About this ebook

In Organic Outreach for Families, Kevin and Sherry Harney share insights from the Scriptures and give practical advice from their own experience to help you learn how to transform your home into a lighthouse of God’s amazing grace.

The Harneys discuss five ways you can naturally share your faith with others:

  • Reaching your own children with the message of Jesus
  • Sharing God’s grace with your extended family
  • Raising your children to be beacons of light in their schools and in the neighborhood
  • Opening the doors of your home to make it attractive and welcoming
  • Shining the light of grace into your broader community

The Harneys balance a concern for developing your home into a safe, secure environment with the biblical mandate for believers to be salt and light in the world. Pastors and parents will discover creative ways families can become a natural and winsome presence in their schools, through community activities, and as a witness in their neighborhoods.

Introduction

A Light in the Darkness

Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

— Matthew 5:16

Many of us are missing something in life because we are after the second best. I put before you what I have found to be the best — one who is worthy of all our devotion — Jesus Christ. He is the Saviour for the young and the old. Lord, here I am.

— Eric Liddell, Olympic gold medalist and missionary to China

Over the past thirty years, Sherry and I have lived in all sorts of places. We’ve lived in an apartment, a trailer, a triplex (in a very rough neighborhood), a townhouse, a parsonage, and a house. Though each structure was different, we observed one thing that remained constant: it isn’t the type of home but the people in it that make a difference. It is through the residents, not the structure, that God shines his light in the darkness. Our prayer and desire has been the same in each place we have lived: Lord, let your light so fill our hearts and home that it shines into the community around us. Wherever God puts us, we want people to see the face of Jesus and experience his grace in natural and organic ways. This has happened in each place we have lived.

Every house, apartment, trailer, military residence, townhome, duplex, triplex, and condominium can be a lighthouse of God’s presence and grace. God dreams of this. Jesus died for this. The living God longs for his presence and power to be on display, shining brightly, in your neighborhood. The fact that you are reading this book says something about your heart. It beats with God’s heart. You want your home to be attractive to others, a beacon of Christ-honoring influence.

Homes are not the only place where God shines his light. God plants churches all over the world to reflect his love and exhibit his amazing grace.¹ He also sends his people into the world to bring his message of salvation to the lost, broken, and hurting.² You can find plenty of books (including some that we have written) that aim to help you and your church become a more effective witness. What is often overlooked and forgotten is God’s design for every Christian home to be a lighthouse. The average home can be the place where people discover what only the Savior can bring.

Living in a neighborhood presents a strategic opportunity to be a witness of God’s grace. People see you come and go. They watch how you live. Neighbors hear how you talk to your spouse and kids. They see how you spend your time together. Living in close proximity creates an atmosphere where the Holy Spirit can move and do beautiful things. God wants people to be drawn to our homes because they are outposts of his grace, joy, hope, truth, and love in a world that hungers for all of these things. In this dark world there is a profound need for light, and when light shines in the darkness, people are drawn to it. Like a warm campfire on a cold and pitch-black night, people can’t help but come near. When you add in some hot cocoa and s’mores, it’s irresistible!

OUR STORY

My wife, Sherry, and I come from very different backgrounds. Sherry grew up in a family with strong Christian roots. She went to church twice every Sunday and attended Sunday school faithfully. She regularly attended youth group events. Each Wednesday, Sherry’s family gathered with God’s people to study the Bible and encourage one another. Church activities were a valuable part of her life, and Sherry was often the last person to leave church because she so enjoyed the connection with other believers. She was hungry to learn the things of God.

I, on the other hand, grew up outside the church, with no faith framework or understanding of God. I lived in a loving and caring home, but we did not go to church, talk about God, or pray before meals, and we certainly did not recognize Jesus as our Savior. Faith was not even an ancillary part of our lives. God was a nonissue. Yet by God’s amazing grace, I heard the message of the gospel and was saved by Jesus during my high school years. I became active in sharing my faith and soon had a growing desire not only to follow Christ but to teach others to do the same.

