Extraordinary Experiences - Richard B. Jones

    Chapter 1

The moon shone bright over the sandy beach. Ocean waves crashed into the nearby cliffs, shooting spray up into the still night. At the top of cliffs, a dark and cold settlement pierced the sky. Headstones and crypts dotted the remote and isolated landscape like the remains of a lost civilization. Sea gulls rested on the barren branches of the dead tree, watching for any type of movement inside the cemetery.

At the entrance to the cemetery, a red sports car screeched to a loud and abrupt halt. The young boy behind the wheel kicked open his door and turned to his passenger with a grin. Sara, we’re here. Let’s go look for some treasure.

Roger, she said with a whisper, I don’t think this is a good idea. Cemeteries are creepy, especially at night.

Roger held Sara’s hand and tried to ease her mind. We’ll be fine as long as we stick together. The caretaker won’t be back until the morning so we have the place to ourselves for the night.

Sara was still uncomfortable about going into the graveyard but decided to follow Roger in. Okay, Sara said with a brave face. Let’s go in.

Roger kissed Sara for a few moments and the two exited the car. Roger opened the trunk and pulled out two shovels, flashlights and a knapsack. Let’s go! exclaimed Roger.

The teenagers walked toward the entrance of the graveyard. Sara turned on the flashlight and shined the beam on the sign above the entry gate. The sign read Westport Cemetery.

Roger entered through the gate first and scanned the horizon for security guards. After a few moments, he motioned Sara inside and the two wandered aimlessly around.

Sara was amazed at the ornate headstones and crypts that lined the dirt paths. Many of the deceased that were buried here dated back to the 1850s. Roger told Sara about how Westport was a major maritime seaport between Los Angeles and San Francisco from the 1830s to the late 1890s. During storms and periods of dense fog, many ships sailed into the jagged rocks off the coast and were destroyed. The deceased were recovered and buried in the seaside cemetery located a few miles outside of Westport.

After a few minutes, Sara became inquisitive as to why they were at the cemetery. I found a book in the library that talked about Captain William Stout, explained Roger. "According to the book, Captain Stout discovered several large nuggets of gold near Hangtown during the Gold Rush. Each nugget was said to have weighed at least 20 pounds each. He loaded the golden nuggets onto his ship, the Blarney, and sailed from San Francisco down to Los Angeles."

Sara listened with interest to the rest of the story. "Captain Stout was off the coast of Westport when he sailed into a storm. The waves pushed the ship further and further towards the coast until the Blarney was obliterated on the rocks."

Roger found another path and started to head down to another section of the cemetery. Sara anxiously followed and was curious about the golden nuggets. So what happened to the gold?

Roger discovered a concrete bench and decided to finish the rest of the story while resting. "Nobody knows for sure. It is believed that Captain Stout told one of the townspeople about the gold just before he died. Many people believe that the gold went down with the Blarney. Over the years, treasure hunters have gone into the ocean in search of the wreckage of the Blarney in hopes of locating the gold, only to discover that there is nothing but piles of broken wood."

Sara stood up and started walking around the bench. Let me get this straight, she started with a perplexed look on her face, people have looked for this treasure out at the wreckage site for years only to discover that there is no gold out there.

Roger shook his head in agreement. That is correct.

Well, if that is correct, what in the world are we doing here? asked Sara.

I believe that no one was able to find the treasure in the ocean because it was never there in the first place.

If the treasure is not there, then where is it?

Roger smiled with excitement. Sara, I believe the gold was buried with Captain Stout. All we need to do is locate his grave and then start digging.

The young woman noticed a large headstone next to the concrete bench and bent down to read the inscription. Sara gasped with surprise when she deciphered the name. Roger, you had better take a look at this.

Roger walked over toward Sara and crouched down next to her. The name on the headstone rolled off his tongue with ease. "William Stout, Captain of the Blarney."

The two stood up and Roger hugged Sara with delight. You found his gravesite! Now we can start digging and once we locate his coffin, I’m positive that the treasure will be inside.

Before they could start digging, the sound of a metal gate closing echoed in the distance. Roger and Sara turned around and noticed an unusual sight. Down a small hill past the large oak tree stood a large crypt. A flickering light emanated from inside the dark structure.

Let’s go check it out, inquired Roger.

Sara stood still and whispered to Roger in a scared tone, I think we should leave before something happens to us.

