The Keepers Children; the Realm - M. W. Kohler

    Prologue

    33981.jpg

Seventeen years had passed since Cory had destroyed the evil Narle and became The Keeper of the Plain, freeing the Plain to prosper again. The races of the Plain and the Valley found peace and happiness with the guidance of the Keeper. Truth of heart and word was all that was needed. The populations of both Valley and Plain grew with respect of the world that was theirs. Sandy, Mistress of the Plain and wife of the Keeper of the Plain, had delivered four children, two sets of twins, to the Keeper and to the Plain. She was proud of her children, her husband and the Plain. Her brother, Tom, and Cory’s sister, DeeDee, brought three children to the Valley and she was proud of them all as well. But it is the four of Cory and Sandy and the eldest of Tom and DeeDee that this narrative is mainly concerned. For it is the four of the Keeper that would carry the Realm of magic into the future and the eldest of Tom and DeeDee, that would help keep it center stream!

    Chapter One

    33984.jpg

"Y ou know what papa said Morgan. We can’t go to the outer world without him being with us," Megan called to him with more than a tad bit of sarcasm. A small grin hidden from her brother. Morgan shot her a quick glare and turned back to the scene before him. He looked from the highest point of the northern mountains, across the forested land, to the new town that had sprung up over the last year. It was just barely a dot on the horizon to the normal eye, but Morgan could make his eyes act as telescopes which he called his Far Sight and the town was much clearer to him. That was one thing his older brother couldn’t do. Of course, there were many more things his older brother could do that he could not, but this, he could. He ached to go explore that town, more for something to do than anything else. He was bored of the life of the Plain and he wanted more.

She speaks the truth, his friend Gremble muttered kneeling beside him.

I know Grem, but I would sure like to go there and see it close up, Morgan told the ogre. He glanced back to his twin sister, who was on the flat some distance down and away from him and Gremble. He saw that she was kneeling, in deep conversation with the two Melerets that were constantly with her, Corkraen and Sankroon. He smirked, for he knew that meant she was plotting something, probably against him. Gremble looked as well and he too knew the signs of conspiracy.

I wonder what she plots this time? the ogre grumbled with concern in his voice and Morgan chuckled.

There is no way to know Grem, but whatever it is, it won’t be dull! Morgan said chuckling and the ogre joined in with a nod.

Come on Morgan, Meagan called, standing as the two Melerets scampered away. Exasperation was clear in her voice. How long are you going to drool over that silly little town? Morgan glanced at Gremble and winked. They turned and they worked their way back to the flat, where Megan waited, a grin trying to find her mouth.

What devilment has your twisted little mind conjured this time Megan? Morgan asked as they neared the girl. She put on a wide eyed innocent face and batted her lashes as a finger pointed to herself.

What could you possibly mean dear brother? she asked, fooling no one, especially her brother who laughed at the performance she made. Gremble was a tad nervous, mostly because the last one of her practical jokes might have been meant for him and his butt was still a little sore. Megan had sworn to him that he had not been the target. So Gremble had learned the meaning of the saying, being in the wrong place, at the wrong time and he still wasn’t completely convinced that he hadn’t been the target. The rule of thumb was, if you saw Megan and her Melerets in secret conference, everybody goes to red alert. If a few of her faxlie friends were involved as well, seek immediate shelter and do not come out until the all clear is sounded! Of course, the faxlies were not committed to any one source of trickery. Morgan had used them for a few tricks on Megan as well and they were just as willing to join in on those. In fact, there was one time that Morgan had plotted an amazing gag on Megan and she had plotted one on him and the very same faxlies were used for both gags, and they pulled them off!

The sun nears high, Gremble said to them both after a glance to the sky. They both nodded and turned to start down the mountain, veering slightly to go by Gremble’s parents cabin. They arrived at the cabin in a surprising short time because Megan snuck in a jump spell to cover the last half mile. She really should have told them she was going to do it because jump spells had the tendency to sicken the ogre and nobody wanted to be near a nine and a half foot tall, four hundred and fifty pound ogre when they got sick to their stomach. The two humans waited a few minutes to make sure Gremble wasn’t going to anything that might be messy before Morgan said anything.

