    CHAPTER ONE

    It was a grey October morning.The dark clouds covered the sun in an ominous shadow, and the air was on the crisp side. He sat motionless on his perch in the pine tree. He had been there for almost three hours, not daring to move a muscle, so as not to scare his prey away. He watched through squinting eyes as the object of his rapt attention loomed nearer. Only a few more yards and his goal would be in range. He took a deep breath and slowly exhaled, in order to stay calm, and to deliver an accurate shot. His hand closed around the stock of his rifle, a gift from his father on his eighth birthday. He squeezed the trigger gently. The rifle recoiled with a jolt into his shoulder.

    KEERACCCK !

    The sound of the rifle shot shattered the silence with a deafening roar. His prey took several steps and then came crashing to the ground, shot through the heart. It was a difficult shot for one so young, but he had been shooting for a couple of years and had become proficient at it. He climbed down to the ground, stretched his limbs to get the blood flowing again. He walked rapidly towards the motionless figure on the ground. Dried twigs snapped and crackled beneath his feet. His heart was racing and he moved faster, for this was his first big kill. He made a concerted effort to slow himself down with deep breaths. He tried to get his emotions under control.

    Nice shot, Jim!his father said, as he patted his son on the shoulders. Your mother will be proud of you, son.

    His father stood a shade under six feet tall, with brown, curly, shoulder length hair and a full beard. He had a medium build, but,was very powerful. He could be riled up, and was very slow to anger.

    Jim arched his back and puffed out his chest, and stretched his body to his full height. He had done what his father had taught him : stayed down wind, kept still until his target was in range, breathed easily and squeezed the trigger firmly and gently. He had every reason to be proud. He was ten years old and had shot his first buck. The deer was taller than Jim and weighed about three hundred pounds and had a seven point rack. This would help feed them this winter, when game became scarcer. He stood there as his father, Adam, began to skin and cut the meat into strips. They would have to pack it up in order to bring it back to their lodgings.

    Jim, we best be cleaning this here prize of yours. We want to get back home, as we have been gone away for four weeks.His father's voice brought Jim out of his trance. We are finished hunting for now, and your mother and little Peter will be awful glad to see us.

    Jim started to help his father with the skinning of the buck, cuttiing up the meat and packing it. They wanted to get on their journey home. They were about a week's horseback ride away, and with all the meat and hides they had accumulated on the trip, it would make the trip take longer. Samantha's birthday was a week way and Adam wanted to be there for her.

    Samantha, Jim's mother was a short woman standing five feet three inches tall. She had a medium build with reddish brown hair and was of Irish ancestry. Peter, his brother, was only five years old and had his mother's temperment. He had wanted to go with his father. He was too young for such a task and had to remain at home with his mother.

    Adam and Jim completed their work and were settling down for the night, as they wanted to be off early the next morning. As Jim lay down on his blanket and covered himself with another blanket, his thoughts turned to his mother. He couldn't wait to tell her all about his great adventure. Jim was so excited that he thought he would never fall asleep. However, nature has a way of helping out and his fatigue soon caused him to drift off to sleep. Adam laid down near Jim, and covered up. He was anxious for the night to be over, so they could be on their way. He slept. In the middle of the night, he started to toss and turn. Suddenly he awoke in a sweat. He had a bad dream, more like an evil omen. He had an awful feeling in his gut that something was dreadfully wrong. He looked around the camp, but everything was quiet. The rest of the night his sleep was restless, as he could not shake the feeling that something evil was going to happen. He tossed for most of the night, before finally falling asleep.

    * * * *

    Samantha awoke early that morning. as she did every morning. She made breakfast for Peter and herself. She wondered what Adam and Jim were doing at that exact moment. She figured that they would be getting up, so as to have an early start on their trip home. It was only a week until her birthday and she knew Adam would want to be there for her. He had made a point of always being there over the last ten years, since they were married. She woke Peter up and helped him wash and dress. They sat down at the table and ate their breakfast. She had scrambled some eggs and made biscuit with gravy. She poured herself and Peter a glass of milk. They soon finished their meal and she cleaned the dishes, while Peter played with his toys. The cabin stood in a clearing at the base of the hills, and was made of logs and was approximately sixteen feet by sixteen feet. Adam had built an addition on the back that measured eight feet by eight feet. This added space was used by the boys as their sleeping quarters. The floor was made of wooden planks and had a cellar dug underneath the floor to store their extra food and canned goods. There were windows on both sides of the cabin. They had shutters on them with loopholes, in case of an attack by hostiles, they could fire out through the holes. There was a curtain hung across the far side which was used as their bedroom space. They had a table and chairs in the middle of the room. Off to one side was a large oak cabinet where they stored their dishes and pots and pans. Opposite the bedroom was the fireplace used for both cooking and heating. Sam put on her coat and Peter trailed behind her, as they left to go to the barn. She had to milk the cow, feed the chickens, and collect the eggs. The barn was also made out of logs. She let the cow, Betsy, out of the barn and into the pasture.The barn contained four stalls, one for the cow and the other three for the horses that were with Adam. The corral was next to the barn. It encompassed a small area. There was a feeding trough in which she placed several pitch forks of straw. Down at the far end of the corral a stream ran , so she did not have to carry any water up for the animals. She next shoveled out the manure from the stalls and placed it outside the barn. She grabbed a bucket of feed and scattered it about the yard for the chickens. There were about a dozen of them. After feeding the hens she proceeded into the coop to gather up any eggs she could find. Today she amasssed a total of nine eggs, which was a good haul. Peter busied himself by chasing the chickens. He soon tired of this and followed his mother to the small garden, behind and adjacent to the barn. She managed to find some potatoes and a few melons and gourds. The other vegetables were all done for the season. She had preserved them for the winterand stored them in the cellar.

