    It

A ccording to the legends  . . . . Jesus received it in the arid wastes of the wilderness; Buddha received it under the Sri Maha Bodhi and Mohammed in a cave, in the dark womb of a desert night.

They were each given a choice: receive It or reject it. We know what they chose… so what choice did I have?

I received It during the blighted aftermath of a painful divorce, beside an old kitchen table, between a coffee stain and the desecrated carcass of a take-away roast chicken.

Now, as the morass in my life begins to shift and a kind of light gleams forth, I almost understand what it was that I received. But was it a boon or a burden? On reflection, perhaps neither. The evidence is too compelling. It’s taken me a few years to figure it out and I almost wish I hadn’t. It’s not particularly sensational and it sure aint’ pretty.

    In fact… it’s been a real disappointment.

There’s been no Heavenly chorus of Angels, no Enya theme song, no Michael and the Archangels gigging on some cloud, reverberating their hallelujahs throughout my divinely inspired, tingling, light-filled being. Nothing. Nada. Nyet. A major disappointment.

And despite the combined onslaught of several millennia of religious agit-prop and new age psycho-babble, it’s just not what it’s been hyped to be.

And what do I have to show for it? Nothing! I have no super powers, no miraculous second-sight; I still fall asleep when I meditate (if I can be bothered to meditate in the first place); I have no inner calm; I still have issues with anger and my mother (though not necessarily related, God rest her soul!); I’m still a hedonist; I still get completely distracted by the young and the beautiful and that nasty rash keeps returning every time my stress levels get too high and my immune system too low.

Taking stock, all in all, some might say it aint worth a piece of proverbial… except for one thing:

I know my meaning and my purpose

    and at last . . . I am free!

That much I can say. At long last I am finally… free.

Free of Original Sin. Free from guilt. Free from the Wheel of Karma and the ever-repeating, vicious cycle of a thousand life-times of the same old same old. Free from Heaven, free from Hell; free from God and free from the Devil. Free from having to do Yoga, or chant affirmations, or having to eat vegetarian; cutting out alcohol, mind altering drugs or giving up sex. Free from all the do’s and don’ts of dogma, doctrine and disinformation.

    Finally, I am free.

Free to do it my way because I want to, and not because somebody has told me I have to.

Free from all the propaganda and lies of the last two thousand years that have been holding me back from being exactly who and what I am, and that’s gotta be worth something.

Who gives a toss about miraculous super powers anyway? I mean really, how important is manifesting strange, perfumed powder from your fingertips or making jewels appear magically in the palm of your hands?

The point is: if you’re expecting something miraculous to happen just don’t hold your breath. Don’t expect too much from It. In fact, don’t expect anything at all. That’s the real secret. For each one of us It will be different. Don’t let anyone tell you it will be the same for you as it was for them because it won’t be. Or that it only happens a certain way to certain people who have done certain things; or only to spiritual people because they have done special spiritual things. Because it doesn’t. And that’s the kicker… you don’t have to do anything, let alone anything special. As for being spiritual, here’s the thing: you are spiritual no matter what you do or don’t do! So… you’re already half-way there to receiving It! Perfect!

And don’t think that It will only happen to you if you’re good. Good
