Despite growing accustomed to their new life with their grandfather, the Alden children still pine for the adventures they once had while living in their abandoned boxcar. Luckily, their grandfather picks up on this hunger. On the last day of school, Henry, Jessie, Violet, and Benny run home to their grandfathers to find the surprise of a lifetime. He tells them that they get to spend the summer on his private island.

The only other person on the island with them are Captain Daniels and his handyman, Joe. But Joe seems to be more than just your ordinary handyman. The kids find out why as they enjoy exciting adventures on Surprise Island.

Although Surprise Island was published in 1949, it is still easily enjoyed by children of today.

Gertrude Chandler Warner

Gertrude Chandler Warner (1890–1979) was an American author who specialized in children's literature. The Boxcar Children is her most well-known work, as she went on to write eighteen more books in the series. The series became so popular, that it continues on today.