They must be to harvest or somewhere, cause they ain’t here buddy. Morgan said after they looked outside and inside the cabin. Gremble’s huge hand plowed into his forehead.

You were supposed to be at harvest huh? Megan asked him, beginning to smile just a little. Gremble nodded with his hand covering his face. Oh is Graddle going to make your day, she said snickering. Gremble dropped his hand and glared at Megan intently at the mention of his half brother. Megan held up her hands and backed up. Sorry, she told him, hoping he wasn’t as angry as he looked.

Way to go sis, always a good idea to anger the ogre! Morgan told her as he got in front of his friend. Easy big guy, she was only teasing. He looked up into the eyes of the ogre, his hands on the ogres chest and waited. There are times when it is not wise to rush an ogre. Come on Gremble, ease up buddy, Morgan told him, a little more push in his voice. Gremble glanced at him and then back to Megan.

I’m sorry Gremble, I really am, Megan told him. Gremble snorted and turned from his human friends and went and sat down on one of the sitting stones to think.

What’s it going to be Grem, go to the harvest or with us? It’s your call, Morgan told him. Morgan was the only one Gremble would allow to use the shortened form of his name. The Meleret’s returned and nodded to Megan. Morgan looked to them and then to his sister, who’s smile was quite wide.

What are you up to Megan? he asked in a tired voice. She looked at him with irritation.

I always have to be up to something with you, don’t I? she snapped at him, her hands going to her hips. He lifted one brow and shrugged.

Let’s face it Megan, you have history, he told her flatly. She clamped her lips and glared at them both, when Gremble nodded his agreement.

Just for your information, tomorrow is grandpa and grandma Zentler’s anniversary, which I did not forget and you obviously did and I have planned a few extra things to make the celebration even better! Morgan stared at her for a moment. Then slowly put his hand to his forehead.

That’s tomorrow? he asked her, his eyes closed. She nodded at him grinning. Morgan opened his eyes and looked to Gremble. Oh crap, he said to the ogre, who nodded his agreement.

I think, Gremble told Morgan, rising from the sitting stone. It would be better if I go join the harvest. He turned and headed for the fields over the ridge from the cabin. Morgan watched his friend leave and then turned back to his sister, who was still grinning.

Oh crap! he said again, only louder and started for the castle. Megan, chuckled at his discomfort as she followed him.

Marie, do you have any idea where the twins are? DeeDee called out, as she folded the clothes she had just brought in from the clothes line.

Do you really need to ask? the daughter who was the spitting image of her mother, except that her hair was a light brown, asked in return, laughing.

Damn, DeeDee said under her breath, Call them please and tell them to come home! her voice was pure exasperation. She looked at her husband, who smiled back. Don’t you start, that girl drags him everywhere. Tom started to open his mouth but his mother-in-law cut him off.

DeeDee, calm down, there’s plenty of time, Maria said as she came through the partition that separated the two cottages.

Besides, Michael added, just behind Maria. How would you call them if he wasn’t with her? Tom came to her just as she formed a glare for her father.

Honey, calm down. Your mother’s right there’s plenty of time and it’s a good thing for Willy to be with her, he told her soothingly. She looked into his calm eyes and realized he was right. She took a deep breath.

They’re on the way, Marie stated as she came from the room she shared with her younger sister. She carried hers and Candy’s small bags.

Thank you, DeeDee said, turning and giving her oldest daughter a quick hug. She turned back to what she was doing. God, why did that girl have to hit puberty? she asked herself quietly. Maria heard her and started to laugh. DeeDee started to glare at her mother, but when she looked into her eyes, she started to laugh as well. I guess that was the wrong thing to say, she told Maria, who nodded slowly and winked. Marie started to help her mother and suddenly looked up.

Mike says a pixie just arrived, Marie announced. "The Olistown group is in the Canyon and will be leaving there soon and wants to know if we have seen the M twins?" DeeDee, Tom, Maria, and Michael looked at her.

Is there anybody you can’t talk to? her mother asked her. Marie smiled.

You, she said and went to the kitchen to help Maria, her grandmother. DeeDee just stared at her as she walked away.

