    Preface

This book is dedicated to you who have higher goals and dreams for your life, and desire more insight, understanding and inspiration to make the necessary changes. This book is also dedicated to you who have a good life, but still have goals you want to achieve and dreams still unfulfilled. No matter your present situation, hold on to the image of a life in which you have made the desired changes, have reached your goals and are living your dreams.

Have you ever wished that you had a personal coach who could take your hand, lead the way and not let go? An advisor who would give you increased self-understanding and more knowledge on the way to your goals? Someone who motivates and inspires you to continue on to a successful end? You may not have a personal advisor, but from now on you have this book to coach you, inspire you, and lead you all the way up to your goal. This book is your personal helper. It is here to accompany you all the way. You now have help that you can hold in your hand for as long as you want.

I know neither your specific situation nor your goals and dreams, but the probability is great that your wishes for the future have much in common with the goals and dreams of others. Therefore, the opportunities and challenges faced will also be similar. This book illustrates situations you will recognize coupled with clear solutions you can use. The structure of the book is designed for easy usage. You can have your helper at hand at all times. You can easily find just the advice, guidance and tools you require right when you need them.

For more than 20 years as an advisor and trainer, I have had the pleasure of experiencing how people have managed to improve their life situation and turn goals and dreams into reality. Men and women of different ages and backgrounds, with different resources and ambitions have done it. It does not matter where you begin. The most important thing is that you really want a change. If you can dream it, you can achieve it.

Life is what happens to you while you’re busy making other plans

    John Lennon

The Beatles legend John Lennon claimed that, Life is what happens to you while you are busy making other plans. Much indicates that he describes the situation of many people.

Before you begin, remember that change is a process. You are not embarking on a time-restricted project. The purpose is to enhance your opportunity to give your life the content you want. Then you will be able to reword John Lennon, so that life is what you enjoy, while you are making further plans.

Each chapter opens with a photo. Let the photos inspire you to immerse yourself in deeper contemplation. You will recognize the described situations and challenges from both your private life and working life. You will see what others have learned and how they have made changes. Take the time to think about the reality of your situation. Do not deny the circumstances that leave you unsatisfied in life, but neither should you let unfortunate life experiences block your ability to take advantage of the energy offered in these pages. This is a workbook. Each chapter ends with specific tasks. Performing the tasks is how you will achieve the changes you desire.

As added inspiration you get the opportunity to become better acquainted with yourself. You are invited to take a simple profile analysis that will give you an objective and specific description of your personality profile. The analysis is performed online, and uses the same model presented in Chapter 2, You and Your Personality. Because you purchased this book, the analysis is free. Log-in information is located at the back of the book.

You can live your dreams, and you are able to make the necessary changes that make it all possible. Believe in yourself, and decide. Today. You are the resource that you have been waiting for. You just need to know how to exploit the attributes you already possess. Just as President Barack Obama said,

Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.

    Barack Obama

    Let’s get started!

    Introduction

You are unique in every way. There is only one of you, and you are the only one who knows what works best for you when it comes to learning and development. Nevertheless, I would like to give you some practical advice on the best way to use this book. It is not a novel, and it is not about other people. It is all about you. Read it and use it as a workbook. Make remarks and notes directly in the book as you read. Use highlighters to set priorities and make notes about different ways to follow up on parts and advice that are important to you. Be focused, and repeat sections and key elements in order to truly absorb and digest what you read. Relate the described situations and coordinating advice to your own life. You will recognize some situations more than others. If you find you have received similar advice and recommendations in the past, you should ask yourself this essential question. Do I utilize the advice I receive, and do I follow the recommendations in my everyday life?

Regardless of who you are or what you have been, you can be what you want to be.

    W. Clement Stone

Whether you establish personal or career goals, economic or social goals, bear in mind that progress will not occur at a steady pace. During some periods you will experience significant gains, while in other periods you will feel stagnant. Obstacles and challenges will appear in all targeted processes, this is natural. If there were no resistance on the way to the target, far more people would reach their goals, and live their dreams. So do not get depressed and defeated when times are tough. It is during tough times that those who succeed distinguish and separate themselves from others. Progress, success and making dreams come true, is about not giving up. Experience teaches us that by continuing to practice good advice and by keeping a steady course, we will further develop both mental and practical skills. If you persist, sooner or later you will succeed.