When Sherry and I first met, in 1982, we shared this common passion for people to know the amazing grace of God, the life-changing gospel of Jesus, and the tender filling of the Holy Spirit. We married in 1984, and from the start we were unified in our vision to do all we could to let the light of Jesus shine in and through us, wherever we lived. Almost ten years into our marriage, God clarified this vision even further. We began to understand that the Holy Spirit uses ordinary people right where they live to shine his light in the darkness. So we prayed in very specific ways that our home would become a beacon of God’s light and would shine in our community to draw people to Jesus. We found we had a new passion for our neighbors to know the love and grace of God.

That vision and passion led to a three-book series on what we refer to as organic outreach. The first book, Organic Outreach for Ordinary People, focuses on how your personal lifestyle and journey of faith present natural opportunities for sharing God’s message of love with the people around you.³ I wrote it to help ordinary people — not just the highly evangelistic, confrontational types — learn to communicate and share the extraordinary message of the gospel. The concept of organic outreach is based on the conviction that we can share the love, grace, and message of Jesus in ways that feel natural for us, regardless of our personality type, life experience, or skill set, and we can learn to connect with the people around us right where they are. Organic outreach is not a program that every person follows the same way. It is an understanding of faith and life that releases every believer to share the love and message of Jesus in a way that feels right for them.

In Organic Outreach for Churches, I develop the vision of sharing the good news of the Savior in natural ways through the local church.⁴ Sadly, some congregations choose to circle the wagons, hunker down, and protect their turf. They do all they can to keep the world from getting in. But this is not God’s divine design. He wants every church to become a mighty force for God in its community and beyond.

This book, Organic Outreach for Families, shows what God’s call to share our faith in natural, organic ways means in the context of the home. It’s a book we’ve written to help ordinary families, like yours, make a God-honoring impact right where he has placed you. We write from personal experience, so most of our examples and illustrations involve families with parents and children living at home. But while the ideas and concepts are primarily directed at families, the content will also be helpful for newly married couples, empty nesters, and any Christian who wants their home to be a place where the light of God’s grace shines.

THE JOURNEY AHEAD OF US

This book is structured in three sections. The first section focuses on helping parents reach their children and extended family with the love and truth of Jesus. You will find practical tools to point your family members toward the Savior in natural, effective, and fun ways. If you are a grandparent, these chapters will also help you to communicate the love and grace of Jesus to your grandchildren. We believe that before we can be a lighthouse of God’s grace, we must know how to bring the truth and friendship of Jesus to the people closest to us. If this is where you are in your journey, begin in section one.

The next section digs a bit deeper into the importance of raising children who don’t merely receive the light of Jesus but who let it shine through them. We can’t just share the good news with our kids, watch them enter a relationship with Jesus, and think our job is done. We need to help our children enter into the work of the Great Commission, discipling them and teaching them how to share their faith with others. Jesus was clear about this when he said, Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.⁵ Jesus promised that we will be empowered to do what he commanded, saying, You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.⁶ Jesus gave his final directives to his followers through these powerfully instructive moments after his resurrection and before he ascended to heaven, and we believe these commands should be the passionate cry of our children’s hearts, even from their youngest days. God desires that our homes be incubators of spiritual health and maturity, and this includes developing an evangelistic passion in our children.

The final section of the book explores how to transform your home into a lighthouse of God’s love and grace. The homes we live in can become attractive locations for children, teens, and other adults. God wants to use us to give others a bearing in the storms of life, a point of reference that helps them change direction, like a lighthouse that keeps ships from crashing on dangerous shores. A lighthouse, ultimately, guides people into a safe harbor. In this section, we’ll consider ways our home can help people come in from the storm-filled world and find rest, hope, and a safe haven in Jesus Christ. We’ll look at practical ways families can live, love, serve, and speak with grace. We will also look at how to go into our community and bring the gospel of Jesus to people right where they are. It’s not enough to shine our light and hope people will notice it and be drawn to our home to meet Jesus. Some may come, but many will not. So we also need to be ready to go out, to meet people where they are.

