About this ebook

Dougs third book of poetry Broken Silence is his trilogy of poetry, in which he returns to his roots of what inspired him to write. This collection of poems focuses on romance, heartbreak, family, motivation and dealing with the struggles that a person may encounter in life. The poems convey his feelings about how important loved ones are with the dedication poem to his mother, First Lady. The poem In Memory of You, was written for his Grandmother he lost to cancer.
Doug discusses the joys of love and finding that connection with a person in his heartfelt poems Notice You and Falling For You. He also addresses the pain of losing a relationship in his poems I Remember When and Off The Market, where sometimes putting your heart on the line does not guarantee,a person will end up with the result that was being sought out. In addition, his poem U.G.L.Y. inspires people that no matter what the opinion others may have of a person, there is strength to overcome any insecurity to find the path of secure inner happiness. The poem In My World addresses the struggles and pains that he views others dealing with in terms of unemployment and how it is affecting the world.
Dougs purpose in writing this book is to share his thoughts in a poetic form so others can see that no one is ever alone in feeling like the only outcast in the world. We are all unique in our own special way, and live every day as you are painting the world with your vision for everyone to see. Broken Silence will stimulate a persons mind and show that most valuable things in life primarily come from within and understanding others.

Allow me to undress my mind

As I discuss the issue at hand

    For you to understand

    But before I even start

    With pouring out my heart

    And say anymore

    I need to pause because

    The glass is already shattered

    Leaving scratches

    All over the floor

    I thought courting you

Would lead to a judgment of love

And I’ll go on the record to state

Our relationship was off the charts

Until we gave it a label

Broken Silence – Foreword by Justin Moore

When an artist creates a project, there is always room for discussion about the inspiration behind the work. Broken Silence is Doug’s first book in five years. And sooner than you can finish reading the first poem in the book, Doug will remind you that this project is much different than anything he has done before. And let’s not forget his now famous quote, It’s a more of a lyrical thing this time around. And you know what, he is right.

Doug is his own public relations machine. He will be glad to sit down and tell you what motivated him to write each poem. For those of you who heard his recent radio performances and interviews, the fervor and excitement in his voice is inescapable. Reclusive, evasive, and shy are not adjectives anyone can apply to my brother when his poetry is on center stage.

Broken Silence features poems that on the surface do not necessarily seek to be commercial. However, the lyrical content in Falling For You, I Remember When, Notice You and I Don’t Want You strike a chord with anyone who is navigating through the ebb and flow of finding and losing love. Glass Ceiling and Economy of Reality are anthems for the 9-to-5 employee that often toils without appreciation or recognition.

While Broken Silence is a raw account of one man’s journey through the world, the heavy gloss and polish of The Rebirth of a Lost Poet left some readers debating Doug’s motivation. Was the Rebirth written as an artistic departure from Fresh Thoughts? Writers, musicians, and anyone who produces something close to their heart may decide it is best to shake things up a bit, to keep the public guessing.

But in reality, Rebirth was written as an idealistic rendering of a dissolved relationship. Doug’s hope was that the book would somehow revive a relationship that had since lost its way. In other words, he was hoping that life would imitate art. The world should treasure Rebirth as the one time you could honestly judge the book by its cover and not offend the author.

Moving back chronologically, Fresh Thoughts was a revealing account of a young man coming to terms with adulthood and all the curveballs that come with growing up. Readers had a front row seat of how this particular young man was reacting to the world around him. Fresh Thoughts, in my opinion, stands as a symbol of passion and potential worthy of making the world stand tall.

Every artist is confronted with the challenge of moving on creatively and emotionally. This is especially true for the Doug during the post Rebirth era. As it turned out, the idealism of the Rebirth never translated to the real world as he had hoped for. But following the adage what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, Doug found strength to move on emotionally, spiritually and creatively. And it was this chapter of self-discovery that was the impetus for Broken Silence.

Broken Silence is less about continuing on the same path and more about embarking on a new one. Doug saw the fork in the road and decided that neither option would fit. Instead, he took an axe and made his way through the uncharted wilderness of his soul. His latest book is in no way, shape or form a flippant statement against Fresh Thoughts or Rebirth. Those of you who enjoyed those offerings will recognize the person who is leading you through the forest this time around. But this book is more about someone who is coming to terms with what is, rather than focusing on some idealistic, distant fantasy world.

The great thing about Broken Silence and the person that wrote it is that there is so much left for the reader to interpret. Is Doug talking about a long lost love, a long lost friend, a long lost business opportunity, or is this book simply a man venting about the ills and wills that keep the world spinning as it always has? If you are anything like me, you will compile a list of favorite poems. And you will defend that list like you would a cherished sports team. But if you ever get into a discussion with the author about the later, the correct answer is the Yankees.

However, if you choose to debate Doug about the
