I Am Not One of Those Who Left the Land
Anna Akhmatova
1922
Introduction
Anna Akhmatova is one of the most important Russian poets of the twentieth century. Her life encompassed some of the most violent and chaotic periods of Russian history, including the years of World War I, the Russian Revolution, the Russian civil war, World War II, and the Stalin years. Her poem I Am Not One of Those Who Left the Land
speaks of her decision to remain in Russia, despite great hardship, loss, and deprivation, at a time when many artists, writers, and intellectuals fled the country.
I Am Not One of Those Who Left the Land
appeared in the volume Anno Domini MCMXXI, published in 1922. It would be Akhmatova's last book for fourteen years because of governmental suppression of her work. The poem speaks to the pride Akhmatova feels for herself and for those who have chosen to endure the difficult years in Russia. Those who have left the land to live a life of exile elicit her pity and anger.
Akhmatova died in 1966, and in the years since her death, her reputation and stature has increased each year. Many contemporary poets look to her work for inspiration and instruction. I Am Not One of Those Who Left the Land
appears as I Am Not with Those Who Abandoned Their Land
in the updated and expanded edition of The Complete Poems of Anna Akhmatova, translated by Judith Hemschemeyer, and edited and introduced by Roberta Reeder, published in 2000 by Zephyr Press.
Author Biography
Anna Andreyevna Gorenko, later known as Anna Akhmatova, was born near Odessa, Russia, on June 23, 1889, to Andrey Gorenko and Inna Erazmovna Stogova. Both of her parents were of aristocratic heritage, and the family was wealthy. When Akhmatova was quite small, her family moved to Tsarkoe Selo, a suburb of St. Petersburg, Russia. There, Akhmatova attended school. However, when she was ten years old, she suffered from a life-threatening illness. Her biographers associate the illness with the beginning of her writing career, as she began producing poetry
