    CHAPTER 1

    Wersel and Cuthbert Crab had spent most of the winter evenings, huddled round a big fire listening to Grandfather’s stories, or fast asleep wrapped up in thick seaweed blankets, that Grandmother had knitted during the long summer days.

    Now the snow had gone, and the sun was getting warmer, so they were able to get out and play on the beach by the water again.

    They still wore their thick seaweed hats and scarves that Grandmother had given them, because the wind was quite strong and cold, blowing off the Rocky Mountains, which still wore their caps of white snow.

    One morning as they were playing by the water, throwing stones to see who could make the biggest splash, they heard a funny sound, like someone crying.

    They looked around the beach, but couldn’t see anything, then they heard the sound again. It seemed to be coming from a large pool of water behind a rock.

    Whoever is crying? said Wersel. For when they looked into the pool it was quite deep and they couldn’t see anyone.
