    Foreword

In this book you’ll meet my mother whose journey as a healer began before I took a single step. As you read about her life you will discover the roots of what healed me and what allowed her to create a community around herself and my father that supported our family. This is a love story, a story of courage, a story of breakthroughs that allowed my mother to go beyond what most people consider conventional and discover her passion for healing. Laugh and cry with her, and have a good read.

    Chad W. Irvine

What if one woman told the truth about her life? The world would split open.

    Preface

The Rev. Rosalyn L. Bruyere has had a profound effect on my life. My potential to experience joy and peace has expanded. By being in her presence for lengths of time I have had the courage to experiment and develop my own method of healing. To say thank you is indeed an understatement.

    The Arrival of Chad

I have an appointment with the gynecologist

Afterwards I leave a note for Bruce

    It says

You are neither impotent nor sterile

Our baby is due December 15th

    * * *

    I say

    Let’s take a Lamaze class

    It prepares parents for childbirth

We will learn about the different phases of labor

and about breathing techniques for each phase

The husband is trained to be the wife’s coach

    through labor and delivery

    Bruce says

I don’t want to go into the delivery room

    I say

I don’t want to go into the delivery room either

    We take the course

    * * *

Six weeks before our due date

    my water breaks

On the way to the hospital

    Bruce says

    We may never catch up

    * * *

    The obstetrician says

    Your vaginal muscles

    could crush the baby

    I recommend a caudal

    and a high forceps delivery

    The anesthesiologist says

    Premature births

seem to be harder on the mothers

    The obstetrician says

    The baby’s heartbeat is halved

every time you have a contraction

We will watch for fetal trauma

I am wheeled into the delivery room

    Bruce holds my hand

The mirror for us to watch the birth

    is pushed aside

    We look at each other

    At the obstetrician’s request

    the anesthesiologist pushes

on the top of my abdomen

The nurse from the East Nursery

    whisks away a small bundle

    It’s a boy

    * * *

    Hours after the birth

    the pediatrician says

Your baby has hyaline membrane disease

a sac covers the underdeveloped lung

    It can be fatal

    The prognosis is not good

    I ask

    How soon will we know

if he is going to get better?

    He says

    With this disease

    the infants always get worse

    before they get better

    The next day he says

    Hyaline membrane disease

is no longer a threat to your baby’s life

Some of the interns in the East Nursery

    feel Chad never had it

    Others feel

    an incredible recovery has occurred

    That night the pediatrician says

Your baby has a beta strep infection

that may have gone into his spinal fluid—

    spinal meningitis

    The prognosis is not good

Days later the friendly intern says

This is a situation where everything had to go right

    and it did

You delivered at one of the top two preemie facilities

    in the United States

Your obstetrician took cultures after the delivery

and sent the results to the nursery

    Penicillin was administered immediately

    The unfamiliar intern says

You gave the beta strep infection to your son

You might think you have a normal child

then at the age of three

    discover he’s retarded

    Cerebral Palsy

    Chad is two years old

For the first time we go to a physiatrist

    a doctor of physical medicine

    He says

    Your son has cerebral palsy

    I call Bruce at work

I do not intend to tell him

    I say

Bring home a bottle of scotch

    He asks

How was the doctor’s appointment today?

    I say

    Chad has cerebral palsy

    Later Bruce tells me

    When you called

    I must have turned ashen

An employee was in my office

    After you hung up

    he said

"I don’t care what it is

I’ll do anything I can to help"

    We Visit the Pediatrician

    I ask Chad’s pediatrician

Are there different treatments for cerebral palsy

    I should be reading about?

    He says

    Don’t read

    You should feel lucky

to have such a fine physiatrist

in the area to care for him

    Doctors

    In the first grade

    I swallow a bobby pin

    My mother says

We will go to the doctor

    Everything will be all right

    * * *

I am a young single woman

    recovering from an automobile accident

I lie on the doctor’s table

study the black and white anatomy chart on the wall

    It is after hours—

less charge for the heat treatments

    My concentration increases

as the doctor’s hands travel higher

on the inside of my thighs

    I look at him

His eyes roll to the ceiling

    I
