Erica hunched over her laptop, squinting at the screen. Not because of poor eyesight, but because of what she saw. She was poking around upm, her favorite JavaScript package manager, searching for random code to mess around with. Nestled in the search results was the name AssesJS next to the author in smaller letters, and a description underneath with the version.

She giggled. That’s a weird name for a package, she muttered to herself. Yet, it was upm, where people used all kinds of names and humor for their contributions.

What did you say? asked Danielle, who was on her phone, lounging in her pajamas on her bed on the other side of the dorm room. Erica’s roommate hadn’t learned to ignore her soft ramblings when she was on her computer, despite being reminded more than once.

Erica shook her head, her eyes not leaving the screen. No, nothing.

But the more she looked at this package, the stranger it seemed. The description read: A toolkit for making someone fall in love with you.

She snickered. Yeah, right. She wondered what it really did. The author’s name was eviltfoverlord. Sounded ominous.

She clicked AssesJS to get a closer look. Its page had the usual basic instructions and info down the side. There was only one author and no recent downloads, it seemed. That made sense; it was version 1.0.0, after all.

Erica sighed. There was no example code except for the obligatory require call to import the package into one’s own code, which was as much obvious as it was unhelpful. Below the short gray box were the words: See package source code for more details.

Ugh, she grumbled, earning a glance from Danielle, but clicked through to see the code anyway. She was curious.

The free software license popped up first. That was odd. She was almost positive she hadn’t seen a package on upm do that before. The text was rather short, having just a few paragraphs, and her eyes happened to catch part of a line on their way to the confirmation button at the bottom:

. . . in no event shall any author or copyright holder be liable for damages arising out of the use or inability to use the software . . .

Blah, blah, blah. She snorted a little. As if any
