W hat the hell is a fig, anyway? I grumble at my brother-in-law’s broad back as we traipse up his snowy front sidewalk. And why the hell did we need to drive through a blizzard to get them? Also… dude, you need to snowblow."

Don’t start with me, Tate, Gabe grumbles back over his shoulder. I’m saving it to get out of the house later. You know, when it’s time to clean up the kitchen.

I stop in my tracks. Bro, that’s brilliant.

Gabe grins at me. You haven’t figured that trick out yet? Dude. I thought you were smart.

I shrug as I open the door. You learn something new every day.

We shake our snowy coats and boots off inside the door, and the home-cooked Christmas scents assail us. Christmas cookies, turkey, stuffing… All of it. All of it that I’ve never had before this year. I never knew that Christmas dinner was such a big deal.

But I do now.

Maddy and Mila have been cooking for days.

Mila runs out of the kitchen door chasing our toddler, Madelyn. Madelyn clutches a small sack of sugar upside down…and sugar trails behind her on the hardwood floor.

Mila grabs the sugar from our daughter’s grubby hands at the same time as I snake an arm around my gorgeous wife and pull her to me. She squirms in my arms.

Pax, I love you, but you’ve got to let go. I’ve got four pots on the stove right now.

Mila, I murmur into her ear as I wipe a smudge of flour from her cheek. Bring it down a notch. It’s Christmas. You’re not supposed to stress.

She twists out of my grasp, grabs the bag of figs from my hand and heads back for the kitchen with the empty sugar sack dangling from her fingers. But then, she pauses.
