About this ebook

Southern white rhinos are in trouble. For years, a rumor has been spreading that their horns can be used to cure cancer, and poachers have been targeting these gentle creatures. The Animal Rescue Series by Sandra Markle is a wonderful way to learn about endangered species and what is being done to save and protect them. This book is not the feel good story that some of the others are as the Southern White Rhinoceros is still very much in danger from poaching. It was unbelievable to read that this is the second time they are endangered. Using protected parks, guards and dogs, drugs to ruin the horns for humans, the fight continues. The photographs that are used in the book are all beautiful. They are in the natural habitats of the animals. It is so sad to see animals killed for no reason other than a rumor that the horns cure cancer. Baby rhinos are often left orphaned and even if rescued can die of depression. The book talks about how rhinos live and about their territories and family life. Their usefulness is also discussed. At the back of the book there are resources, glossary, what can you do to help and other facts. Some of the information in the book is rather upsetting so I would not recommend this book for young children. It is a great resource when studying endangered species and how we can help and what is being done around the world. A great addition to any school library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book via netgalley.
