Isee them for the first time on the ferry from Lübeck via Helsinki to Tallinn. She gets on at our stop in Helsinki.
It is a cheap ferry trip across the Baltic Sea. The trip is much longer than a flight by plane, but having the Baltic Sea in front of you is simply beautiful. Besides, if you can, you should always enter a city from the water, I think. There is also live music: Fat Finns in over-bellied suits play Finnish tango. You are standing on a small stage in the main hall. They always play something that sounds like pop or like german Schlager music.
I'm sitting on the front deck of the ferry in the Bar Mare Nostre. In front of me is an overpriced cup of black tea on the small round table. It is screwed into the floor. That means only my cup will fall over when the sea is rough, that's comforting. The Art Deco style armchair is covered with artificial leather that grinds with every movement, but it is comfortable. There's this angel with the white-blond lion's mane sitting next to me. Her black eyebrows form a hard contrast to the light hair. A flowing tight dress of tightly knitted wool flows around her feminine curves. I am immediately captivated by the sight of it. There are those rare moments when the world really puts you in front of something that overwhelms you. To me, she is this overwhelming.
The band is changing from tango to something with a four quarter time that sounds like Uff-ta-ta. If it wouldn't be sung in Finnish, it could also be a German hit.
The angel's ice-blue eyes glance at me, then she turns to the green-blue Baltic Sea. Her lips are painted black, which makes her look paler than she is sure of. It's a cool, almost noble pallor, not sickly. This reinforces the impression of distance she radiates, as if she were a supernatural being. Their presence somehow seems out of place.
With difficulty I stifle the staring of the good ones. I've been single for a few months. It just didn't work out with us, at least my former girlfriend says. No, ex-girlfriend must be the name now.