Before Sara knew it, Roger grabbed her hand and led her to the crypt. As they walked closer to the entrance, the granite building grew in size. Once they reached the gate, they realized that the crypt was almost twenty feet in height. The family name above the gate read RILEY and was protected by two protruding gargoyles. Roger peered inside and noticed that the light was coming from another room inside the crypt. He opened the gate and the pair entered the dark and foreboding structure.

Sara became uneasy as they trekked down a small corridor towards the light. Roger, I don’t want to go any further. Let’s just get back to the car and leave.

Before Roger could respond, they entered a large room that was aglow with candles. The walls were adorned with several large paintings that seemed out of place in a crypt.

As they walked around, Roger and Sara noticed a coffin sitting in the middle of the room with a chair next to it. They walked towards the object and began examining the unusual carvings on the coffin.

A small breeze swept through the room and extinguished several of the candles. Sara started to head for the corridor in fright. I’m leaving, Roger.

Before she exited the room, Sara turned around and screamed in horror as she watched Roger thrown headfirst into one of the walls. Roger’s neck snapped upon impact and his lifeless body was assaulted by a cloaked figure.

Sara ran out of the crypt in fright and darted up the hill towards the main entrance of the cemetery. She was only a few feet away from the gate when the cloaked figure landed in her path. Sara noticed the blood red eyes of the beast and belted out a scream of terror. Her fright lasted only a moment before the beast plunged his fangs into her neck and sucked the blood out of her body.

    Chapter 2

The dark blue SUV raced around the sharp turns of the curvy road. Miguel Garcia stared at the winding road ahead, focused on leaving his life in Los Angeles behind. The moon shone bright as Miguel sped towards the town of Westport.

The young man looked into his rearview mirror and made sure that he was not being followed. His dark complexion was highlighted by his black hair and hazel eyes.

At the young age of twenty-five, Miguel had suffered more heartbreaks than most people suffered in a lifetime. His mother had become pregnant with him after she was raped by his father, and died after childbirth. His father was incarcerated for the rape and later was gunned down by prison guards after he tried escaping. Miguel was raised by his maternal grandparents in San Francisco until he was eighteen, when they were killed in an automobile accident by a drunk driver.

It was after the death of his grandparents that Miguel met Sonya. The two met at the University of Southern California where they both were getting their law degrees. Miguel and Sonya continued their relationship after college, at which time they both started employment at separate high-profile law firms.

During the past several months, Sonya started to spend less and less time with Miguel. Whenever they talked, Sonya always mentioned that she was very busy with several high-profile cases. Miguel became suspicious whenever Sonya did not come home after work.

One night the previous week, Miguel decided to surprise Sonya with a romantic picnic at her office. He walked into her office and found Sonya naked on her desk, having sex with her boss. Disgusted and embarrassed, Miguel left the office and drove back to their apartment.

The sound of the engine sputtering brought Miguel back to the present. He looked at his fuel gauge and noticed that the tank was near empty. Can anything else go wrong for me? Miguel thought to himself.

Just as he rounded the corner, Miguel noticed a sports car parked at the entrance to a cemetery. He guided the car to the entrance and stepped out. A small breeze flew through the trees.

This is a strange place for someone to be at this time of night but I will take help any place I can get it.

Miguel entered the cemetery and wandered around, looking for anybody that could give him gasoline for his car. He was so anxious to find help that he did not notice a pair of legs lying behind one of the headstones.

After a few minutes, Miguel decided to head back to the road when he noticed a flickering light emanating from one of the crypts. He headed down the hill to the dark edifice, hoping to only find a living person.

Miguel walked through the gate marked RILEY and entered the crypt. The light flickered from the room at the end of the corridor. He took a deep breath and slowly walked down the corridor to the lit room.

Upon entering the room, Miguel was amazed at how many candles were lit in the large room. As his eyes scanned the room full of paintings, Miguel noticed a cloaked figure at the opposite end of the room.

I’m sorry to intrude, explained Miguel, but my car ran out of gas and I was hoping you might be able to help me out.

The cloaked figure slowly turned around and faced Miguel. He was a tall man with deep blue eyes and shoulder-length gray hair. He wore a pullover ivory shirt that revealed a black rose pendant hanging around his neck. The man began to walk towards Miguel.

I’m afraid there is no gasoline here, the man said in a reserved tone. Please, sit down and rest yourself. The man pointed towards a chair in the middle of the large room, next to a coffin.

    I don’t want to be a bother…

You are not a bother, the man excitedly interrupted and then in a reserved, quiet tone said, I insist.

