About this ebook

Fred was already an old man when he began delivering, with every load of firewood, lively tales about bygone times in old Vermont. He had a real talent for spinning yarns and recounting a vivid chapter of Vermont's history, which somehow has failed to reach the learned history books; though Fred's tales speak volumes about the rugged people who live in Vermont. Fred's skill was the art of historical recounting through storytelling. But Fred's tales were not the stories of battles, politics or governmental upheavals. Rather they were always humorous and they were the stories of real people struggling to survive and better themselves.

    Introduction

Fred Bernard was a true Vermonter. I do not know when his family first came to live in southern Vermont in the Whitingham-Wilmington area, but it may have been not too long after the first permanent European settlers arrived. These settlers came to this pleasant valley after the end of the French and Indian wars made it safe enough for Europeans to live in the Green Mountains, a generation or so before the Revolutionary War. In any event, Fred had lived all his life here, and when I first met him he had been living here-- and collecting the stories he loved to tell-- for some eight decades

We built our second home in lovely southern Vermont as a refuge from the hectic and high tech urban environment, as a place to rediscover the beauty and peacefulness of nature and as a focal point for enjoyment and togetherness for our growing family. Discovering Fred Bernard and his stories of old Vermont was an unexpected and happy bonus. Meeting Fred and listening to his
