    The Awakening - Ryiesesa K

    yelled.

    Chapter One

    Surprise!!

Hello, my name is Maranda, Maranda Michael. I’m eighteen years old and a freshmen business major at Shady Branch University. This will be my first time leaving home and to be honest I’m sort of nervous. Just a month ago I was walking across the stage graduating high school, which was the happiest day of my life. It quickly turned into the worst realizing I was leaving all my friends behind. High school was amazing and I know what you’re expecting, for this to be some love story of how I left my friends and the love of my life behind to further my education, but this is the opposite. There is no high school sweet heart in fact I’ve never had the chance to kiss the lips of a guy. I’m not unattractive or anything. It’s just I haven't found the spark that I'm looking for. As far as friends I only have two, Becka and Charlie. They’re twins, we grew up together. My mom Amanda and their mom Veronica were best friends in college. They went on double dates until my mom met my dad. Tony but everyone calls him Tone; he has four businesses, car lots actually. My family is doing very well; we have nothing to complain about. Except a few minor things, but every family has secrets. I’m sure I’ll be able to manage without my friends; I mean being the only child and all you get used to being alone. In solitude I find joy.

It was a beautiful view from the stomp covered by the trees. Nothing but woods as far as the eye could see. In the other direction you could see a tiny bit of the road with not a car in sight. Summer stood to capture a few photos. As she stood her curly pale blue hair was blowing in the wind. It made her feel magical. She sat down her camera to grab a stone necklace from her bag and placed it around her neck. Tone had been gone for about ten minutes now and she was beginning to wonder where he was. She took out her phone to see if she had service. Crap no bars. Nice job Verizon, she said to herself with a sigh.

SUMMER!! SUMMER!! SUMMER!!, Tone yelled. She immediately grabbed her things and ran toward his voice. What is all the yelling for, Summer she shouted. Look, Tone said franticly. Right up the hill was a cave. It looked as if there used to be a path going toward it but nature has taken it back over. Lets go, Tone said with excitement. They made their way up the hill. The closer they got the warmer it became it felt as if the sun was sitting on the back of their necks.

At the entrance of the cave Tone stood waiting for Summer to catch up. Something doesn't feel right, she said with hesitation. What do you mean, Tone questioned. It’s nothing, lets go in, Summer said with doubt. They began to go inside. Summer stopped to take a photo. Just as the lens snapped a baby began to cry. Do you hear that, Tone whispered. How can I hear anything over the sound of you talking every five minutes haha of course I hear it. Summer jokingly. She struggled put her camera into her bag. They stopped moving to see if they could hear a little better. The cries began to get louder and were now accompanied by the cries of adults. Something was happening. Is that thunder, Summer asked in fear. Sounds more like a stampede, and it’s coming our way, RUN!! Tone yelled.

    Chapter Two

    Highway or Dieway

I awoke to the smell of breakfast and looked over at the clock its 8:30, I over slept! Getting dressed I head downstairs. My mom and grandmother are making breakfast while my grandfather is at the table watching the news on the dining room television. It’s something about the mayor was caught up in a drug sting. I sit down and pour a glass of orange juice. Looking around I say, Good morning guys, where’s dad? My grandmother rubs my moms back as she says, He's at work baby. WHAT!! So he's not going to be here to see me off! I yell. My mom looks at me with a disappointing look, He will try to baby, please don’t be sad. Giggling I respond, I’m not surprised. I’d be a fool to expect anything otherwise.

After breakfast they walked me to the car. Nothing fancy just a 91 Cadillac Sedan. Not the car I wanted but definitely one I wouldn't mind settling for. Also it was mine. Most kids my age don’t just start off with a car, they have to work for it. I just didn't understand that my dad owned car lots, but this car was a gift from my grandparents. They are always there to pick up his slack. After the goodbyes I got in the car. As I'm backing out of the drive way I notice them crying. Its sad to leave them but I knew I had to. I didn't want to follow in my dads’ steps. Being so busy working that I couldn't be with my family.

Pulling out of the neighborhood I turn up the music. My favorite song is on the radio The Days by Avicii. Rolling down all the windows and opening the sun roof. Woohoo, I scream! This must be what freedom taste like. As I'm jamming my phone began to ring. Turning down the music to answer, it's my mom. Are you doing okay? she asked. Yes, mom, I've only been driving for an hour. I said. She responded, Okay baby call me when you get there so I know your safe. Hanging up I blast the music. Singing along having a great time.

After an hour of driving my stomach began to growl. I have to get food but in Mississippi I don’t think thats a such a good idea. You know you always hear those stories and of course if you haven't been under a rock you've heard about what the police have been doing. I made a quick stop at a Burger King being vegan there aren't many food choices. Sitting in the parking lot eating I began to open the box but my phone rang. Hello, I answer. Hello, hi is this Miranda? said the voice of an unfamiliar female. Yes, ma'am it is. May I ask who's speaking? I replied. It’s Christy, I'm your roommate at Shady. I was just calling to give you my number. I just made it to campus and am waiting for you before I set up the room. She said. I responded, Hey Christy, I'm on my way; I’ll be there soon. Thanks for waiting. Hanging up the phone I check the gps. I knew New Orleans was far but my God I didn't fully think this drive through. It's getting dark I should probably see if I can make it a little further.

Okay Maranda, lets play a little game of beat the gps I said to myself. I had about 3 more hours of driving to do. Im sure I can make it in 2 and a half. I know it doesn't sound like much but this girl is tired. Okay, okay you have to stop talking to yourself you're not a crazy lady. Opening the sun roof so I can admire the moon I begin to drive a little faster. No one was out tonight just me and the open highway. This is pretty cool my most recent adventure. I wonder what adventures college holds. I thought to myself.

Hitting a pot hole I realize how bad I have to pee. I have to find an exit. Taking the first one not noticing how far out I had to drive. Oh well its to late to turn around. Driving down a long dark road something runs out in front of my car. A part of me wants to keep driving but another part of me is saying stop. I pull to the side of the road to check the tires, they're fine. I check the road to see what I hit but there’s nothing there. I immediately jump back into the car and speed off. Whatever is happening I don’t want to be apart of it. I make it to the store and quickly use the restroom.

Back on the freeway I notice I'm only 20 mins out. I call Christy but it goes to voicemail. I send her a text and let her know I'm almost there.

Pulling up to the school I am in amazement. The buildings are huge and it has its own little