    I wonder where Cory is? DeeDee asked the air and sent that very question to her older brother, but did not get an answer. Before she could even ask, Marie told her;

Uncle Cory went to the wingless nests early this morning and nobody has heard from him since. Aunt Sandy sent a faxlie to check on him, her daughter called from the kitchen area.

He’s been spending a lot of time with them lately, DeeDee mentioned to everyone. Who told you that, Grembo? DeeDee asked her daughter laughing. Marie laughed as well.

No, Calteen. DeeDee stopped laughing and just stared at her daughter and Marie laughed louder adding; Rislear was the one aunt Sandy sent. DeeDee continued to stare at her daughter.

Your brother has got a lot on his mind. I’m sure that when he’s ready he’ll tell us what’s going on. Maria told her from the kitchen, as she peeked over the counter at her daughters expression concerning her granddaughters communication skills.

You’re probably right mama, but sometimes he so secretive about things, DeeDee mentioned and looked out the window. Where are those two?

Dear, it does take some time to get here from the ranch. Don’t worry, they’re coming, Tom told her as he went by her to their room. Did you pack that tan shirt Dee? Marie, can you ask my shirt if it was packed? Tom was laughing as he entered the bedroom.

Yes dear, I packed your shirt and don’t you dare talk to his shirt Marie, she said quietly and glanced out the window again, then followed her husband into their room, But I did forget my dress, she told him. She heard her mother’s and her daughter’s laughter from the kitchen.

Marie, could you help me on our side a moment? Maria asked her granddaughter as they finished the last of the dishes.

Sure grandma, the girl told her. Grandpa, which horses do you plan on taking to the Plain?

The roan and the brown spot, Michael answered.

I’ll help when you’re ready to pack them, she told him as she disappeared into the other part of the cottage. Grandpa Michael waved as he headed out of the door to get the horses ready and, to warn Willy and Candy when they arrived.

Did you say they were looking for the twins? Maria asked as she opened the pack and started to point to things on the bed for the girl to bring her. There was no question which twins she was referring to.

Yes, but I told Mike to look for them up on the mountain, Morgan is aching to go see the new town that’s out there now and after the Black Forest incident, uncle Cory won’t let him out of the Plain without escort. Marie was grinning with the last part. Maria chuckled.

I never did figure out why he was alone on that adventure, I thought those two went everywhere but the outhouse together. Maria chuckled louder.

Grandma, I wouldn’t put too much money on that either. You heard about last week didn’t you? the girl asked with a sneaky grin. Maria looked at her and shook her head. Well, it seems aunt Sandy caught them, our twins and a whole bunch of pixies, fairies and faxlies swimming at the Dam pond and not one of them had a stitch of cloths on! Marie started to laugh. Maria looked at her, chuckled and shook her head slowly.

Willy and Candy too? she asked Marie, who nodded, her eyes wide.

Naked as the day they were born. Marie said still laughing.

I hope Sandy didn’t make too big a deal about it. I used to catch your mother and uncle at Pinnacle pond the same way. Up until your aunt and father came along anyway and I’m not too sure about after that, Maria told the girl, in a whisper. Don’t tell your mother I told you about that, okay? Maria winked at her granddaughter who nodded that she would keep the secret.

What I heard from Megan later was that aunt Sandy just said something about chores or something and got them out of the water and into cloths, Marie told her. I don’t even think she told mama about it, still giggling. The feint call from Michael reach them.

Go ahead dear, I can handle the rest alright, Maria told her and she got a kiss on the cheek before the girl was out the door and running for the corral. Maria watched her for a second, thinking that both of her children had made some very beautiful and very special children of their own. She sighed and went back to the packs. The twins arrived a few minutes later and grandpa Michael told them they had better get their butts in the cottage. Their mother was getting very antsy to go and they were the last to get ready. Marie told Candy that she had already packed her stuff and had laid out the outfit that she had said that she wanted to wear. Candy gave her older sister a hug and ran for the cottage. Willy had simply handed the reins to his grandfather and took off for the cottage. They could hear the high notes of DeeDee as she told them how late the two were going to make them all and the soothing sounds of grandma Maria trying to keep things calm. Grandpa Michael and Marie were chuckling as they brought the two pack horses to the cottage.

