Joe Dolan - Bob Kinder
CHAPTER ONE
It is a pretty day in this beautiful southern city of Richmond, Virginia. The trees are in full bloom, the birds are singing their little hearts out, and it seemed like everything is right with the world. I looked at my watch and it said 4:28pm. I was about to get up from my desk and get ready to close up shop, when there was a knock on the door. I said, Come in.
The door opened, and in walked this good-looking tall blonde. She was dressed fit to kill. She had on a beautiful blue suit with gold buttons. Her blouse was open so I could see a lot of cleavage and her short skirt set off her long beautiful legs. The suit complimented her long blond hair flowing around her shoulders. She had a gorgeous gold necklace around her neck, with a matching bracelet that was encased with diamonds. The way they looked, I could tell she didn’t buy them at K-Mart!
She said, Are you Joe Dolan?
1 said, That’s the name on the door. Come in and have a seat.
Your secretary wasn’t at her desk, so I just knocked on the door.
That¹ s okay, my secretary left early today.
She walked over to the chair and sat down, crossing her long sleek legs, which she didn’t try to cover cause her skirt was so short. I guess she saw I was staring at her beautiful gams, because when I looked up, she had a smile on her face. Then she got real serious. She said, My name is Mavis Sterling.
She acted real nervous, and I could tell she was really upset.
She said Mr. Dolan; I’m frightened, a man has been following me.
I said, Did you recognize him?
She replied, No.
I asked her, What does he took like?
She described him as a tough looking guy, kind of foreign looking, about six feet four inches tall and weighs around 220 pounds.
She asked, Could you do anything about him?
I walked over to the window and looked down at the street and saw a guy standing there. He seemed to be watching my building. I said, Is that the guy that’s been following you?
Yes, that’s him.
Let’s go down and see what he’s up too.
We left the office and walked down to the street. I told her to walk down Main Street and see if he followed her. I waited a few minutes to see if he took off after her. Sure enough, he started walking after her. I caught up with him and grabbed him by the hand.
He said, Hey, what the hell are you doing?
Dolan said, Why are you following the blond?
He said, "What blonder
Don’t play dumb with me; you know who I’m talking about.
He shrugged his shoulders and started to walk away. Dolan grabbed him by his coat lapels and slammed him up against the building. Dolan could tell he had a gun when he put an arm lock on him. I suppose you have a Permit for this rod?
What’s it too you.
Well you had better have one.
Joe shoved him up against the building again and told him to take off and don’t let me catch you following that blond again. As he walked away, he mumbled something that Joe couldn’t make out.
Dolan caught up with Mavis and told her he didn’t think she would have any more trouble with him, although Dolan thought to himself, he wasn’t so sure that was the end of it. Joe then turned to Mavis and said.
Where is your car?
She said, I didn’t drive to town today, I took a cab.
Okay, 111 take you home.
They crossed Main Street to Joe’s Lincoln. He then held the door for her to get in
She said, Thanks Mr. Dolan, there are not too many gentlemen around anymore.
I said, There’s still a few of us around. Where do you live?
315 Melrose Lane.
Dolan pulled out into the traffic lane and headed west on Main, turned right on Ninth Street and headed for 1-95 north to 1-64 west to Gaskins Road. Then they went north on Gaskins to Broad Street, turned west and then proceeded to Melrose Lane. They drove about twelve miles out of downtown Richmond to a very exclusive part of town. Dolan turned to Mavis and said, You live in the high rent district, don’t you?
She replied, It’s comfortable.
I was beginning to put two and two together. Her last name Sterling and she lived on Melrose Lane. I said, Is J. Arthur Sterling your father?
She said, No, he’s my husband!
Well that old geezer is old enough to be her father, maybe her grandfather. One things for sure, he sure couldn’t satisfy her!!
When we got to Cliffside, she said, "Turn right here and go about three blocks to Melrose Lane and turn
