Robert J. Rance

Robert J. Rance was born and raised in New York City and worked in advertising and marketing with Hearst Corporation. By day he was dapper executive; by night he was an avid surf fisherman whose record setting striped bass catch placed him among the "Legends of the High Hill Striper Club". His effort to preserve the striped bass from extinction as well as to safeguard the public from the contaminates within the fish occupied almost two decades of his life.

    Dedication

This book is dedicated to Eileen, my loving wife of 55 years. While successfully raising our four children, she found the time to contribute in countless ways to the SOS project. Often Eileen worked well into the night preparing bulletins, press releases, and letters that were important to our campaign. Without her sacrifices throughout the sixteen years of our endeavor, we might not have been successful.

What began with a handful of members eventually became an organization composed of individual and club memberships which, at the height of our campaign, numbered an estimated 87,000 strong. SOS became a force to be reckoned with.

In 1984, fifteen years after our efforts to set a new minimum possession size of