Edgar was waiting exactly where and when he was supposed to be, but that was only because of Suzie. She kept him organized beyond what any would have expected possible.

I don’t care about their age difference, she ‘s the best thing that ever happened to him, Betty told Cretia, as they rode in the buckboard towards the couple. Cretia nodded her agreement, but she still held some reservations on the age point. Edgar was well into his forty’s and Suzie was just into her twenties. Though, she did have to admit that now that Edgar had grown his hair back, they made a cute couple. Neither all that tall and both just a tad to the heavy side. She also had to admit that they were happy together. They were laughing about something when the buckboard pulled up, just a few feet from the steps that led to their home in the trees. Suzie climbed into the buckboard as Edgar made their contribution to the pile of bags in the back and then climbed in as well. Cretia was looking around when he got into the buckboard and then she had to finally ask.

Alright, where are they? She was grinning a little when she asked. Four small heads poked up from Suzie’s coat collar, for Pratt and Statt had created a son and daughter. You have them inside your coat? Cretia voice held a twinge of yuuuck to it, suddenly realizing what they had been laughing about. Suzie just nodded.

Yes, it’s just cold enough to make them uncomfortable since they just had a bath, so I thought until we reach the Canyon, they would be better off in here. Suzie told her with her little voice, which Edgar had informed them was not always a little voice! Cretia looked at Suzie and thought, If the town council had not made a mistake and contacted two different school teachers, this would not be. When both young women had arrived at the same time, the council had settled for the one who had more experience, leaving poor Suzie trapped. Then in walked Edgar and it was love at first sight. Who would have guessed. That was two years ago and the couple seemed as happy as two people could be. With Harry and J.R. on horseback leading the way, J.R. near as big as his father now, almost seventeen and Ralph driving the buckboard, they reached the Canyon several hours later.

Bill and Kathy came out to meet them and the entire Canyon wolf pack joined some minutes later. The imps were not happy about that, but the wolves were careful not to cause them more than a few minor heart attacks with their teasing. Bill and Kathy had inherited the Canyon ten years earlier when Hans had reached a point where age was telling him, this is as far as we go, and the morning of his passing, Greta wrote a letter, bequeathing the canyon to the good friends that the Zentler’s had become. She then lay down next to her husband of so many years they could not remember and she gave up her life here and went with her husband. Bill and Kathy had hesitated at first and then decided that it was important to cover both ends of the Plain and Valley. They turned over the operation of the ranch to their foreman, Fredric and his family, who now had grandchildren of their own. They tore down the hut and built a larger house that had more room, for when their children and grandchildren visited. Then came the terrible news from Fredrick that his son-in-law had been killed in a freak wagon accident. So now, Fredric and his wife cared for their daughter and grandchildren. The oldest of which, Paul, their granddaughter Candy thought the world rotated around and they moved to the Canyon. Bill checked on Fredric and the ranch a few times each year and never doubted the value of his foreman or the grandson, because young Paul was doing more and more of the work, very well. The ranch prospered and Bill and Kathy found each other again and what they found was even better than what they had never lost!

Bill shook Harry’s hand and then J.R.’s. While doing this he looked back and forth between them and chuckled at their similarity of size and appearance. Kathy went to the buckboard and helped Cretia and Suzie from the vehicle. Of course once Suzie was out of the buckboard, the imps sprang free and zipped around, at least until the wolves got there. Kathy gave Ralph a hug and got out of the way as Harry and J. R. picked up Betty and carried her into the house. They then went back out and rescued Edgar who was doing the best he could to calm imps and repel wolves and was not succeeding very well at either.

I still find it hard to believe the difference in temperature once we get to the Canyon, Ralph told Kathy as he checked on his wife and then went to the stove to warm his hands.

It’s because we’re so close to the Plain Ralph, Kathy told him as she did every time they came to the Canyon. Ralph was now in his eighties and was surprisingly agile for his age. Though he did have a slight crouch to his stance and complained more of the cold then he used to. He would also be panting pretty hard at the top of the stairs and he didn’t remember things as well as he used to. Where Betty, now just into her seventies, was still active, but could no longer climb the stairs by herself. Kathy got Betty a cup of hot tea and then helped Bill get their limited bags to the buckboard. An hour later, Betty was loaded back into the buckboard and with Ralph driving and everyone else walking, they started towards the Plain. They were all excited about the gathering. It had been years since they had all been together at one time, not just the occasional meeting here and there and they were all looking forward the chance now.

