The Tome’s Ending: In exchange for magical powers, Taishi makes a pact with an Old One, Kohdon, to destroy the paladin, Tristan, who swore to destroy him. As Taishi spends more time with Tristan and develops feelings for him, he's not sure he can follow through.

The New Path: Remi, a knight for the lord's army, is mortally wounded in combat. Naseem, a magician who has to keep his magic a secret, saves him from death, but can't heal him completely. When Remi is declared dead, the pair try to decide their next move. Make his survival known and continue having Naseem live in secret, or run away together, but leaving Remi's sister Nadia behind.

Second Chances: Hassan dies in battle protecting his orc lover, Turge, but he wakes up to a domestic life with Turge. The Offer

Julio Alvarez pulled the curtain to make an entrance for his patient as she left. Julio checked his datapad and read, Aman Kasmir.

His eyes rose up off of his datapad to see a rather tall man stand up from the waiting room. His rich, brown eyes watched Julio in a way that made his knees just a bit weak. Julio raised his head to look at Kasmir as he passed him. His black hair was cropped short with a few white flecks in his sideburns. A slightly raised scar stretched from just below his right eye and through his thick lips. Julio watched those lips as he said, Most people just call me Kasmir, but you can call me Aman.

Kasmir walked past the curtain and sat on the bed. Julio let the curtain fall and followed him. Kasmir wore an olive green, long-sleeved shirt with a logo of the TNO over his left breast. It fitted a firm, muscular frame that Julio tried not to admire too closely. Kasmir took off his satchel. His left hand wore a black glove. Julio said, It says here you’re having trouble with a cybernetic arm and leg, but it doesn’t specify the issue.

Oh, they’re both different issues. The arm’s reaction is delayed, Kasmir said. He rolled up his shirt’s sleeve to reveal a cybernetic arm that reached nearly halfway through his left bicep. He left the glove covering the hand. It works fine, but there’s a slight delay.

And I suspect in your line of work, you need it to be responsive.

TNO stood for The New Order – the Atlas’ main military organization. It was still usually called the TNO despite the the being in the short form. It wasn’t uncommon to see the TNO on the station, and it was, however, extremely common for soldiers to have cybernetic replacements.

Kasmir shrugged. It’s been a while since I’ve been on the field.

Julio lightly touched his arm and felt the plating that protected the mechanisms inside. It was a standard military cybernetic. Mass produced and a tad unreliable. He checked where the deep silver met the warm, reddish-brown of his skin. Julio said, If you’re a deserter, it’s wiser not to wear the shirt.

Grinning, Kasmir said, Would you turn me in?

Why bother? They’ll just put you on the field and then you’d flee back here.

    I’m not a deserter.

Julio said, Can I take this off?

    Go ahead.

Julio twisted the arm and pried the prosthetic off. Four cylindrical implants reached out of his skin. He checked the implants on his bicep and cleaned them carefully with a cotton swab and a lubricant specifically for them. Kasmir shivered slightly and said, Am I supposed to feel that?

Sorry, I should have warned you. Have you never done this before?

    No?

And your leg is cybernetic too?

    Yeah, Kasmir said.

You should know how to take care of them, Julio said. That might be the problem. Do they not tell you?

Kasmir said, We had a guy that just took care of that stuff for us. He probably did that and I just never noticed. He grinned at Julio and added, I guess I’m a little more sensitive to your touch.

Heat rushed to Julio’s cheeks. Kasmir’s smile widened, and Julio avoided his eyes. I can give you some of the - the lubricant to take with you, Julio said. They should have some in the medbay of your base. Let’s see if that did the trick.

Julio put Kasmir’s arm back on and waited as Aman moved his fingers. That’s a lot better, he said.

    Is it syncing perfectly?

Yeah, I’d say so. Aman leaned closer to Julio and said, Should we test out my hand’s mobility?

The come-on briefly went over Julio’s head as he said, No. I’ll still want to take off those plates and take a look inside, he raised his eyes away from his arm to see Aman watching him with a smile. He realized what Aman meant and stammered, But - but let’s try your leg next. What’s wrong there? Same thing?

Um, sometimes my groin goes numb.

    What? Really?

Yeah, Kasmir replied. It’s just my leg that’s cybernetic, but it’s right up to my pelvis. Hold on, I’ll just show you.

