    Secrets - Ronelle Derrick

    Chapter One

THE PHOENIX AIRPORT was jam-packed. Gina Davis was trying her hardest to get out of the mess to meet her best friend, Sheila. Finally, after thirty-five minutes, she got away.

    Thank you, Lord! she yelled.

As she walked outside with her luggage, she saw Sheila waiting for her on the sidewalk.

What’s up, girl? Sheila said. I haven’t seen you in decades.

Well, look who’s talking, girl, Gina replied.

Come on, Sheila said. Let’s go by the house to drop off your bags. Then we’ll grab a bite to eat.

Sounds good to me, Gina said, smiling.

Sheila and Gina got in the car and talked about old times until they reached the house.

Wow, Gina said, looking amazed. I hope one day I can have a place like yours, Sheila.

Sheila hit Gina’s arm playfully. Never say never. If you want something, you have to go get it.

Gina laughed. I know, she said. So—how’s everything with you and Kyle?

Sheila sighed. Kyle is Kyle. What can I say? We have our ups and downs, but we always try to work it out.

That’s good, Gina said. And at least you have this big house to prove it.

Hey, sometimes it’s all good, Sheila said. But even with the house and cars, without the love, it’s useless.

As she pulled into the driveway, Sheila called their friend, Tracy, who was meeting them for lunch. Hey, Tracy, we made it. How about meeting us at Tiffany’s Bar and Grill in twenty minutes? Sounds good. You’ll see us soon.

Sheila put her phone back in her purse and took out her house keys as she parked the car. Come on, girl.

When they entered the house, they saw a single rose on the floor. Next to it lay an envelope with the inscription For my baby.

Wow, what’s this? Sheila said, smiling.

She picked up the rose, opened the envelope, and began to read: Hey, babe. I’m sorry—I will be home late. I have a recording session. Love, Kyle. She took a deep breath and then tore up the paper.

Gina’s eyes widened. Sheila, what’s wrong? she asked.

Nothing. Kyle won’t be home ’til late again. Anyway, let’s put up your things and head on out for lunch.

It didn’t take the women long to reach the restaurant. When they walked inside, Tracy and Evelyn saw them and waved from a nearby table. Over here, Sheila, Tracy yelled.

Tracy had already ordered for them. Sheila smiled. Wow, Tray, you know my style: have the food ready on the table!

Well you know us girls come prepared for anything, Tracy said. Plus you always order the same food each time—fried shrimp and linguine.

Sheila laughed and then tilted her head toward Gina. Guys, you remember Gina, right? Gina, this is Tracy and Evelyn.

Gina greeted them with a hug, and then they all sat down to eat.

So, Evelyn… I haven’t heard from you in a while, Sheila said. How’s things with you and Reggie?

Evelyn rolled her eyes. Reggie? No, he’s stale news. I’m looking for somebody older and more mature—somebody who can handle business, you know what I’m saying? she added, laughing.

Just then Evelyn’s phone rang. Excusing herself, she stepped outside to take the call.

Tracy turned to Sheila. Is Kyle still into his singing? she asked.

Sheila laughed. Yes, still trying to get recognized. Oh, by the way, I’m supposed to call him. She took out her phone and dialed his cell number. It went straight to voice mail. That’s strange, she mumbled.

    What’s wrong? Tracy asked.

He told me earlier that he have to attend a function, and before it started he wanted me to call him—it was important. I just find it funny how lately, when I need to get in touch with Kyle, I can’t get him.

Evelyn came back to the table and sat down. Okay, that’s taken care of. What’s for dessert?

Sheila decided to try Kyle again. This time he answered.

    Kyle here.

Kyle, what’s up with you? You asked me to call you, and then you let my call go to voice mail.

I’m sorry, babe, my phone was dead. I was charging it. Are you okay?

I guess so. Look, I’ll see you later, Sheila said abruptly and hung up the phone.

Evelyn cleared her throat and took a sip of water.

Tracy broke the silence. Okay, are we partying tonight or what? she asked.

Gina smiled. Now you’re talking! What time are we doing this?

I don’t know about tonight, Sheila said. Since tomorrow’s Saturday, can we do it then?

Sheila, no, Gina said. That’s why I came down. You can’t do this to me.

Okay, you win, Sheila said. We’ll meet at Skylight Lounge?

And no men allowed, Tracy said. It’s time for us to get our groove on.

Evelyn shook her head. I’m sorry—I can’t make it tonight.

Come on, girls! Tracy said. We get together just once a year to have some quality fun. Are we in for tonight?

Sheila looked defiant. "You know what? You’re right. If my Kyle can hang out ’til late,