Mike, his mother called coming from her room upstairs. Did we find out anything on the wandering duo? Mike grinned.

They’re not at the Valley, he called back as he headed for the great room. Marie suggested looking on the mountain.

That’s what I figured but I thought we ought to try the Valley first, Sandy said coming down the stairs. Is there a fairy or something available? she asked the empty hall.

Already asked Quailar to check on his way back from the hunt, Mike called from behind the big desk. Sandy glanced into the great room and could only see the top of her sons head. What can he be reading now? she wondered. She shook her head thinking that between her son, daughter and her niece, they could communicate with just about anything in Plain or Valley. She headed for the kitchen to check with the Melerets, even though she knew she didn’t need to. They knew what to do, but Sandy was nervous about the coming guests and a husband that seemed to spending a lot of time with the wingless, but not telling her what was going on. She walked into the kitchen just as Melkraen launched an apple past her. She shied from the flying fruit and then heard it hit a hand behind her. She didn’t even need to turn around.

Are you ready Katie? she asked her oldest daughter. A loud crunch of apple bite preceded her daughters reply.

Yeth, Katie answered around the wad of apple in her mouth. Maria turned around and looked at the girl. She was again amazed at the beauty that was Katie. Both of the older twins had inherited her blond hair, but they both had the penetrating gray eyes of their father. The second set of twins got their fathers black hair and her blue eyes. Speaking of which, she sucked in air to call Mike, to find out if the two had been found yet, when Mike called from the room across the entry hall.

Quailar says they’re almost here, Mike yelled and Katie laughed at her mother’s expression. Papas on the way too and Hartile walks with him, Mike added. Sandy had forgotten that Mike could talk to his father too.

Is there anybody that boy can’t talk to? Sandy muttered as she headed for the door to wait for her two youngest. Katie following her as far as the hall.

You mama, the girl said as she started up the stairs, giggling. Sandy turned and shot a glare at her oldest daughter, then had to laugh.

At least you can talk to me, so I’m not completely out of things, she called to the girl. Katie stopped at the top of the stairs and grinned down to her mother and nodded as she told of her love, without using her voice. Sandy turned back to the door and could just make out the shapes of her two youngest as they cleared the trees. Why would the dragon leader be with him? she wondered out loud.

    34635.jpg

They all gather today! Balteen spat at the small group pixies and fairies. I think that we should help them Not enjoy the day! The gathered laughed.

What do you plan Balteen? a pixie named Flateen asked, a grin on his face. The hate distorted face of Balteen stared at the few standing or sitting around him. They were the biggest and meanest he could find. They spent most of their time hassling faxlies whom Balteen hated and the smaller creatures mostly for the fun of it, but the lessons of his mothers hatred and arrogance still burned in Balteen’s mind. His true goal was the Keeper of the Plain! But how were a dozen or so pixies and fairies to challenge the magic of the Keeper? That thought had plagued him since his mother’s death from the ever heavier amulet the Keeper had placed on her. He needed more magical power, that he knew, but how was he to get it? The group around him were big and mean for fairy folk, but definitely on the lower end of the smart scale! Balteen glanced at the early morning sun and then to those before him.

We have to think! To do something special for them. I want each of you to come up with an idea and tell me before the sun reaches high. Balteen waved his hand in dismissal at the confused group. Flateen watched Balteen turn and start for his tree and thinking, He has no plan. He doesn’t know what to do! Good! Flateen flew off to inform the one who always wanted to know what the rebel Balteen was up to, Queen Alasteen. For Balteen was her younger, half brother. Balteen went to the tree where he and his mother had spent the last years of her life. As he looked around the interior, the fires of hate burned in him for the sentence of death his mother had received from the Keeper. There had to be a way to get even. There had to be a way to make the Keeper pay for his crime against his mother. Little did he know that there was going to be a chance, but it would be quite some time before he could use it.

