    Hannah had freckles, lots of them, splayed across the bridge of her nose, dusting her cheeks, and sprinkled down her arms and legs like tiny brown pin pricks. She HATED them.

    You’re being ridiculous; they’re adorable, said her mother, but Hannah would just roll her eyes and pretend to stick her index finger down her throat like she wanted to throw up.

    She wanted to be as perfect as her sixth grade classmate, Jenny Rose, who was tall, thin, blonde and freckleless.

    Hannah had a round belly and thighs as thick as the stump of the evergreen tree outside her window. Her dad claimed that she was pleasantly plump which Hannah felt more aptly described a turkey than a young girl.

    Hannah’s hair was red and curly like the Scottish heroine in a Disney film but hers was more frizzy than curly and fanned out as if she had stuck a finger in a socket. When she tried to tame her mane with a headband it made