Very well, replied Miguel. He walked over to the large, red chair located in the middle of the room and seated himself. He started to feel uneasy as the man circled around him.

Forgive me, where are my manners? stated the mysterious man. My name is Bryce Riley. He presented his hand to Miguel. And yours would be? he inquired.

Miguel Garcia. I am pleased to meet you. He reached out and shaked Bryce’s hand. Miguel noticed that his skin felt cold to the touch.

Bryce kept the questions going as he continued to circle around Miguel. I don’t recall having seen you before in Westport. Passing through, are we?

I’m on my way home to San Francisco. My car ran out of gas and I pulled over at the cemetery. I noticed another car outside so I decided to come in and look for help.

I’m sorry to report, my friend, but there is no one here but I tonight. Bryce stopped in front of Miguel and looked at him with new desire.

Miguel became unsettled at the way Bryce was looking at him and decided that it was time for his farewell. Thank you for your hospitality, but I think I should be on my way now. He tried to stand up but his legs did not move. Miguel struggled to move his legs but found that he was unable to.

There is no need to struggle, as you will not be going anywhere anytime soon, Miguel Garcia.

Miguel looked up and was shocked to see that Bryce’s eyes had turned to a glowing red color. Who are you, he demanded.

Bryce laughed as he walked towards the frightened young man. Did it never occur to you that no human person lives in a crypt? I must say, Miguel, that for an attractive looking young man, your intelligence level is pretty shallow. To make everything easier for you, let me tell you what I am. He stopped in his footsteps. I am a vampire.

Miguel became scared for his life when Bryce reached the chair and began caressing him. His hands were clammy in color and felt colder than ice. What are you going to do to me? he inquired in a frightened whisper.

Since you are not very good at detective work, I will give you the basics of my plan, Bryce explained. As you can see, I have the power to control physical objects. I used my mind to paralyze your legs so you couldn’t escape. I did that because I have bigger plans for you.

What kind of plans? asked Miguel.

I’m looking for my next conquest.

When you say conquest, do you mean physically? Miguel was now aware of what danger he was in. I won’t let you rape me!

Bryce stared at Miguel with his mind powers until his young victim was completely hypnotized. Bryce reached over and ripped open Miguel’s shirt. His hands slowly explored the two muscularly-shaped pecs revealed underneath before moving on to the ripped six-pack abs below. Bryce savored every moment caressing the flesh of his newest victim.

After a few minutes, Bryce knew it was time to make Miguel his own. He stepped back from the young man. Miguel, rise up from the chair. It is now time to come to me!

Miguel slowly stood up from the chair and took two steps toward Bryce. The vampire slowly walked a circle around his victim before stopping at Miguel’s backside. Bryce placed his arms under Miguel’s shoulders and around his body before exploring the muscular body again. The tight flesh excited Bryce and it wasn’t long before he became fully aroused. He opened his mouth and revealed two fangs, hungry for fresh blood. Bryce plunged his fangs into Miguel’s neck and began drinking the life out of his victim. He felt Miguel’s body collapse into his arms and knew that his plan was working.

    Chapter 3

Sunlight streamed throughout the hills surrounding Westport. Birds were chirping and wildflowers sprouted up everywhere. A soft breeze flowed through the cemetery, brushing past the branches on the trees.

Miguel opened his eyes and instantly felt pain shoot through his entire body. He slowly moved his head toward the sunlight. The candles in the room had burned out during the night, leaving only a faint ray of light as a beacon to hope.

Miguel tried to sit up but the pain was too excruciating for him. As he collapsed back to the floor of the crypt, he felt a sharp pain in his neck. He slowly reached over to the left side of his neck and discovered two puncture wounds with his fingers. Miguel suddenly remembered that he was attacked by Bryce while in some kind of trance.

Aware that he was in more danger than ever before, Miguel knew that he needed to escape from the crypt. He slowly rolled himself over onto his stomach, encountering waves of pain with every movement. Miguel knew that as long as there was sunlight, Bryce would not be able to hurt him.

With determination in his eyes, Miguel painfully crawled towards the corridor leading to the outside world. Each movement sent jolts of pain and agony shooting through his weak body.

After moving only a few feet, Miguel collapsed in exhaustion. His body was too weak due to the blood that had been drained from his body the previous night. Miguel closed his eyes and fell asleep.

The noise of a creaking door awakened Miguel from his deep sleep. He was devastated when he discovered that it was nighttime again. He turned around slowly and watched as the coffin lid opened and Bryce stepped out from his daytime slumber.