    34637.jpg

Mat-bear, Baslear called from the opening of their tree. Matlear came zooming at her, there was not a happy expression on his face. Uh Oh, Baslear told herself. Matlear flew up to and now hovered in front of her, his glare quite prominent. I’m sorry Mat-bear, I mean Matlear, I forgot, I’m sorry. She got that pitiful look on her face and Matlear visibly softened for a moment, but only a moment.

Baslear, we talked about this, he started. I cannot keep the respect of the guard, as their leader, if you are calling me Mat-bear at the top of your lungs, he all but huffed at her. She fought the smile from her face and nodded solemnly.

I know, I’m truly sorry, she managed to keep her voice soft. I just didn’t want us to be late for the gathering, she said, bringing her voice to the appropriate level of excitement. His eyes opened wide.

That’s today? he cried out and then quickly clamped his hand over his mouth. The neighbors tried not to let him see their grins. Baslear nodded, allowing her eyes to open slightly and still not grin. Oh geez, why didn’t you tell me yesterday? he tried to accuse her. She frowned and looked at him.

I did Matlear! she told him. Now, would you mind getting cleaned up so we’re not the last one’s to arrive, Please! She was not smiling now and the neighbors did not have to look to know it.

Yeah, yeah, of course. he stammered and started to fly off for the stream, then stopped and turned to her. Are you sure that it’s today? he asked her in a meek voice. She just glared, her hands on her hips, until he went to the stream and washed up. The neighbors just laughed, as did the arriving Sanlear and Tanlear and their first ever for fairies, twin sons, Derlear and Corlear. Named after the brother and sister who had saved the Valley from Narle. Baslear looked at them and blew out an breath that caused her cheeks to puff.

The General is going to be late, she stated and then despite herself, grinned. Sanlear nodded her understanding and Tanlear smiled.

His troops have kept a pretty tight grip on Balteen and his mob and with watches at the tunnels and keeping the Valley safe. You can’t fault him that, Tanlear reminded all. Sanlear nodded and looked at Baslear. Baslear sighed.

I know that the Guard, as he calls them, have been a benefit to the Valley and the Plain. Baslear said. I truly do and I am proud of him for it, but geez, he gets so caught up in it sometimes. Sanlear laughed and gave her a hug.

We will fly slow, she told her best friend. And we will wait at the portal, alright? She looked into Baslear’s eyes. He’s worth it.

Sometimes, Baslear agreed and caught sight of Matlear streaking toward them. Here comes speedy now in fact. We will be there soon, I promise, she told Sanlear, who nodded and the four flew off slowly, saying their good mornings to all they saw. Baslear glanced at Matlear coming towards her and realized that her mate was traveling way to fast. She just did get out of the way as he sped into the tree. He had miscalculated his stopping distance and slammed into the opposite wall. Baslear cringed at the impact, thankful that their children were already in the Plain and had not seen their father performing another of his fabulous feats. She went to make sure he hadn’t killed himself. Fifteen minutes later, they left the tree and joined the others at the portal. They passed through as a group, followed closely by the Valley wolf pack. Of course Matlear was rubbing his head and nobody needed to asked why.

Why do I have so much trouble remembering the little unicorns name? Poress muttered to himself.

His name is Porline, Gallan reminded him, as they walked towards the two young unicorns. Why cannot you remember his name when he is named for you? she asked him chuckling. Poress wanted to glare at her, but failed and sighed instead.

I don’t know, maybe it’s the fact that he cannot stand still, Poress stated as they approached the two and could see Porline prancing around their bigger, more serene foul, Waress. They should have named him Twitchy! Gallan laughed and then controlled herself.

He does seem a bit, ah, antsy, doesn’t he? she asked softly, trying to be tactful. Poress just looked at her wide eyed.

He is one large nerve! Poress stated. He couldn’t hold still if he was tied down, Poress stated. Gallan laughed, as did Sortine as she came near them.

My brother, you have stated the truth, she told him as she and Ransoon stopped next to them and watched the antics of the smaller unicorn. The surprise to them all was that Waress seemed at peace with it. Every time he talked to Porline, he looked to where Porline would be when he finished talking. When Porline spoke, Waress was looking to where Porline would be when he finished speaking. The four older unicorns just shook their heads in amazement and walked closer to the two and then the six traveled on to the Plain.