Kasmir took off his jeans and sat back on the bed. He rolled up his boxer-briefs to show where the cybernetic leg switched to skin. Julio tried to remain professional, but Aman had the hugest flaccid cock he’d ever seen. He seriously wondered if Aman hid something in his underwear, and he tried to look away as Aman continued, It’s a little tough to get the leg on and off.

The scarring around the wound was much rougher than it was with his arm. Julio suspected they sacrificed some of Kasmir’s arm for a cleaner cut, but they just didn’t have the space to do it with his leg. They had clearly transplanted some of the skin to try to rebuild the area. Can I take it off? Julio asked.

    Yeah, sure.

Julio took the leg off and spotted six implants – which was rare. It was as if it was done by someone inexperienced. He checked around the implants. Julio noted that the parts in his skin were a bit sloppier than his arm. The skin around one implant was scarred in a way that suggested it had been infected for a while before someone caught it. Julio asked, How long have you had this?

Oh hell, I don’t know. It’s older than you.

Must have been a pretty early model.

Yeah, Kasmir replied, rubbing the back of head with his mechanical hand. It’s always been a little spotty, but my groin’s just been recent. Maybe it doesn’t have anything to do with the implant.

    Has there been any changes?

    With the leg?

    Yes.

Kasmir folded his hands in his lap as Julio cleaned the implants on his leg. He said, We lost our mechanic. I haven’t had anyone to check in with.

Have you experienced any pain in your leg? Julio asked.

    Kasmir laughed. Everything hurts, kid.

    Kid?

    Yeah, kid.

    I’m 34.

    And?

Julio huffed and said, Did anything hurt while I was cleaning them?

    Not really.

I’m going to touch them, okay? Let me know if anything hurts.

    All right.

Julio carefully put his finger in the outlet of each implant and moved it slightly. On one near the end, Kasmir winced. Julio drew his finger out carefully, and Kasmir said, So that’s the fucker. You know how to fix the implants?

Well, we don’t know what the issue is. Another one had been infected, right?

    Yeah.

It could be the implant acting up, or it could be hiding an infection from us. I don’t want to pull out the implant only to find an infection behind it that we could have treated without removing it, Julio said. Replacing an implant isn’t an easy job, but the infection - it’s not like a normal infection, it’s an implant infection. It’s just a quick shot.

Can you give me the shot and we’ll see how it goes?

How long are you planning to stay on the Osiris station? Julio asked. You said you didn’t have a mechanic on the base?

Probably just a day. I came to see you.

Yeah, there are a lot of mechanics on this outpost.

    No, you specifically, Kasmir said.

Julio’s eyes rose to meet his. Me?

We need a new mechanic on base, Kasmir said. I don’t care if you don’t believe the BS they try to feed us. Those kids need help.

So you’re suggesting I give you a shot now, follow you down planetside, and then wait to see if I need to replace your implant? Julio almost laughed. And I suppose you’re telling me to work for free too.

No, Kasmir said. You’d probably make about what you make here, but you’ll get housing and food and medical benefits.

And I’d have to support a war and I don’t agree with, Julio said, looking at the implant. Can you take time off to give me time to figure this out?

I’m not saying you should be supporting the war, Kasmir said. We’re fighting a species we can’t understand or communicate with for a patch of land they don’t even use. We have no idea what they’re thinking, and to be frank I don’t think they know what we’re trying to do.

    Right.

But we can’t just live on space stations like this.

    I’ve been doing all right.

Right, because you love living in a contained space with a few fragile plants being your only life support, Kasmir said. Because you love having population controlled to the point that the application to reproduce takes five years at least.

I don’t want to argue, Julio said. You can try asking the other mechanics. Maybe one of them will be stupid enough to help.

He turned his back to Kasmir to prepare the injection. It pissed him off that he made some points, but it didn’t mean they had the right to fight and displace an entire alien civilization they still couldn’t figure out how to communicate with. The TNO said that the aliens fought first, but most who lived on the stations had their doubts.

Julio filled the needle, and Kasmir said, Whatever you think about the war, you have to admit that those kids down there need your help.

Julio didn’t reply. He carefully watched the implant as he pressed the injection into his flesh. Usually he talked through the injection to keep the person from thinking about the needle, but he had nothing to say
