    CHAPTER ONE

O ne minute she was successfully navigating the stairway on her new heels – next she was on her butt wincing in pain. And why, oh why, was it Samuel Jordan to enter at this particular moment.

Sam hurried over to her and carefully helped her to feet. Ornella grabbed onto his six foot, two inch, two hundred plus pounds of pure muscle and scrambled to her feet.

On the pretext of dusting her backside she tried to gather her wits about her so she could look into his gorgeous golden brown face and thank him.

You alright? he asked, his kind, sparkly, brown eyes showing only concern. Somehow his kindness was hard to take-and she knew why.

I’m okay. She kept taking furtive glances around her, hoping that no-one else had seen her collapse. Normally, at this time of the day, that period between the afternoon coffee break and home time, most of her co-workers were at their cubicles. In one part of her barely functioning brain she thought, thank God, for technology. Instead of messengers, delivering mail or whatever, all over the place, they sent emails now. Otherwise everyone would have witnessed her big backside of the floor.

Hmm—, she groaned, what a way to get attention—by literally falling down on the job. In the foyer of one of the more prestigious buildings in downtown Port of Spain, with no-one other than the CEO, himself to pick her up off the luxuriously tiled floor.

You’re sure? Sam ran his hands gently down her shoulders and arms, his knees bent and his body braced just in case she keeled over again. Ornella seemed to be unaware that she was standing in a rather precarious manner, one shoe still on her foot while the other shoe was across the corridor, in front of the elevator. I’ve had quite a few women fall for me but never like this.

That remark seemed to bring her to her senses. Ornella jerked out of his gentle hands and pulled back to glare up into his beautiful, smiling face. Opened her mouth to give him a piece of her mind and ended up in a crush against him instead as the one shoe that was still on her foot went skidding from beneath her.

In a flash, Sam had both arms securely wrapped around her. After all, how was he to help this big, beautiful damsel in distress. They were glued together and Sam couldn’t help the smile on his face as he noticed her head barely reached his shoulders. Her arms were gripping those sameshoulders .Tight. He could hear her heart racing. Did he dare hope that race was, not only because of her escaped fall but also because of—him? He inhaled and got a whiff of her cologne. Funny, she smelled just like the Old Spice cologne his deceased uncle use to wear.

    Ornella? Sam whispered.

    Yes, she whispered back.

"If you don’t let go of me now I’ll have no choice but to kiss you.

Ornella flew out of his arms just as the elevator pinged and the door opened, allowing a rush of people to exit and causing the guy in front to stumble over the shoe lying discarded and forgotten in front of the doors.

I’ll take that, thanks, she called as she hurried over and took the offending thing from the guy’s hand. She pretended not to hear his expletive as her eyes scanned the rest of the corridor frantically for the other side. Lord, Ornella couldn’t remember the last time she was so embarrassed. At least no-one was lingering. They were all headed out the large glass doors in every direction. Where the hell was the other shoe? she whispered, unaware just how loudly she’d vented her frustration.

Looking for this? was Sam’s overly casual question. His eyes snared hers. For a heartbeat—or two. Ornella forced her breathing under control as she walked over to him and plucked the shoe from his fingers. Even though she didn’t want to she was glad for the excuse to bend and slip the heels back on her feet. Anything, so she wouldn’t have to look at Sam right now.

Too soon, she squared her shoulders, mustered her dignity and looked into his eyes. "Thank you, Mr. Jordan.

Sam waited for the couple who were about to enter the building to get to the elevator before he leaned down and whispered in her ear. Ornella noticed his mouth had a little slant, just a hint of a smile but his eyes, those jewels were glitteringly
