The Sociopath and Me
I would like to acknowledge and pay tribute to those wonderful people, all over the world, who have known and found a way out of the depths of loss and despair. Those people didn’t wish for sudden miracles, but for the strength to endure the hell they were going through. And with this strength came a passion to create a better situation.
I want to acknowledge my late husband, Leon and my late son, Duane.
I want to thank my girls, Danyelle, Ray’Onna, Roslyn, and other family members who have encouraged me to follow my passion for writing. I also want to thank a few close friends who encouraged me to dream.
Furthermore, I want to give extra thanks and love to Ray’Onna for illustrating my novel, Danyelle for helping me to type and grammatically proofing my rough draft, and Roslyn for constantly reassuring me. Last but not least, my sisters, Laura, Juanita, Gwendolyn, and Rachel, my brothers, Joseph and Jack and my niece Pepper for their unyielding love and faith in me.
Prologue
Robert and Rachel Finley were suddenly awakened by loud banging on their doors and a nearly suffocating smell of smoke and loud noises from bullhorns begging them to get out of the house immediately because it was on fire.
They jumped out of bed and went looking for Angelica, but it was to no avail, she was nowhere to be found. They knew they had to vacate the house due to the suffocating smoke and the suddenness of flames.
When they left the house, there on the lawn sat their four year old child. Angelica was screaming hysterically one minute and laughing insanely the next. She was totally out of this orbit.
The parents were devastated. It was so difficult to imagine their four year old child was capable of trying to kill them while they slept.
Chapter 1
Rebecca’s parents knew their first born child, Angelica, had a mental problem, early on. They were hoping against hope that she would outgrow this chronic, obsessive behavior. The family physician, Doc Hopkins, advised them to think about psychiatric interactions. Yet the whole family, on both sides, felt the need to indulge her for a while since she was such a lovely child.
At four years old, Angelica was very obsessive. She was cunning, manipulative and had to be the bell of the ball on every occasion. Her eyes, which were her best feature, could transform into the hardest, cruelest look that would frighten anyone, even her parents.
The only time Angelica would behave was when her parents and other family members treated her like a princess.
One day Angelica overheard her parents discussing a new baby. She burst into the room screaming, I am the only baby in this house and there will be no more!
Her body became rigid as her eyes rolled into the back of her head and she screamed the most piercing sound, like a wounded animal. She then started laughing hysterically, until her body went limp and she blacked out and fell to the floor.
The parents called the doctor and explained the latest tantrum. They were ready to discuss the psychiatric interaction. Doc Hopkins referred them to a psychiatrist that could see them the next day. After Doc Hopkins sedated Angelica, they put her to bed. The parents went to bed shortly after.
After a while, Angelica woke up and went to the kitchen for a butcher’s knife. She went back to her room and slashed her bed, drapes, and clothes, all her dolls and scratched up the furniture. She destroyed the downstairs as much as she could. Then set fire to everything.
Angelica quietly left the house. She sat on the lawn and watched the fire begin, while laughing hysterically and panting like a wild animal. She was totally out of her mind and loving every minute of it. Angelica was too young to know that the family had a security system. Just as the house started to burn, the Fire and Sheriff’s Department were alerted and were en route to the Finley’s house.
They found Angelica laughing hysterically as she sat on the lawn. They were unable to get a sensible response from her. They banged on the door, yelling for the family to come out. The parents smelled smoke, and were looking for Angelica but couldn’t find her. Seeing the flames erupt, made the parents finally exit the house. And there on the lawn sat their daughter, laughing and screaming hysterically.
It was so difficult for the parents to accept that their four-year old child had maliciously tried to murder them by burning them alive in their sleep.
Angelica was hospitalized for nearly three months before a diagnosis and medication were devised. She was finally diagnosed as chronic obsessive and also showing signs for sociopathic tendencies. She was prescribed meds to be taken orally twice daily. And a monthly injection to be administered by the staff of the psychiatric unit.
Chapter 2
Rebecca Elayne Finley was born weighing 10 pounds and was 21 inches in length. She was a big baby but the delivery was easy. Rebecca looked nothing like Angelica, whereas Angelica was small and pale, Rebecca was golden and healthy.
The parents had a meeting with the families on both sides of them and discussed Angelica’s mental state. The parents demanded that Rebecca had to be protected by any and every means necessary from Angelica.
And that meant isolation from the family’s affection towards Rebecca until Angelica’s mental illnesses were cleared up. The whole family agreed. They also agreed to continue treating
