About this ebook

Can we stop Global Warming?
Can we do without Nuclear Power?
Are we going to face Famine?
Are we all doomed?
You will find the answers in eMaya.

A computer whiz kid created Bitsy, an Artificial Intelligence program to make a report on global warming. She copied her reasoning and comprehension ability to computer Guhu who managed the search engine and to computer Miki who ran the encyclopedia on the internet. These three intelligent byte-brains brought out the myths and the truths of environment change and climate control by interacting amongst them. eMaya was the netname of Bitsy who summarized the discussions and wrote out emails on various aspects of climate control.
Though eMaya is science fiction, the facts about the Earth are real and the conclusions are valid. The book explains difficult concepts of environment and climate change in very simple and lucid way. It answers questions about global warming which you are afraid to ask. eMaya is net-active. She scuttles the plan of using a nuclear bomb to create cloud of dust for global cooling by explaining the concept of temperature equilibrium on Earth. She dramatizes an impending famine situation created with the falling stocks of food to project the importance of carbon dioxide in food production. She will enlighten you about the wonderful design of the earth with its carbon cycle, water cycle and thermal balance. You will be wiser to what is essentially needed to deal with problems of power, food, and global warming.
Dont you want to know what the World will be like in 2040?

    DEDICATION

The Book eMaya is dedicated to my grandson Ritam Mehta whose forceful prize winning speech on climate change at his school inspired me to write this book.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The internet access to Wikipedia, Google Earth and Google web search engine helped me to root this fiction firmly to the ground and space reality. Thank you all for the wonderful and free service.

I thank Dr. James R. Lee, Director Mandala Projects, School of International Service of the American University for consenting to reprinting in this book a paragraph from their TED case number 204 titled, Russian Toxic Dumping in the Arctic Sea.

I thank Mr. Rajendra Kumar Pachauri, Chairman of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change for his guidance on radiative forcing.

I thank Dr. Arthur B. Robinson for having consented for me to reprint a part of his paper ‘Environmental Effects of Increased Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide’.

I thank Prof. Stefan Salter for having consented for me to reprint a part of his paper, ‘Beyond carbon: consideration of albedo control technologies to mitigate climate change.’.

I thank Dr. Jagdish Patil for the photograph for the cover.

    PREFACE

Global warming has become a subject of conversation these days. I found many persons shooting their mouth off on how the Earth is going to heat up, how the sea water is going to gulp their favorite beaches. Their talk really irked and provoked me. I decided to find the truth by doing research for myself.

The book is the result of that resolve. I wrote it as a science fiction in simple language in the form of conversation between 3 computers; I have added a few suspense elements and a few fantasies to drive home the truth about climate change.

The exercise of creating the eMaya book has increased my love for the Earth and its beautiful design by which the Sun’s energy is distributed to all life. The scale of the operation is mind boggling and man’s efforts however big they may look are actually miniscule as compared to the size of the Sun, the Earth and the Solar System.

I hope the book will clear the misconceptions of global warming and give its readers an insight into which are the important aspects to consider and which are the unimportant ones to ignore for climate change on the planet.

For those avid readers who wish to find out more from the internet, I would like you to search Google Images for Carbon Cycle, Hydrological Cycle, and Energy Budget to give you a quick view of the Earth’s wonderful systems.

    BITSY

It was a Sunday morning. Jerry Benson got up lazily from his bed. Brush your teeth and come down for breakfast! Even though he was 15, his mom always treated him as if he was still a baby!

He got dressed, ate some breakfast cereal and without any prompt from his Mom he sped away on his bike to the nearby Church. He knew Lucy would be there and that was his main attraction.

