I would like to thank and acknowledge my brothers Larry and Pete, for their encouragement and support in the completion of this book. I would also like to thank Gloria Garcia for her support, encouragement and her thoughtful practical advice. A special thanks goes to Mr. Karl Kampe and the members of the Nassau County Civil Service Commission, for their permission to use past job postings, to help me illustrate how to apply for civil service jobs.

Thank you Lil, for all your support, understanding, and encouragement. Thank you Dale Cole, one of my co-workers who helped me in the early days many years ago to get this project started. Thanks to all of my friends and associates and patients who encouraged me to write this book.

I would also like to thank all my buddies at Newsday who initially thought I was crazy to go to school and study so much to be a Nurse. My buddies also had some spicy Pseudo names for me that I cannot mention in this text. Later after so many guys were laid off, they told me how much they respected me for following through with my goal to graduate from Nursing School and become a Registered Nurse. I miss all of those guys; Austin, Bob, Pete, Jim, Mark, Sweetpea, Kupo, Rick, Mike, Kevin, Janice, Dave, Rock and everybody else I did not mention. I’ll never forget you. Finally, thanks to my publisher, for all your help and assistance in the production and publishing of this book.

    About the Author

I have been working since I was eight years old.

From the time I was eight until I was nineteen years old I had several jobs from landscaping work, newspaper routes, helping the milkman deliver milk, drug store delivery boy, janitorial work, supermarket clerk, stock boy.

My mother, who had been divorced for several years, remarried. My mother, my younger brother, and me moved from Virginia to New York where my step-father lived and worked. I finished high school in New York, the tenth to the twelfth grades. During this time my mother became pregnant and had my step-sister.

My step-sister was born severely retarded and she had difficulties maintaining stable blood sugar levels and had seizure disorders. Much time and effort was needed to attend to her needs.

During this time, the family moved from Queens, New York to Long Island New York.

My step-father also had a couple of seizures and had to be hospitalized. When I finished high school I secured a job at a Newspaper company, Newsday, Inc.

I always worked the night shift, and went to school in the evening. Whenever I was not going to school, I was working a second job. I was sleep deprived most of the time. My mother and step father usually woke me up at sometime during the day arguing at each other, about whatever their issues were. As time moved on I noticed that they were arguing with more frequency, but I didn’t pay much attention to it. My mother told me that my step father threatened her one night while I was at work and he was in a rage. My step father worked as a security guard. He always said he would never own