What do we have here? inquired Bryce.

Miguel decided to be coy with his attacker. I was on my way out when I tripped and fell down. Do you think you could help me to my feet?

Bryce was amused at Miguel’s attempt at deception. Oh, really? For a moment there, I thought you were trying to escape. He approached Miguel with a sinister look on his face. There is no escaping your new life, Miguel. We are now bonded for all eternity!

What do you mean my new life? You can’t keep me here forever!

True, Bryce pointed out, but I don’t think you understand what happened last night. You see, when I attacked you, I took away part of your life as a human and injected you with that of everlasting life as a vampire.

Miguel was in shock at what he had just heard. I’m a vampire?

Bryce corrected him. Well, not just yet. After I have my way with you tonight, you will become fully integrated into the lifestyle of a vampire. Tonight will be your final metamorphosis into the eternal world of the living undead.

You can’t do this to me!"

Bryce laughed at Miguel. You are such a fool, young one. I have already done this to you. I need to perform one more task and your transformation into my world will be complete!

What will happen if I die before you finish? Miguel nervously asked.

It is quite simple, explained Bryce, you will simply not be a vampire.

Miguel let out a sigh of relief. Well, that’s good then because I would rather be dead than a vampire.

Bryce laughed with delight at Miguel’s innocence. I didn’t say you would die.

Confusion came over Miguel’s face. You said …

I said that you would not be a vampire. I didn’t say anything about you dying. Bryce continued to laugh as he walked around Miguel. If you don’t become a vampire, then you will spend eternity walking this planet as a spirit; a spirit that will never find peace. Come join me and you can prey on the weak, eliminating this world of humans who cannot defend themselves from us. Drink their blood of life and you shall have your peace. Turn away and condemn yourself to an eternal hell. The choice is yours. Bryce stopped in front of the chair and sat down.

Miguel thought about what Bryce had said. I don’t want to be a vampire but I also don’t want to be trapped in between both worlds. Miguel looked up at Bryce, who was patiently waiting for an answer.

My choice is to become a spirit, Miguel announced in defiance.

Bryce stood up, annoyed at Miguel’s final decision. The choice has already been made by me and you will become a vampire!

Miguel yelled back at Bryce as he tried to crawl away. You will never force me to change my mind!

We shall see about that, grinned Bryce. He flew to the other side of the room and landed in Miguel’s path. Bryce grabbed Miguel by the throat and threw him across the room. Miguel slammed into the wall and collapsed to the ground in excruciating pain.

Bryce walked over towards the victim and threw him up against the wall. Miguel noticed the two sharp fangs penetrating from beneath the vampire’s mouth.

Like I said, Miguel, the choice has already been made. Bryce sunk his teeth into Miguel’s neck and started drinking more blood out of his body. Miguel tried to fight off Bryce but collapsed into his attacker’s arms instead.

    Chapter 4

Forty-eight hours passed before Miguel regained consciousness. He awoke to find himself lying in Bryce’s coffin. He slowly sat up and looked around the room. There was no sign of Bryce around anywhere.

Miguel carefully climbed out of the coffin. Once on his feet, he realized that his body did not ache with pain anymore. He reached for his neck and discovered that the wounds from Bryce’s attacks had disappeared.

A small mirror caught Miguel’s attention from across the room. He was surprised that he didn’t remember seeing it before. He cautiously walked over toward the mirror and was shocked when he didn’t see his reflection in it. Miguel was tired of Bryce’s tricks and grabbed the mirror and smashed it to the ground.

As he wandered around the room, Miguel noticed something sticking out from underneath the table that the coffin rested on. He scurried over and revealed the item to be a small trunk. He pulled the trunk out from underneath the table and slowly raised the lid.

Inside the trunk were various pieces of clothing. Miguel found a black pullover shirt that was the perfect size for him. Since Bryce had torn his other shirt during the first attack, Miguel stripped off his shredded top and slipped on the black one. Miguel felt comfortable for the most part; the ruffled cuffs were going to take some getting used to.

At the bottom of the trunk, Miguel found a large black cloak. He knew that he needed to conceal himself if he was going to be able to escape from Bryce without being detected. He placed the cloak around his body and covered his head with the hood.

Miguel knew that if he didn’t leave now, Bryce might return and prevent him from escaping. He left the large room and cautiously walked down the large corridor towards the crypt gate. Once he reached the gate, he searched for any signs of Bryce. When Miguel decided that the coast was clear, he walked through the gate and hurried to the cemetery entrance.

