The phone shrieked eight times. Marshall counted each ring until he ran out of fingers. Then he pulled himself off the sofa and walked slowly to the phone. He glanced at the dusty grandfather clock in the far corner.

God, he complained, the time. He scratched his long, unkempt beard with his left hand while he reached for the phone with the right, the hand with all of its fingers. Marshall. Speak, he mumbled into the phone. But the line was dead. Hello? He listened for a full minute. Always in a hurry. People. He dropped the receiver back into its cradle.

He stretched his arms over his head and yawned, revealing a mouthful of gold teeth and silver bracing. He looked at the grandfather clock, again, and thought he should wind it up. Been about twenty-two years, he mumbled to himself. Twenty-two and a half, I guess, since...

The phone screeched again. Marshall waited until the phone rang three times then casually picked up the receiver.

    Marshall. Speak.
