The novella is set in a small country town surrounded by farms. It follows one eventful year in the life of a family of three girls, Paula, aged 9, Hanna, aged 8, Rose, aged 6 and their little brother. The story is told through the eyes of Hanna, the middle child. She is a daring child, whose love for adventure sometimes lands her in trouble. Suddenly, the family is faced with tragedy which throws them even closer together. The family copes with this tragedy with the support of the childrens favourite aunt their neighbours and the community.
The book gives a rare insight into the lives of children in a rural community.

Christina Carr was born and raised in South Africa. Before embarking on her writing career Christina graduated as a nurse in 1991 and worked in Pretoria until 2001, when she moved to Dublin, Ireland. As her father was a miner, the family moved home a lot. This enabled Christina adapt to different environments and developed her desire for discovery and exploration. She has always loved reading and started writing at a very young age. The desire to write stayed with her and while working as a nurse in Dublin she started writing again and produced her first book.

    Horses!" screamed Billy excitedly, as he pointed to the neighbour’s house, where two horses and a cart were tied to a railing. His elated voice interrupted Hanna’s conversation with Paula, Sylvia and Judy, their cousins. They looked amused as he ran towards them. Their mother and Rose followed, having just finished shopping.

    They are beautiful, exclaimed Hanna, as she walked in their direction, full of curiosity.

    Be careful, called her mother, trying to catch up with them.

    The horses were hooked to their cart.

    Now . . . don’t disturb them, advised Mum as she approached. All of them admired the horses before Mum made her way to the house.

    Your dinner will be ready soon, she reminded them, before entering the house.

    They were the most beautiful horses that Hanna had ever seen. They must have been from the farm, because she had never seen any horses in their little village, Koegas.

    Both horses were brown and one had a white spot between his eyes, just like a star.

    How cute they are, whispered Hanna.

    She reached out to touch the one with the white spot between his eyes while admiring his coat.

    She jumped as he suddenly neighed and lifted
