About this ebook
Instead of memorizing vocabulary words, work your way through an actual well-written novel. Even novices can follow along as each individual English paragraph is paired with the corresponding Hungarian paragraph. It won't be an easy project, but you'll learn a lot.
William Shakespeare
William Shakespeare was born in April 1564 in the town of Stratford-upon-Avon, on England’s Avon River. When he was eighteen, he married Anne Hathaway. The couple had three children—an older daughter Susanna and twins, Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet, Shakespeare’s only son, died in childhood. The bulk of Shakespeare’s working life was spent in the theater world of London, where he established himself professionally by the early 1590s. He enjoyed success not only as a playwright and poet, but also as an actor and shareholder in an acting company. Although some think that sometime between 1610 and 1613 Shakespeare retired from the theater and returned home to Stratford, where he died in 1616, others believe that he may have continued to work in London until close to his death.

SCENE I
1. Szín
Athens, and a wood not far from it.
Athén és egy közeli erdő
Athens. A room in the Palace of THESEUS.
Enter THESEUS, HIPPOLYTA, PHILOSTRATE, and Attendants.
Athén. Terem Theseus palotájában.
Theseus, Hippolyta, Philostrat és kísérők jőnek
THESEUS
Now, fair Hippolyta, our nuptial hour
Draws on apace; four happy days bring in
Another moon; but, oh, methinks, how slow
This old moon wanes! she lingers my desires,
Like to a step-dame or a dowager,
Long withering out a young man's revenue.
THESEUS
Gyorsan közelget; szép Hippolytám,
A nászi óra; négy boldog nap új
Holdat derít föl; ah, de mily soká
Fogy e vén hold nekem! s epeszti vágyam,
Mint özvegy asszony, hervadt mostoha,
Ki egy fiú örökjén teng sokáig.
HIPPOLYTA
Four days will quickly steep themselves in nights;
Four nights will quickly dream away the time;
And then the moon, like to a silver bow
New bent in heaven, shall behold the night
Of our solemnities.
HIPPOLYTA
Majd csak leszáll e négy nap éjbe már,
S elálmodozza négy éj az időt;
És akkor a hold, mint az égre újan
Felvont ezüst ív, fogja nézni dús
Menyegzőnk éjjelét.
THESEUS
Go, Philostrate,
Stir up the Athenian youth to merriments;
Awake the pert and nimble spirit of mirth;
Turn melancholy forth to funerals—
The pale companion is not for our pomp. —
Exit PHILOSTRATE.
Hippolyta, I woo'd thee with my sword,
And won thy love doing thee injuries;
But I will wed thee in another key,
With pomp, with triumph, and with revelling.
Enter EGEUS, HERMIA, LYSANDER, and DEMETRIUS.
THESEUS
Eredj, Philostrat,
Serkentsd örömre Athén ifjait;
Ébreszd föl a kedv játszi szellemét
A méla bút űzd a halotti házhoz,
Sápadt alakja nem közénk való.
Philostrat el
Kard volt ugyan kérőm, Hippolyta,
Bántalmakon vevém szerelmedet;
De a menyegző más hangból megyen
Az fény, az ünnep, az vigság legyen.
Egéus, Hermia, Lysander és Demetrius jőnek
EGEUS
Happy be Theseus, our renowned duke!
EGÉUS
Üdv és szerencse, nagyhirű vezér!
THESEUS
Thanks, good Egeus: what's the news with thee?
THESEUS
Üdv, jó Egéus; nos mi jót hozasz?
EGEUS
Full of vexation come I, with complaint Against my child, my daughter Hermia.— Stand forth, Demetrius.—My noble lord, This man hath my consent to marry her: — Stand forth, Lysander; —and, my gracious duke, This man hath bewitch'd the bosom of my child. Thou, thou, Lysander, thou hast given her rhymes, And interchang'd love-tokens with my child Thou hast by moonlight at her window sung, With feigning voice, verses of feigning love; And stol'n the impression of her fantasy With bracelets of thy hair, rings, gawds, conceits, Knacks, trifles, nosegays, sweetmeats, —messengers Of strong prevailment in unharden'd youth; — With cunning hast thou filch'd my daughter's heart; Turned her obedience, which is due to me, To stubborn harshness.—And, my gracious duke, Be it so she will not here before your grace Consent to marry with Demetrius, I beg the ancient privilege of Athens, — As she is mine I may dispose of her Which shall be either to this gentleman Or to her death; according to our law Immediately provided in that case.
EGÉUS
Panasszal és bosszúsággal teli Jövök leányom, Hermiám iránt. - Demetrius, állj elő.—Kegyelmes úr, Ez az, kinek nejűl igértem őt. Lysander, állj elő: s ez itt, uram, Ez bűvölé meg gyermekem szivét Te, te Lysander, adtál néki verset, S váltál szerelmi zálogot vele Te zöngted a holdfénynél ablakán Álhangon álszerelmed énekit; Bokréta, hajlánc, gyűrü, pipere, Nyalánkság és tanult fogásid által (Mi balga lyánynak mind nyomós követ), Képzelme mássát te orroztad el; Csellel csenéd ki gyermekem szivét, S tetted fanyar-dacossá ellenem Az engedelmest.—Én tehát, uram, Kegyelmes úr, ha itt, fejedelmi színed Előtt se vállalná Demetriust Athéne ős jogán követelem, Hogy mint enyémmel bánhassak vele, S vagy e derék ifjúnak adjam őt, Vagy a halálnak, mit törvényeink Rögtön fejére szabnak íly esetben.
