Unleashing The Power Of Your Tongue - Mike Ndlovu

    Introduction

    Creative Power of Spoken Words

"What you say is the reflection of your values." – Unknown

Many people, despite profound teachings they receive on the importance of choosing words, still continue to take the subject and the practice lightly. Guarding our lips is one of the sure warnings and crucial advice given to us by the Word of God. We are taught everything that exists in the universe came to be through the spoken word. God declared, "Let there be, as recorded in the Book of Genesis chapter one, and everything He spoke came into existence. Words are a very powerful force of creation and change. No one puts it better than Paul in the Book of Hebrews when he says, Faith convinces us that God created the world through his word. This means what can be seen was made by something that could not be seen." (Hebrews 11:3 GW)

Since humans were created in the image and likeness of God, we possess the same nature and power God has, which are ‘creative words’, A person’s speaking ability provides for his stomach. His talking provides him a living. The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love to talk will have to eat their own words. (Proverbs 18:20-21 GW)

    Tested and certified

We are told in Scripture, soon after God created man, He subjected him to a very important test, which was the first to assess his abilities, "The LORD God had formed all the wild animals and all the birds out of the ground. Then he brought them to the man to see what he would call them. Whatever the man called each creature became its name." (Genesis 2:19 GW, bold emphasis mine). In this scripture, we are told ‘whatever he called the animal it became its name’. That is how much power man was bestowed with. Man displayed his ‘likeness’ or resemblance to God by using words to call things into existence.

Several times in the New Testament, Jesus revealed how our mouths or words can affect the outcomes of our lives, Your words will be used to judge you, to declare you either innocent or guilty. (Matthew 12:37 GNB). Furthermore, demonstrating the power of spoken words, we find Jesus speaking to lifeless things and His Words yielded the expected results, "The next day, when they left Bethany, Jesus became hungry. In the distance he saw a fig tree with leaves. He went to see if he could find any figs on it. When he came to it, he found nothing but leaves because it wasn’t the season for figs. Then he said to the tree, ‘No one will ever eat fruit from you again!’ His disciples heard this. While Jesus and his disciples were walking early in the morning, they saw that the fig tree had dried up. Peter remembered what Jesus had said, so he said to Jesus, ‘Rabbi, look! The fig tree you cursed has dried up.’ Jesus said to them, ‘Have faith in God! I can guarantee this truth: This is what will be done for someone who doesn’t doubt but believes what he says will happen: He can say to this mountain, ‘Be uprooted and thrown into the sea,’ and it will be done for him.’" (Mark 11:12-14, 20-23 GW). Jesus’ ministry was largely accomplished by words. He used His words, most of the time, to effect change in people’s lives and to direct forces of nature. (Mark 4:39-41; Matthew 8:13)

    A life of a believer

Being a Christian can be a very challenging position in this day and age, where people depend much on reasoning, proof and tangible things. Our medical science has advanced so far, miracles have little place, if any, in many people’s daily lives. The contemporary practices and ever-increasing knowledge of the material world have deemed the supernatural phenomenon virtually mystical. Even the most religious or spiritual people have come to see a belief in the miraculous works of God as mysterious, if not irrelevant and unbefitting this era. Some call it ‘high-expectations’, false claims, or it is even rejected and criminalised in some regions.

Amidst the debates and doubts on this spiritual matter, the question arises: In reality, what is belief or believing? According to the basic definition of the word, believing means accepting a statement as true without physical proof at the time. This requires a deep conviction or acceptance of the claim and often it is the backdrop upon which the believer puts his or her trust. Believing, which is sometimes referred to as faith, is not just a mere religious opinion you hold but more of who you believe - your object of faith. Our faith is based on the God Who created the universe in its vastness. He is the source of all life and that which exists in the universe. The One who lacks nothing and Who declares, I am the LORD! There is nothing too difficult for me. (Genesis 18:14 CEV). This God extends Himself to His creation by getting involved in our daily lives. He has made numerous promises and pledged His faithfulness in them. As it is written, God is not like people, who lie; He is not a human who changes his mind. Whatever he promises, he does; He speaks, and it is done. (Numbers 23:19 GNB). One thing a believer can rest assured of is that God honours His Word and keeps His promises. What He says He will do is guaranteed, Certainly, Christ made God’s many promises come true. For that reason, because of our message, people also honour God by saying, ‘Amen!’ (2Corinthians 1:20 GW)

Whether the promise is for eternal life, healing, prosperity or a life of victory, as believers we say "Yes"!

    Fact verses the truth

When you base your faith on the Word of God, you will have to make up your mind whether you are going to live by facts of what is happening around you or by the truth found in the Holy Scriptures. You see, life is engulfed by many happenings which become facts to our experiences. Facts are realities we cannot deny. They are what we face daily and what people see in us. Whether you are poor, broke, a failure, sick, hurting, unemployed, homeless, alone, rejected and neglected, single parent or somehow down and out, it is a fact. However, the truth tells a different story about your circumstance. It reveals how it really is in the spirit realm as designed by God, We have everything we need to live a life that pleases God. It was all given to us by God’s own power, when we learned that he had invited us to share in his wonderful goodness. (2Peter 1:3 CEV). The truth goes against facts in that it defies the status quo. Consider the following Scriptures in relation to facts and the truth:

    For a poor person:

"You know that our Lord Jesus Christ was kind enough to give up all his riches and become poor, so that you could become rich."

    (2 Corinthians 8:9 CEV)

For a weak person, the truth says:

"Beat your ploughshares into swords, and your pruning hooks into spears: let the weak say, I am strong."

    (Joel 3:10 KJV)

For a sick person, the truth says:

"So God’s promise came true, just as the prophet Isaiah had said, ‘He healed our diseases and made us well.’"

    (Matthew 8:17 CEV)

For someone on the verge of giving up or feeling overwhelmed by the vicissitudes of life, the truth is:

"I know what it is to be poor or to have plenty, and I have lived under all kinds of conditions. I know what it means to be full or to be hungry, to have too much or too little. Christ gives me the strength to face anything."

    (Philippians 4:12-13 CEV)

For someone facing death, the truth says:

"My friends, I want you to know what a hard time we had in Asia. Our sufferings were so horrible and so unbearable that death seemed certain. In fact, we felt sure that we were going to die. But this made us stop trusting in ourselves and start trusting God, who raises the dead to life. God saved us from the threat of death, and we are sure that he will do it again and again."

    (2 Corinthians 1:8-10 CEV)

For someone facing impossibilities or difficult challenges, the truth says:

"Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us."

    (Ephesians 3:20 MKJV)

These are but a few of the many biblical promises for believers, and it is through the knowledge and the application of the Word they become a reality in our lives:

"And now I commend you to God and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified."

    (Acts 20:32 ESV)