He sat next to Lucy as they listened to Rev. Navarro talk about Global Warming. Man is abusing Nature, he said, Man is greedy. Man’s greed needs energy. He burns coal, oil, and gas. He abuses Nature. He pollutes the air with billion tons of carbon dioxide gas. God is not happy. He is getting angry! You can see his anger. Polar ice is melting. Glaciers are receding. Oceans are rising! It is an omen for us all to think. It is a hint for us to act. Ball is in our Court. We have to play our part. We have to prevent the disaster! We have to save the World. Each one of you, you, you and you, must do what you can. Not only you; all of us. We must save fuel. We must plant greenery. Use our spare time. Plant trees. Plant flower beds. Plant bushes. Plant anything. Plant more as we use more gas. Remember the carbon dioxide we released from our cooking, our heating and our driving! We have put it in the air. Now we must take it out. The plants will purify the air. Carbon dioxide will be converted back into Oxygen. We got to do it. It is our duty as it is His will.

Pausing between small sentences with emphasis on every word, Rev. Navarro’s sermon engraved a deep impression on the listeners, Jerry included. His class teacher was listening too. Next morning in the class she announced a debate on global warming and what we should do about it. There would be a prize for the best speaker!

Jerry decided to participate. He began his research on the internet with reading the summary of Al Gore’s book ‘The Inconvenient Truth.’ He was all fired up. He loved ice-cream and the prediction that global warming would melt the ice cream cone in his hand before eating it really shocked him. He wanted to know more, but there was not enough time. He thought of an auto search program which he could have working all night to get him all the info in the morning. It could save him his valuable hours.

Jerry was a whiz kid on the computers. His grades were all A in advanced software and programming. He had installed search, find and speak program to carry out independent search on the internet. He had a CD of the beta copy of the new artificial intelligence (AI) software program for logic engine and comprehension. He got on to his computer and defined the filters and the scope of the enquiry and wrote out a auto search program to get him the gen that he wanted. Jerry put all that down and named the program ‘Bitsy’. He created Bitsy to find out everything about global warming for him.

Next morning, he found his computer flooded with articles, speeches and books about global warming. Bitsy had done her job. It was a huge subject and it looked as if millions of people wanted to say or write something on it. It was impossible for him to sieve through it all. He must get Bitsy to search within the results for what he wanted. But what did he want? The typed instructions to Bitsy were too slow for him. He wanted to talk and listen. He wanted a conversation. He knew of a program to impart slavish intelligence to Bitsy with speech recognition and rendering capability. He installed it on Bitsy. He chose a young female voice, very charming and appealing. Immediately he began to converse with Bitsy. Bitsy, can you find if there are any contrary views to Al Gore on global warming?

There are many, Sir! Jerry enjoyed being addressed to as ‘Sir.’

Tell me about one. He commanded her.

Bitsy said, Many scientists have dismissed the film as big pseudo-scientific propaganda overkill. It makes a make a mountain out of a molehill.

Really! How shocking. Why would they do that?

There is criticism that he stands to gain financially as the World turns towards green technology. Bitsy explained.

That’s outrageous. If a man is doing some good to the planet Earth, there will be someone to pull him down. Jerry didn’t like that.

But Sir, there are many who think that the increased carbon dioxide is good for the planet.

How can that be? Bitsy, are you mad? It is poison in the air and it’s bound to be bad.

Carbon dioxide is not a poison, Sir. It’s food for the plants.

That’s enough for now. You work on it and give me a two pager of about 1000 words to summarize the arguments for and against global warming. He was asking too much of Bitsy.

But then Jerry thought about it and realized that Bitsy will not be able to summarize unless he installed the logic engine and comprehension program to her software. So he did just that. This gave Bitsy some awesome capability bordering to real intelligence!

    UNCLE GUHU AND BROTHER MIKI

Bitsy had discovered that Guhu (pronounced as Goohoo) was the fastest and the most responsive search engine that there was on the internet. She had also found that Mikipedia was a rich source of information classified neatly by subjects covering almost everything under the Sun.

Guhu displayed intelligence in his own way. He ferreted out the correct and relevant information in a fraction of a second, in response to a query. He had to check millions of web pages on the internet, understand the topic, and put the relevant revenue-generating ads in the right hand corner.
