Author

Lori Svensen

Student-of-the-world, jill-of-many-trades; mother and dreamer ready to share dreams with the reader.  Lori has never been able to follow everyone else, nor always follow directions or social expectations. Hence, her writing also tends to cross genres to create her own unique blend. A'mara Books are stories about personal relationships with strong flavors of fantasy, sci-fi, action and adventure, all wrapped into one plus a sense of social and moral responsibility that tends to be lost in today's world.

    Prologue

    850 T.C.E.

    Irola

    .

Irola is the global capital of the planet of Terrenden. It occupies about 1000 square kilometers, approximately the size of Tahiti in the Other World.

In 850 of the Terrenden Common Era, its population is about 100 million people with a population density of about 100,000 per square kilometer. As such, the entire island is paved over and built on to at least ten stories deep, and much higher in certain places such as in the Parliament District.

At this time, there are several notable groups of people you need to know about.

    A’mara

The A’mara are a sub-race of highly-gifted and highly-skilled people. Tradition says that the A’mara originated in the country of A’mara in the north. Leya-sensitives comprise of approximately 0.01 % of the population of Terrenden and are usually marked with some red in their hair. A’mara are highly-trained and adhere to high moral and ethical standards as well as a code of honor.

Of course, not everyone who is sensitive is recognized or trains and some don’t train with the A’mara – which brings us to the next group.

    Balan

The Balan argue that they were the Original A’mara. Most (even A’mara) dismiss the argument as a border dispute and ignore it, but it’s very important to the Balan. These are leya-sensitives who have decided to do things a different way. They tend to see the A’mara as overbearing, self-righteous and unnecessarily rule-driven. This is also a place where disaffected A’mara tend to go when they’ve run into problems of authority.

    Neví

This altruistic society originating in 829 TCE have made themselves a very sharp thorn in the A’mara sides. They originated as a bunch of disaffected A’mara who didn’t want to be Balan, but developed an idea to build public housing projects which would be funded by fleecing the rich in the form of entertainment. These projects succeeded beyond their wildest dreams, but lead to even further greed to the extent that many elections are corrupted through their (oft-successful) attempts to manipulate the voting public.

No matter who is in charge and who is butting heads with whom, there are always people at the bottom who somehow manage to slip through the net.

    Please meet Iyva Erynnis.

    Part 1 – Chapter 1

(early in the year - mid-Kalinari

    850 Terrenden Common Era)

    Irola - Understory

    .

Iyva Erynnis waited at a traffic light under a tattered umbrella in the cold seasonal downpour in Irola. She shivered as the drops came through a large, ragged hole and hit her skinny bare arms. She mused about how amazing it was that, despite all the looming skyscrapers, broad skywalks and busy skyways two dozen stories above, so much rain still got to the lowly, dirty street level. The moisture washed away some of the pollution out of the foul Understory air and made it smell a little better.

Most of the street traffic all over Terrenden had been halted years ago, before she was born, in a feeble political effort to conserve waning resources and reduce severe pollution. In reality, the rich and elite could still drive whatever and whenever they wanted. All they had to do was pay the extra taxes. Those in the middle used mass transit or appealed to those above them for highly-coveted Luxury Passes for special occasions where the best transport was justifiable. Those at the bottom were conveniently forgotten – as tends to happen whenever governments have more urgent things to worry about – which is most of the time.

Despite that, people-powered modes of transport were still thick in the Understory. Bikes, trikes, scooters and even the occasional animal-pulled wagon crowded the dangerous roads on the ground. No police ventured down this far, so mishaps were usually settled with fists and veleda laser bolts. Signs were frequently ignored and road rage was the norm.

The signal changed, the traffic stopped.
