Emily Fitch

Emily Fitch was born in the small town of Hapeville, Georgia, just outside Atlanta. In 1959, she moved to Kentucky, where she has lived ever since, raising four children and more recently welcoming eleven grandchildren. Fitch began writing poetry in college, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in art from Asbury University. Her poetry was published in Outstanding Poets of 1998 and the National Library of Poetry’s Sketches of the Soul.  Fitch’s imagination and joy at sharing stories with her children and grandchildren has led her to publish this book. Last year, after a four-year battle with cancer, Fitch received a clean bill of health and a new drive to share her stories. When Fitch isn’t writing, she enjoys painting and cooking new creations from the Cooking Channel. She lives in Wilmore, Kentucky, with her husband of fifty-three years.

    The Lion Hunter

Sunlight crept into the dark room through a small opening in the wooden blinds, tickling sleepy eyes. Chandler bolted up, Mom! It’s Saturday. Grandmother and I are going on a safari! Are you ready?

Leaping from the top bunk, shouting, Watch out Jack! to his black lab scrambling out of the way.

Chandler crammed on camouflage shorts, a green shirt, hiking boots and tightened his insect collecting belt around his waist.

He surged through the kitchen snatching an energy bar from his mother’s hand and through the door leading into the garage. Slow down Chandler. We have plenty of time. Grandmother isn’t expecting you until ten o’clock, cautioned his mother.

Settling into their van, he checked his kit: three specimen bottles and one magnifying glass. Looking up into the rearview mirror he questioned, Mom, are there any monarch butterflies at Grandmother’s?

Not hearing her answer he concentrated on the streets rushing by