Drrale and Frryle were looking forward to seeing their respective siblings. They had not been able to talk with them for quite some time, the life of their packs keeping them pretty well isolated from each other. The entire Valley pack was to make the journey to the Plain and they were all excited for the chance to meet with their kin from the Canyon.

Where do you go Cartile? Simitile asked her oldest. The fully grown, yet still young dragon froze just inside the cave entrance with a cringe.

I go to join Mike and Katie, for the gathering, he answered, trying to make his voice sound official, and older. His mother smiled and tried to remember her son was growing in many ways. He would pick a mate in the next few years, though everyone knew it was to be Jastile. They have been inseparable since they both were very young.

What of Betile and Dartile, did you forget that you promised to help watch over them at the gathering? she asked, not letting herself chuckle at the second cringe of her oldest. He issued a resigned sigh.

I have not forgotten. He dropped his head for just a moment and then quickly lifted it. Perhaps you could bring them with you, for I must talk with Mike first. Mike thinks there is something about to happen in the Plain and Mike and the Keeper may need me. He looked over his shoulder at his mother as he spoke. She nodded and looked to the two playing near the back of the cave, then back to the future leader of the dragons.

Very well Cartile, I will bring them, but do not forget your promise, she told him patiently, still fighting the chuckle as his face lit up.

Thank you mother, I will not forget. The dragon leapt from the cave entrance and flapped his wings towards the castle. His mother watched him go, spotting Jastile swooping in near him. She shook her head knowing that she would be watching her two youngest.

Alasteen, Queen of the fairy folk of the Plain, watched as her mate, Rarteen and the crew he had gathered, loaded the net with the harvest of fruits for the dinner that night at the castle. She heard the hum of wings and glanced behind her and saw Calteen flying toward her. She turned completely and faced the oncoming faxlie, struck again by outright beauty of the faxlies in general, but this one and his younger sister Rislear, the children of her best friend Risteen and her mate Catalear and the first faxlies to be born, were strikingly beautiful. The boy smiled as he drew near and Alasteen could have sworn his teeth sparkled.

Queen Alasteen, he said as he landed on the limb, beside her. Mother asks if there is anything that she can bring special? She also said to tell you that she and father will be delayed.

What delays them Calteen? she asked the boy, catching herself staring at the faxlies wings. She still found the combination of pixie wings and fairy wings, disconcerting, to say the least. Fairies, larger than pixies, had two large wings per side. Pixies had one large wing per side. Faxlies, only slightly bigger than fairies, had a larger wing centered between two only slightly smaller wings, making three per side. They were much stronger and faster fliers than either fairies or pixies.

It is the anniversary of their joining and they intend to celebrate privately, Calteen stated without embarrassment. Alasteen was used to the frankness of the faxlies. What is, is what is, was pretty much how they saw things.

Is it already their anniversary? Alasteen asked, trying to count the days and years. Calteen nodded and then looked at the work of the loading.

I will give them some help, he said, pointing to Rarteen’s crew and flew to assist. Alasteen nodded absently as she continued to count back.

Keeper, what does this meeting with wingless tell you? Hartile asked as they walked back to the castle. Cory glanced at the dragon and grinned slightly.

Two things Hartile, the Keeper of the Plain told him. Hartile waited but the Keeper did not say more. Hartile, the leader of the dragons, had become closer to Cory over the last few weeks and knew that there was something that was troubling him. The dragon did not completely understand the talks between the wingless and the Keeper, even though he heard the words spoken. They spoke of something called the Realm and the Guardians.

Is it improper that I should ask of these things? Hartile asked, using caution with his words. Cory again looked at the dragon and smiled an apologetic smile.

No Hartile. I am sorry. It’s just there are many new things that I must face and so must be faced by all of the Plain and Valley. I would ask of you that what we discuss now must stay between us. The dragon nodded his understanding of the delicacies involved. Cory saw this acceptance and continued. The first and hardest of these things, is to realize that there are more worlds of magic, than just the Plain and Valley. The second is that there has been and continues to be an evil that seeks to control all of them! The dragon stopped and looked intently at Cory.

