And when that is done, they will merely lower minimum wage, raise ATM fees, get rid of public education or at least reduce the quality of it, so that access to jobs and wealth is held utterly by the upper 1%.

They can’t say it! Tax the Rich!
Let us presume upon the good-heartedness of the psychiatric and medical communities for a moment as we foray into their territory with our pretenses to psychological understanding and take a look at nut cases
and whack jobs.
We have them on both sides of the aisle and on right wing and left wing television and radio. Certainly, we want to allow the newscasters to use colloquialisms that might ring true with their audiences, and we want to effect positive change via that effort. However, we need to be sure that we understand those terms.
A nut case
is someone who obsessively harasses himself; a whack job
is someone who constantly harasses others. The first is easily curable; the second is far harder to cure. A third, the psycho
rarely experiences a cure with or without drugs. So we are looking at three deviations from the normal, the ordinary mind of daily reality: a) nut case, b) whack job, and c) psycho. Within the medical community, these are: a) neurotics, b) those with personality disorders, and c) paraphrenics.
Of course, we are all still presuming upon the good nature of the psychiatric and medical communities, but we need to keep talking. Using their terminology, we might call a nut case,
a neurotic, someone who bothers him/herself, a
whack job, a sufferer of a personality disorder, someone who bothers everyone else, and a
psycho," someone who cannot track either physical or psychological reality, someone who is always bothered and always bothering.
Getting back to the distinction between nut case
and whack job,
the left and right wing bugaboos: it is important to recognize that whack Jobs,
those with personality disorders, are constantly bothering others, particularly the nut cases.
The whack jobs
are those with personality disorders: the bullies, mobs, targeters, and gangs. The nut cases
are their most common targets, though the normal, the wholesome, the creative, and the innovators are also their targets. The nut cases
are consumed by shame, fear, and guilt. The whack jobs
have no shame, fear, or guilt, and they tend to think that because of this, they are saints. The normals have no idea why the nut cases
are bothering themselves so, or why the whack jobs
are bothering others. They are baffled by the entire thing, but they feel something needs to be done. The nut cases
are innocent but beleaguered; the whack jobs
are guilty but shameless. The former are vics; the latter are perps. The police know this. So does the medical community.
Bill O’Reilly, Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Beck, and Cramer are good examples of whack jobs
; their targets are good examples of both the nut cases,
and the normal.
The whack jobs,
those with personality disorders, need to be stopped; the nut cases,
those with neuroses need to be encouraged, and the psychos
need help. The normals,
those who prefer to deal with ordinary daily reality and wish to make a life from that, need to recognize the unfortunate reality that nut cases,
whack jobs,
and psychos
far outnumber the normal these days.
In any case, this is just a small contribution to the understanding that is necessary to break the gridlock in congress and get the world and the U.S. back on track with ordinary, everyday reality and the rights and responsibilities that entails. The nut jobs
need to stop harassing themselves; the whack jobs
need to stop harassing others; and the ordinary need to recognize how outnumbered they are and make their efforts from there. Surely, the normals
will prevail.
Sincerely,
Philip A. Bralich, Ph.D. Reminder to Self: Ruling the World is not all Jewels and Thrones.

Taxtherichlogo.jpgHere is a sample of the emails I am sending around. I’ll forward a couple of more as well.
Tax the Rich: Thoroughly, profoundly, and Punitively.
They can’t say it! Tax the Rich!
As founder of TaxtheRichDotName, I took a week of my time and spent it at OWS and ODC. I started with 3 full days in D.C. and except for one morning site seeing, I spent the time in McPhearson Park and the coffee shops, restaurants, and bars around it. I also watched it develop over these three days. I then did the same thing at Succotti Park in NY.
The reports on television are largely accurate: the center of the movement is crowded with homeless looking for a haven, some drug users or ex-drug users, some who look and act like ex-cons. Much of the interior environment is reminiscent of the Peace Movement of the 70’s: make shift kitchen, medical tent and info tent surrounded by tents and park benches. It is far messier than it needs to be and far enough lacking in visible attention to making a good, marketable presentation as to make one suspect they could undermine themselves.
The political message is quite confused. There is virtually no attempt to generate speeches and discussion though occasionally they turn up. The messages inside all express a frustration with the distribution of wealth in the country, but their solutions are non-sensical at best and completely lacking in a unifying theme: some advocate communism, some socialism, and some barter economy others wish merely to destroy capitalism and offer nothing as a possible alternative. All this in spite of the obvious underlying theme of redistribution of wealth. Few seem to think in terms of fixing the system via the protest while using the current system that is in place, the vote.
They tend to see themselves as the top of a pyramid that is somehow, magically controlling the voting