If you’re walking down the right path and you’re willing to keep walking, eventually you’ll make progress.

    Barack Obama

Fundamental to all progress and joy of life is the need to take responsibility for you. It is not someone else’s fault that things are what they are or that the situation is not the way you dreamed it would be. Thus, it is not the weather, nor is it your spouse or your boss. It is not because the train was delayed or the shop was closed, and it is not your work colleague, the customer, your horoscope or the cash shortage that is to blame when things do not go your way. In order to successfully create the desired changes, it is imperative that you always recognize your need to facilitate. It is you who have to do the job. This is true no matter how the world around you contributes to or limits your opportunities. A significant message of this book is that there is only one person who is responsible for your life situation both today and in the future. It is you.

No matter the situation regarding career, health, economy, love life or whatever else you can imagine, the responsibility will be yours. It can be difficult to accept and live with such an acknowledgment. It is particularly so when you consider that many of us live in an abundant culture believing that we have the right to a comfortable life. However, if you take responsibility for the negative things, you should also take the credit for the good things in your life. Honor yourself for what you have created, and be generous with praise and compliments for you. Acknowledge what you have achieved, because it is just being sure that you really have the ability to create and build, that enables you to shape the future you desire.

There is only one person who is responsible for your life situation today and in the future;you. Therefore you should also give yourself credit for the positive things you have created.

What is involved in taking full responsibility for your own life and the way forward? You will certainly have to fight your own personal saboteurs. These are the excuses and explanations that are used when things do not go as planned. All the external circumstances that have been convenient to rely on must be erased. Lack of knowledge, fear of the unknown, not the right situation, too little funds, too little time and believing that the next opportunity will be better are all disclaimers for responsibility. If you are going to create a future where your dreams for life walk hand in hand with your reality, you must take full responsibility for both what is and is not happening. You are the architect of your own dreams.

A man who dares to waste one hour of time has not discovered the value of life.

    1 The Choice of Path

Life has given you a number of opportunities. The choices you made in the past have put you on the path you walk today. The choices you make in the future will determine whether you continue along the same path or change direction.

A person who never made a mistake never tried anything new.

    Albert Einstein

Lina is in her early 40s. One day, during a break in a course regarding personality profiles and communication, she came to sit next to me. She is usually smiling and happy, but this day she looked like something was bothering her. I looked at her, but did not get to say anything before she spoke. Can I ask you a personal question? Course participants often have questions outside the program, and sharing experiences is always pleasant whether the sharing occurs inside or outside of the seminar topics. So I said she was welcome to ask. I feel that I’m not on the right path in my life. I constantly try to make the best of every situation I’m in, but the years go by and I just keep heading in the same direction without being able to do something new and more interesting. Lina hesitated slightly before she continued, I feel like I’m stuck, and I wish that I had made other decisions when I was younger and had so many opportunities. Then she looked at her feet as if confirming that she was wearing a matching pair of shoes.

I sensed her embarrassment. Her question had become a confession. I did not want her to regret taking the initiative, so I quickly responded. Lina, what you feel you share with quite a lot of people. Unfortunately, that is no consolation and does not make you feel better, but you are touching on something that applies to many especially during this stage of life. I waited for her reaction, but she remained silent. So I continued, "It’s natural and important to be concerned about how you live your life. The fact that you are aware that you want something new is the very foundation for making a change. She looked up at me, and I thought I spotted a hint of a smile on her face. After a few more seconds of silence she responded with the vital question. But what can I do to change the direction of my life?"

At this point, we agreed to continue the conversation at a later date when there would be ample time to better examine her previous choices, to see how those choices lead Lina to her current situation and then to discuss her wishes for the future. What Lina and I eventually talked about and what she decided to work on, are the same basic principles described in this book. There’s no magic formula that can create lasting changes in your life. Rather, there are a number of
