Prologue
Paranoia concerning eradication of life on earth, and the fall of the United States to a foreign power has been around since the dropping of the atom bombs in 1945. This fear was felt all across the land, but with the attack on New York and the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Things seemed to intensify. Things seemed to get totally out of control and no matter what was done, matters worsened. Not only did the President have to worry about the anthrax epidemic, which was out of control and the American people were dropping like flies. He also had to worry about China, and the militias spread out in America. China was doing her best to oust the United States from being the lead nation, and wanted nothing but total disarray in our land. With all this, it would seem that all is lost for this great nation. People do not realize that this country was based on everyone having different beliefs, and that freedom of having these different beliefs is what made our country as great as she is. Not only that, but also the common family, who nobody would put any stock in, is also the diamond in the rough. This family and many families just like them make up this Country, they and their beliefs are what guides this country to greatness. So let the people, who wish to tread on her, beware. These families and their diverse ideas will triumph.
Unbelievable
Our summit with China’s leaders has ended with no progress made and this is trouble we don’t need, especially now with America under siege. I shall come back on the air day after tomorrow, January 16, to let you know of anything new or if there is anything else that can be done. Now for the last news, I hope my message shall reach out, and will find us all coming together to help and understand these actions are necessary. All of us need to get a handle on these times, and realize this is not meant to make us lose anymore of our freedom. As soon as we are able to, we will go back to our normal lifestyle, but as of today we are going to have a nation wide curfew."
All of a sudden a major commotion broke out in the back ground as two shots were fired. A reporter in the front row fell to the floor, struck in the side by the snipers bullet. A Secret Service agent yelled, cover the President, get the shooter, and stay down Mr. President. People were diving for any cover they could find.
Good Lord Mike, this is not looking good at all.
Mike and all of the rest of our families were too speechless to answer.
Three Secret Service agents were grappling with the gunman and finally had him under control as an agent grabbed the gun out of the gunman’s hand. The assassin yelled out, "We will fight to the death, before we will ever allow this police state to take over.
"Mr. President, are you all right?
Yes, yes I’m fine, get him out of here. Please get the medics in here for this gentleman and let me know his condition as soon as you receive it. As I wa-wa-was saying, the President obviously under a great deal of duress, stammered this is not pleasant for me or for any of you, and I hope and pray this is the last of these outbreaks. What we need now is your help and understanding. Time has come to show the world our strength, and that we can come together as a nation in yet another crisis. We’ll come out, not only on top, but we show the world we can handle anything that comes our way. We’re a united people and shall remain standing.
Chapter 1
January 14, 2005 Day 1
Damn! Don was thinking it would be nice to sleep in just one day a week, but no, my eyes pop open at exactly six every morning. As Don slowly accepted his fate, he turned over and looked at his wife. In a few moments, she would wake up and all the fear and worry would be right back. Don wondered how things could change so drastically, in such a short time. He would give anything he could to ease Sophia’s mind. As he lay watching her, his mind drifted off thinking about the day Sophia and Don had put a plan of action together. You know a plan of action, so if our world was coming to an end we needed to be sure we would survive.
Honey, we need to sit and discuss everything that is going on. All of the events going on in the world have me concerned. Our way of life is in jeopardy.
Yes Sophia, Let’s talk. We can make a pot of coffee, and put our minds together.
So with two cups of coffee, they sat down at the kitchen table. Don asked Sophia to begin.
Don, our world is starting to fall apart. With all that has been done, our freedom, and our lives are at stake. We need to do something. Look at the fate that awaits our children as they go out on their own.
Feeling a little depressed Don replied, Yes sweetheart, these concerns have been on my mind even before all this began. First, we had the problems of global terrorism. Then there were problems with all of the Middle East countries at one time or another. We had the war with Iraq, and then the attack on New York and Washington it self. We took care of the Taliban, and Osama Bin Laden. If that had not been enough, we had another war with Iraq, and got rid of that tyrant Saddam Hussein. Then, the anthrax virus, and the virus is still infecting and killing our people today. It has killed nearly 20 million people so far. Sophia a plan of action is needed now!
What did you have in mind Don?
Jumping up, Don made a beeline to the bedroom. He moved three boxes of clothes and two pair of boots then he picked up a box in the corner of the closet. Don was excited he had wanted to speak to Sophia about this for a while. The time had to be just right and now finally it had arrived. He knew just what to say now. Funny, how all this time he couldn’t find the words, and now bang knew exactly what to say. Coming back out, Don opened the box and pulled out an atlas, a list of items, and a list of jobs. Don started explaining that each member of our family would have to be responsible for different jobs, and would have to make certain they brought specific items to help insure their survival. When Don took a breath, he looked at Sophia, her mouth was agape and she had an astonished look on her face.
You have been doing a little more than just thinking about this haven’t you?
Yes Sophia, opening the atlas Don said,
There is a time coming when we will not be safe in our own home. Since childhood there has been one place and only one that will keep us safe. That place is here in Assyria, MI."