As he carefully walked through the cemetery, Miguel felt his sense of hearing heightened. Every sound in the cemetery reverberated in Miguel’s head.

Miguel started down the main pathway when he heard the snapping of dead branches on the ground. Fearing that he was being followed by Bryce, Miguel started to pick up his walking pace. As he hurried along, Miguel almost tripped over a toppled headstone. He went to jump when his body leaped almost twenty feet past the obstacle.

Miguel landed with a thud to the ground. He was shocked to discover that he could leap such a large distance. Before he could figure out what exactly had happened, he picked himself up and ran to the entrance gate.

He arrived at the gate to find it padlocked. Miguel tried to break through the chains but was unable to. He noticed that both his car and the other car were no longer parked on the other side. Miguel knew that he needed to find another way out of the cemetery.

Miguel suddenly remembered about the leap and decided to give it another try. He gauged the fence to be about fifteen feet high. He took a deep breath and spread his cloak out to resemble wings.

He hunched his legs and a moment later, sprang up into the air. Miguel watched in amazement as he leaped over the fence to freedom. This time, however, he landed squarely on his two feet.

Miguel couldn’t believe at what had just happened. He became afraid that Bryce had kept his word and turned him into a vampire. He started to walk away when he tripped over a rock and fell to the ground. His hand became sliced on a sharp rock as he landed and started to bleed. Miguel watched the blood drip out of his hand and became amazed at the sight.

As he put his hand to his nose, a new sensation swept over his body. He watched as the wound miraculously disappeared from his hand. At the same time, he felt a twinge of movement in his mouth. Miguel put his finger in his mouth and discovered that two sharp fangs had protruded from his upper jaw. He suddenly realized that he was, indeed, a bona fide vampire.

Miguel’s sense of smell had been heightened and he tried to sniff out fresh blood. After a few moments, Miguel’s red eyes lit up and he darted out towards Westport to find his first victim.

From behind one of the trees inside the cemetery, Bryce grinned as he watched his protégé hunt for his first prey.

    Chapter 5

A calm breeze floated through the streets of Westport under a moonlit evening. The small town of two thousand was quiet except for the occasional stray cat trotting down the streets. Eric and Mona Pritchards enjoyed their nighttime walks together without the interruptions from their neighbors.

Don’t forget that you have your eye appointment tomorrow with Doctor Stiles, reminded Mona.

Yes dear. The appointment is already on my calendar, not to mention that you have been reminding me for the past week.

Well, you tend to forget things. Sometimes I don’t you know what you would do without me.

Yes dear, replied Eric in a patronizing tone.

The couple rounded the corner and started on their walk out of town when they heard a rustle in nearby bushes.

    What was that? inquired Mona.

It is probably just some chipmunks. I found three on our front porch this morning. I don’t know who was more scared, the chipmunks or me.

Mona didn’t buy Eric’s reasoning. Chipmunks aren’t active at night. It has to be something else.

Eric tried to calm his wife down. Well, we do have raccoons in the area and I know they are active at night because they keep knocking Hank’s trashcans over every night. I keep telling him to lock them up but you know how stubborn he is.

A scruffy-looking old man approached the couple from behind the bushes. His clothes were tattered and smelled as if they hadn’t been cleaned in weeks.

Do you have any money you can spare me for a meal? he asked.

I’m sorry but we don’t have anything, Eric replied.

The old man thanked them and headed towards the town. Eric and Mona continued on their walk, keeping an eye out for the old man in case he decided to attack them for not helping him out.

All of a sudden, a cloaked figure leaped out from behind the bushes and crashed into the terrified couple. Mona rolled down the street a few feet before she stopped. She turned around in horror.

The cloaked figure removed its hood to reveal itself. It was Miguel. Mona screamed as Miguel picked up Eric from the ground and sank his glistening fangs into the horrified man’s neck. Miguel drank the blood from his victim’s body for several minutes. When he was finished, he threw Eric’s lifeless body into the nearby woods.

When Mona witnessed the attack on her husband, she picked herself up and started running into town for help. Miguel noticed the woman running out of the corner of his eye and leaped into the air after her.

Mona had only run approximately sixty feet when Miguel landed directly in her path. He grabbed her and exposed his fangs to his next victim. Mona screamed as she tried to free herself from Miguel’s grip but was unsuccessful. Miguel sank