YOUR HOME, A BEACON OF GOD’S LIGHT

What does it look like for your home to be a beacon of God’s presence in your neighborhood and community? We want to begin by clarifying that it will look a little different for each of us. What images come to your mind? Perhaps a place for people to stop in unannounced, where they know they are welcome at any time? Maybe you picture a comfortable space where others can sit for a leisurely dinner? Or a location where conversations about life and God are normal and natural? Somewhere folks can stop, take a deep breath, and relax? A spot where someone can unload their burdens? A location where they can sit by some flowers or a quiet pond, feel a gentle breeze, or see a beautiful sunset? Maybe you picture a place where people can laugh until it hurts or cry until they are out of tears?

Every lighthouse home will look a bit different, but they will all have one thing in common. They will be places where Jesus is King, where his love is present, and where the Holy Spirit is at work. A lighthouse home is a place where the amazing grace of God is felt and the saving message of Jesus is heard. It’s a place where the glow of God’s light is strong and people are drawn to the Savior. Homes like this can change a community, a state, and a nation, even the world.

If you are interested in having a home like this, in praying with fresh boldness and loving others with grace, this book was written for you. We’ve filled it with stories and examples from our own experience, but we’ve also made it a toolbox of practical ideas that you can adapt to your home and community right away. Before you begin, though, we encourage you to brace yourself. When you commit your home to God, you must be prepared for what will happen when God shows up. He will always do something far beyond your wildest dreams. This is an adventure that can begin today, and it will last the rest of your life. Trust us, you will no longer be satisfied with seeing your home as simply a place to live. Your heart will quickly be captured by the vision of being a shining light of God’s presence in a dark and desperate world. Let the adventure begin!

Part One

REACHING YOUR OWN FAMILY

Something is very wrong if we reach our neighbors with the love of Jesus but our children feel forgotten and marginalized. We have confused our priorities if we invest more time in our church than we do in our own children. Our first priority as parents is to love, teach, and lead our children toward an authentic and life-changing relationship with the Savior.

Jesus called his followers to be his witnesses to the very ends of the earth, but he also told them to start right where they lived (Acts 1:8). This section is a reminder that God calls us to reach our family with the love, grace, and message of Jesus Christ before we turn our attention to our neighbors and community.

Chapter One

Living the Gospel in Your Home

Kevin

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.

— Deuteronomy 6:4–7

I have but one passion: It is He, it is He alone. The world is the field and the field is the world; and henceforth that country shall be my home where I can be most used in winning souls for Christ.

— Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf

As a junior in college and a fairly new follower of Christ, I was excited to be moving to the Midwest to attend a Christian school filled with passionate, committed, and excited young believers. I had attended only public schools before, and so I arrived at my new college with great enthusiasm.

As I got to know my fellow students, however, I was shocked to discover that many of them were angry with their parents and hostile toward God. I spent time listening to young men and women who had grown up in a pastor’s home or were raised on the mission field. Often, they were resentful of, not excited about, the Christian faith. To be fair, some of the finest young people I have ever known attended this school. They loved Jesus, and they longed to share the good news of the Savior with others. But they were the exception. An overwhelming number of the students were either hostile toward God or apathetic about the gospel. Some had been forced to attend this school because it was the alma mater of their parents and grandparents. Some admitted that they were not even sure if they believed in God or the Bible. Others assented to the Christian faith but seemed indifferent to growing in their faith.

I had expected a campus teeming with students who were excited and committed followers of Jesus. I assumed my classmates would be thankful for the chance to attend such a great Christian school. I thought they would be hungry to be equipped to bring the good news of Jesus to the world.

I was wrong.

I was disturbed each time I met a student who was hurt, angry, or apathetic about their faith. I found myself wondering why some kids who grew up in strong Christian homes ended up far from God.

During that year of college, my future wife, Sherry, was living two thousand miles away in California. We talked on the phone once a week (this was before cell phones, text messaging, email, and Skype), and I learned that she had also encountered people who were raised in Christian families but had wandered from the faith. We talked about these encounters and began praying about the home environment we wanted our family to have when we were married. We discussed how we did not want our kids to end up bitter, resentful, and cynical toward God. Even while we were dating, we were praying and thinking about how we could raise our kids to know and love Jesus.

Keep in mind that we did not have a tight and orderly child-rearing program worked out to guarantee that our children would grow up to love God. When we got married, we had some goals and dreams, but we lacked a parenting system to make them
