ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
First, my deepest appreciation goes to my family and friends who taught me how to enjoy nature and appreciate God’s wondrous creation. Included in my gratitude is Snow, my childhood friend and furry companion—always eager to join me on walks in the woods.
I also wish to thank the local Amish and Mennonite communities of southwestern Pennsylvania who quietly influenced my respect for living in harmony with the land.
Finally, the authors cited throughout this book deserve special acknowledgment for inspiring each of us with their words of praise and adoration of God’s gift of creation.

Introduction
Looking at the Earth from this vantage point… looking at this kind of creation and to not believe in God, to me, is impossible.
John Glenn, Astronaut¹
The Beauty of the Earth
In the beginning God created…
is a phrase that Christians know all too well. And we’re reminded that God is the primary mover and creator of all things by testimonials of when 72-year old John Glenn returned to space. Overwhelmed by God’s creation as he looked down on Planet Earth, Glenn spoke of how simply looking at the grandeur of creation is all that’s necessary to know that there’s a Creator God, a supreme being among us. Ignatius, the Spanish knight, hermit, and Catholic priest, spoke of seeing God in all things,
² while in the Reformed churches’ confession of faith, popularly known as the Belgic Confession, God’s creation is described as a most elegant book, wherein all creatures great and small, are as so many characters leading us to see clearly the invisible things of God.
³ God’s beauty is all around us, if we’re only willing to step outside and enjoy it.
Personal Reflections
Growing up in a small, farming community in Pennsylvania allowed me the benefit of enjoying a unique natural setting where the lifestyle was simple and God-centered. With the woods just a stone’s throw away from our back door, I was continuously playing, hiking, biking, fishing, and enjoying the outdoors in every way possible. In our little neighborhood, we watched daffodils and tulips bloom in glorious colors each spring; climbed apple and maple trees in the summer; picked plump, juicy grapes from the arbor in the autumn; and rode sleds down our tree-lined hill in the winter. That was the beginning of my growing appreciation of God’s majestic creation.
My childhood memories are endless: Sleeping under the stars on warm, summer nights, amazed at the Milky Way and countless stars, followed by the occasional shooting star… Exploring the hills, woods, and streams at my aunt and uncle’s farm… Walking into the path of a skunk and running fast and furiously for safety… Spotting deer at night on the ridgeline along the corn fields and cow pastures. Those are just a few of my special memories of the outdoors. Think about your own experiences as a young, free spirit in God’s world.
As an outdoor enthusiast now living along Southern California’s coastline, God has blessed me with my own special place
where I can commune with him daily. As I walk on the beach, I’m continuously reminded of songs of nature, such as This is My Father’s World
and For the Beauty of the Earth,
as I listen to the roaring surf, watch the graceful seagulls and pelicans in flight, and praise God for his wondrous sunsets. And as I travel this beautiful world of ours, I seek out those places known for their natural beauty and diverse wildlife, yet home is where