Where is Assyria Don?
Assyria is the place where we go to hunt mushrooms in the spring. You know right at the end of wolf road.
Yes of course, but why there, it’s just another forest in southern Michigan?
Growing up we lived on Jenkins road, just off the corner of wolf road in Assyria. My dog Sandy and I used to roam through the woods and the swamp there. One day, we somehow managed to get lost. No doubt Sandy knew where we were, but I had no idea. Wandering around we came to this great big area surrounded by thorns and pricker bushes. It looked like nothing could get through that mass of flesh-tearing bushes. Then, I saw deer tracks going in under the brush. I remembered that in order to get away from hunters and to get in areas people couldn’t deer would crawl. This I have seen with my very own eyes and it is one reason hunting is not for me anymore. Anything that smart and that beautiful doesn’t need to have more hardships placed upon them. Being young and full of adventure, I crawled in, and it was fifty yards or more before a person could stand upright again. When I finally did stand, there was a beautiful island right in the middle of a natural moat. We started wading and the water got deeper and deeper. I started thinking we had really screwed up, just then it started getting shallower. The minute I could see beyond the line of trees on the edge of the moat, I almost forgot about the mud and gunk I just waded through. It was beautiful and about 50 yards long and 50 yards wide. There was grass and it was more of a field than anything else. It had a few trees, with a big area in the middle where all the deer were coming to bed down. Over the years I have kept my eyes on the place. Something in me said, some day this place was to be my sanctuary. It was just a feeling I had, but this part of the world just seemed to hold a special meaning to me.
Why haven’t you mentioned this before Don,
she asked.
What honey? The special place or my fear of what the world is becoming.
Both Don, this is like a part of you I never knew existed.
Sophia, it was never mentioned for several reasons; one is the word paranoid is something I didn’t want to be associated with. Two, if the place was mentioned, then there was a chance it could have been repeated in passing. Unless, it was mentioned to you why I didn’t want it talked about, then you have the word paranoid springing up again. You know a kind of catch 22, so I was screwed if I did and if screwed if I didn’t? The feeling was so strong I didn’t want to take a chance of anybody finding out about it. That way if we ever needed it, we would be secure except for an unlucky chance and given its location that would be unlikely. When you see it you will understand what I mean.
OK Don, if you believe in it then I will also. Don, you need to know as long as I have you and our two children, my life is complete, no matter where we have to live. We’ll always find a way to survive.
Both of them talked it over for a while, and decided the plan was a good one. Both Don and Sophia hoped it would never have to be implemented.
When my mind snapped out of the trance Sophia was looking at me.
I would give you a penny for your thoughts Don, but it sure looked like a dollars worth.
Chuckling Don asked, Good morning, sweetheart, how do you feel?
I’m fine, Don, I’ll go make some coffee, would you like something to eat?
No thanks, it‘s a bit early for breakfast.
Getting up, and going to the front porch for the newspaper, Don sat down to read. He hoped there would be better news today. Don looked at the headlines and read President Randall was to address the nation today at 1:00 p.m.
I wonder what the President will go on about today, he is supposed to talk today at one?
Who knows, Don?
He went on reading the sub-titles, Civil unrest spreads throughout the country, Anthrax: The Problem that just won’t go away, Militant groups in U.S. vows never to allow a police state in America, China and the U.S. differ on policies ranging from human right issues to Nato’s decision to keep the United States as the lead nation rather than China. I really don’t know why we even look at the newspaper,
Don said. It gets more depressing every day. Sophia, what do we have planned for the weekend?
Well, later today, we are having a cookout with my parents and tonight we are playing cards with your parents. Tomorrow is still up for grabs, handsome.
Well, maybe your parents will want to watch the address while we are at their house today.
Good morning all,
Michelle said, entering the room.
Michelle kissed Don and Sophia on the cheek.
Hi, honey,
Don replied. Are you going with us to your Grandparents house?
Yes, dad, I hope it is not as boring as last time.
Sophia told Michelle You can‘t have exciting times every second honey. There are certain times we have to let loved ones know we care so I expect you to be on your best behavior today.
Yes, mother, I will be.
Don asked. Is your brother still sleeping?
Yeah right, like you really expect Jay to be up at 7:00.
Laughing, I replied, OK, twit, I get the point.
Chapter 2
Hello, Michael and Barb how are both of you today?
Don asked as Mike opened the door. I shook Mike’s hand, and so did Jay as Barb gave her daughter and Michelle a hug. Did you read in the paper today that the President is going to speak at 1:00 this afternoon?
We are fine, thanks, and yes we did. Barb and I were hoping we could all watch it together.
Sophia said, We were hoping the same thing.
Barb told us we would be eating about 2:30, after the President gave his speech.
Well, I hope we can all be included in this,
Frank declared as he walked into the room.
Surprised to see him Sophia quickly gave him a hug and we