THESEUS
What say you, Hermia? be advis'd, fair maid
To you your father should be as a god;
One that compos'd your beauties: yea, and one
To whom you are but as a form in wax,
By him imprinted, and within his power
To leave the figure, or disfigure it.
Demetrius is a worthy gentleman.
THESEUS
És Hermia? Fogadj szót, szép leány.
Nézd úgy atyádat, mint istent, kitől
Eredtek összes bájaid; igen,
Kinek viasznyomása vagy te csak,
És akitől függ, épen hagyni a
Nyomott ábrát, vagy eltörölni azt.
Demetrius jeles, derék fiú.
HERMIA
So is Lysander.
HERMIA
Lysander is.
THESEUS
In himself he is
But, in this kind, wanting your father's voice,
The other must be held the worthier.
THESEUS
Magában ő is az
De nem birván atyád igéretét,
A másikat kell tartanod jelesbnek.
HERMIA
I would my father look'd but with my eyes.
HERMIA
Ó, bár szememmel nézné őt atyám!
THESEUS
Rather your eyes must with his judgment look.
THESEUS
Jobb, hogy te nézd atyád eszével őt.
HERMIA
I do entreat your grace to pardon me.
I know not by what power I am made bold,
Nor how it may concern my modesty
In such a presence here to plead my thoughts
But I beseech your grace that I may know
The worst that may befall me in this case
If I refuse to wed Demetrius.
HERMIA
Kérem, bocsásson meg, fenséges úr.
Én nem tudom, mi tész ily vakmerővé,
Szemérmem is hogyan engedheti
Ily körben érzelmimről szólanom;
De kérem, hadd tudjam, kegyelmes úr,
Mi az, mi érhet, legrosszabb, ha én
Demetriushoz nőül nem megyek.
THESEUS
Either to die the death, or to abjure
For ever the society of men.
Therefore, fair Hermia, question your desires,
Know of your youth, examine well your blood,
Whether, if you yield not to your father's choice,
You can endure the livery of a nun;
For aye to be shady cloister mew'd,
To live a barren sister all your life,
Chanting faint hymns to the cold, fruitless moon.
Thrice-blessed they that master so their blood
To undergo such maiden pilgrimage
But earthlier happy is the rose distill'd
Than that which, withering on the virgin thorn,
Grows, lives, and dies, in single blessedness.
THESEUS
Halállal halni meg, vagy mindörökre
Száműzni férfi-körből tenmagad.
Vess hát sziveddel számot, Hermia,
Vizsgáld meg ifju pezsgő véredet
Lesz-é erőd, ha most szót nem fogadsz,
Viselni vesztaszűzek öltönyét,
Sötét zárdába csukva, holtodig
Sivár apáca lenni s elhaló
Himnuszt rebegni meddő holdvilágon.
Háromszor áldott, ki vérét leküzdve
E szűzi pályát híven futja meg;
Hanem letörve mégis boldogabb
A rózsa, mint ha szűz tövissein
Áldott magányban nő, él és hal el.
HERMIA
So will I grow, so live, so die, my lord,
Ere I will yield my virgin patent up
Unto his lordship, whose unwished yoke
My soul consents not to give sovereignty.
HERMIA
Úgy nőjek, éljek, haljak én, uram,
Mintsem lemondjak szűzi szép jogomról
E férfiért, kinek gyülölt igáját
Szivem hódolva el nem ösmeri.
THESEUS
Take time to pause; and by the next new moon, —
The sealing-day betwixt my love and me
For everlasting bond of fellowship, —
Upon that day either prepare to die
For disobedience to your father's will;
Or else to wed Demetrius, as he would;
Or on Diana's altar to protest
For aye austerity and single life.
THESEUS
Időt adok még a megfontolásra
S majd a jövő újholdkor—az napon,
Mely szép arámmal engem összefűz
Örök frigy által—vagy halálra készülj
Mint engedetlen ősz atyád iránt,
Vagy hogy Demetriusnak nője léssz;
Vagy a Diána oltárán örökre
Sivár, magános életet fogadni.
DEMETRIUS
Relent, sweet Hermia; —and, Lysander, yield
Thy crazed title to my certain right.
DEMETRIUS
Hajolj, szép Hermia; s te is, Lysander,
Add fel jogomnak áligényedet.
LYSANDER
You have her father's love, Demetrius;
Let me have Hermia's: do you marry him.
LYSANDER
Birod, Demetrius, atyja szerelmét;
Hagyd nékem a leányét; vedd el apját.
EGEUS
Scornful Lysander! true, he hath my love;
And what is mine my love shall render him;
And she is mine; and all my right of
