A FINAL WISH

Breathing in the salty air, I grinned at my friend Steve and took a sip of my strawberry daiquiri.

‘It’s gorgeous here,’ said Steve, then 34, watching families play in the sparkling sand. ‘What a perfect place to bring children.’

It was September 2005, and we were on holiday in Cape Cod for a friend’s wedding. We’d met four years before, when I was a temp at the office where Steve worked. He was funny, with a charming Geordie accent that made you feel instantly at ease.

We’d always been close, and this holiday only brought us closer. When we got home, over time, our friendship developed into something more.