    It was nearing noon time, and they started back to the cabin to put the goods away, and make lunch. As they rounded the barn, and were half way to the cabin, they came face to face with two grubby looking men. They were very dirty looking and wore buffalo hides over their shoulders. She figured they were hunters or mountain men of sorts. They were between her and the cabin. The oldest looking one opened his mouth to greet her, and she noticed his teeth were yellow and rotten. Something made the hair on the back of her neck stand up on edge.She was nervous. She sensed trouble. The two men kept checking out the place sizing up the situation. With one arm full of produce and eggs, she took Peter's hand with her other hand and attempted to skirt the two men. She thought to herself that she must get into the cabin and lock the door behind her in order to be safe. As she reached the door and was about to enter, the door suddenly swung open. There blocking her path was another man. She was frantic and asked him to step aside. He took a step back, and as he did, the other two men pushed Samantha and Peter inside. She was in a bad predicament and was now trapped in her own cabin with these men. She had no idea what to expect next. The oldest one, who appeared to be the leader, ordered her to make them something to eat. Peter was shoved into the back room and he stood there staring, too afraid to move.Sam hung her coat up and started to prepare a meal. She cooked, all the time nervously watching them. She kept thinking, how can we get out of this bad situation. Two of the men sat at the the table. The third took a chair and parked himself so as to be blocking the front door. The men wolved their food down and were washing it down with whiskey that they had brought.The leader asked her, where her husband was. She lied telling him that he was out back in the woods hunting. He would be home anytime now. They snickered and said that they had been watching her place for a day, and knew that no man was around. Sam's heart leapt into her throat. She knew that they were up to no good.

    The oldest man grabbed her by the arm and dragged her away from Peter. She struggled to free herself, but was no match for his strength. He pushed her down unto her bed and sat astride of her, so she could not get away. Grabbing both of her wrists, he pushed them to the side and attempted to kiss her. She turned her head from side to side in an effort to avoid his mouth. The second man then took a hold of her wrists, while the first man clasped her face and held it firmly. He put his mouth over her mouth and kissed her. She could smell the putrid odor of rotten teeth and whiskey. It was enough to make her gag. She screamed and tried to struggle in order to push him off her. She did not have the strength needed for such a task. He then took a hold of her dress at the neckline and ripped it apart exposing her breasts. He proceeeded to tear her dress from top to bottom leaving her body completely exposed. With both of his grimey hands he started to fondle her pink colored breasts and play with the brown nipples. He opened his trousers and took his member out. He spread hers legs apart forcibly and plunged his bulging member deep into her. He thrust repeatedly in and out. After a short time he had satisfied his animal lust. He was done with her and she wept bitterly. But her ordeal was not over. The others took their turns violating her.

    The leader reached for his whiskey bottle and took another huge swallow. Sam was in hysterics. She decided this would be her best chance to escape. She got off the bed and raced across the room to the fireplace, where she picked up the poker in both hands. She wheeled around as the second man came towards her. She struck a blow that hit him on the side of the head. The blow staggered him and his knees started to buckle. She raised the weapon and struck another blow to his head. The force of the blow made him slump to the floor, blood gushing from the wound. She raised the iron poker a third time to strike another blow. The man guarding the door had crossed the room and grabbed her arm and spun her towards himself. He had his gun in his opposite hand and smashed her in the face. The blow was vicious and Sam fell backwards. As she tumbled down, she hit her head on the side of the fireplace. The force of the fall snapped her head forward and she fell in a heap on the floor. Blood oozed out of her ear and a red stain appeared on the back of her head. Her life force was ebbing away. She would not have to endure the humilation and torture much longer. Soon she took her last breath.

    The men stood over her and one bent down to shake her. There was no response.The leader said, "she's dead. Let's check the place for valuables and get out of here.The men ransacked the cabin, overturning the table and chairs, They rifled through the cabinet, throwing everything all over the room. Meanwhile, Peter who was standing in the doorway to his room, bent down and picked up the locket off the floor. Apparently the chain had been broken during the struggle, and had flown across the
