    CHAPTER 1

The flames of the ceremonial purity fire created an uncomfortable, hot musty blanket in the air. Everyone was sweating, but no one dared to complain as the Holy Women stoked the voracious flames. Low moans of prayers from the acolytes filled the surrounding air. The trees seemed to sway in submission to their prayers. As they chanted, Karis could feel her knees shaking. This was one of the last steps before her consecration. She was eighteen, never been with a man, her only crime to date was roaming the forest alone with scrolls she borrowed from Anato the village apothecary. The latter was her secret though, and she knew the trees would never tell anyone.

The chanting grew louder, and birds and wolves seemed to echo the cry of the Holy Women. Karis gasped, inadvertently. There was a chill now. The fire was swaying lower, and the moon seemed brighter. The women must have sensed it, and even her father did, though he was just a casual observer not a religious man. All he cared about was that his daughter did not run away. Her father knew she would run the minute she was untied, but without this marriage, her father, a high