The evil one that was called Narle, has been destroyed, the dragon stated firmly, but not loudly. You yourself have done this. Cory nodded.

Yes Hartile, but I do not talk of Narle, Cory stopped and faced the dragon; but of Narle’s teacher, Cory told him. Hartile saw the worry in the keepers eyes and felt the growth of it in himself. And, it would seem that my two oldest children already know of it, and more, Cory added with a frown. The dragons eyes open slightly wider. Cory suddenly smiled and waved at something behind Hartile. The dragon turned and could see the visitors coming from the Barrier Woods, not very far from them. We will talk of this later my friend, Cory said softly and Hartile nodded his agreement.

The Plains fairy, faxlie and pixie population arrived at the castle, followed quickly by the Valleys group. The only exception being Balteen and his bunch. Unicorns of all sizes had been gathering from first light. The wolves of the Valley arrived and mingled with the others, waiting for the Canyon pack to arrive with the visitors. Tom and DeeDee, with their entire family, including Michael and Maria arrived just after Mike had called out that they would be there soon. The Great Eagles joined shortly after those of the Valley. All were mingling in the courtyard when Porline came running into the court yard and not being able to stop in time, plowed into Poress and then announced that the visitors were just clearing the trees. Everyone surged out into the pasture around the castle to welcome them. The gathering had begun and everybody was looking forward to the next few days. Hatalast, his mate Relelist and the rest of the Great Bats arrived just before sunset and joined the festivities. The wingless arrived the next day and they did not bring good news.

    Chapter Two

Palysee stood by the nest of the Guardian Elder. He listened to labored breath of the one who had led the Realm since the death of the last Overseer, Tromlor. The many years had taken their toll on the Elder and Palysee felt the time was near. Palysee had been under the tutelage of the elder for as long as he could remember. The old one opened his eyes and looked at Palysee and then smiled. The Elder sang to him in the sing/song language of the wingless.

Your time approaches Palysee, be ready; your time approaches Palysee, be ready. A tending nurse came to other side of the nest the Elder lay in. She was waved away by the old one. His eyes never leaving the eyes of Palysee. He continued his song. You know what must be done; you know what must be done. You may not be sure how to do it, but you know what it is; you may not be sure how to do it, but you know what it is. The old one coughed and again the nurse returned to the nest side and tried to get the old one to drink a throat soothing concoction. The old one pushed her from him. You have received all that I have to give you; you have received all that I have to give you. It shall be your choice from now on, as to what shall be done; it shall be your choice from now on, as to what shall be done. The elder beckoned to another who stood by the opening of the cubicle. The much younger wingless approached the nest, his eyes wide in awe of the Elder. Dentysee, you will mark in the records, that as of this moment, Palysee is to be regarded as the leader of the Guardians; Dentysee, you will mark in the records, that as of this moment, Palysee is to be regarded as the leader of the Guardians. He will be the new Elder and is to be obeyed as I was; he will be the new Elder and be obeyed as I was! The old one turned his eyes to the scribe as the younger one opened his ledger and made the proper notations. Let it be told to all as you leave; let it be told to all as you leave. The old one waved the scribe from him. Dentysee backed from the cubical with the vow of his duty on his lips. The old one turned back to Palysee. Are you ready Palysee, are you; are you ready Palysee, are you? The last words of his song carried on the last breath of the old one. Palysee stood looking at the old one for some time before turning and leaving the infirmary. The first sentry he came to, on the porch of the infirmary, snapped to attention. Palysee looked at him for just a moment and then gave his first order as Elder.

Have all commanders meet in my chambers in one hour; have all the commanders meet in my chambers in one hour, he sang his command to the Guardian, who bowed and turned to spread the order. Palysee glided straight to the Elders building that was not far away and which was now his and into the room of the orb. The old one was right; the old one was right, Palysee sang to the orb and himself. I know what to do, but am unsure I know how or, what it may result in; I know what to do, but am unsure I know how or, what it may result in! Palysee bent to the egg shaped orb and began his incantation.

Retsepore was not the only one to hear Maltakrine’s roar of anger. The two servants he was in the process of giving instructions to started to visibly tremble, their eyes going wide as they looked at the Director.
