The Marine Voyage - Rebecca Zane
Chapter 1
I sip my cherry lemonade with a sigh as my sister continues pleading with me.
Please, please, pretty please with a cherry on top?
Kate pleads, her brown eyes boring into my green ones.
I was on a beach chair relaxing for once. Usually I was neck deep in work, but finally took my friends’ advice and planned a break. Today, I was on San Pedro. I usually came here to fish and observe marine life, hence my career as a marine biologist.
Why can’t I come with you? We could have lots of fun! I mean, sisters are supposed to bond. But you’re gone so much, I feel like an only child. Mom and Dad would agree with me!
Kate continues her ranting and I sigh. She was right, after all. I was gone too much, and to be honest, I really missed my family. But their location in another country, also known as Canada, wasn’t exactly easy to get to.
My sister, on the other hand, was the exact opposite of me. Not only did she have my father’s looks with me my mom’s, but she was as carefree as I was strict. Kate loved travelling and helping children in different countries all across the world. And yet, she got to see the family more than me.
You know what?
I finally respond. Kate’s eyes fill with hope at the statement that I was to make. If you can pass the vitals test, you can tag along with me.
Kate squeals and reaches over to me.
No, don’t, Kate-
I end abruptly as Kate pulls me in a great bear hug.
This is my reward for agreeing with you? I am so gonna regret this.
I had just agreed to let my older sister come with me on a submarine expedition thousands of feet underwater for weeks, with no contact above ground. What’s not to regret?
Sorry sis,
Kate says as she pulls away. I’m just so excited! I finally get to see real mermaids!
she jokes. I roll my eyes and continue sipping on my lemonade.
The vitals test wasn’t a requirement, but I thought it would be fun to watch. Kate usually gets tired after airplane trips, and becomes extremely lazy. So when it comes to the physical portion of the test, well, let’s just say I’ll be bringing a camera.
I finish up my drink and get up. It was time for some fishing.
Chapter 2
My name is Kelly. Well, was. Now I’m mostly referred to as Dr. Shelby. Has a nice ring to it, don’t you think? Growing up surrounded by ice, I was always drawn to all the sea life. Not to mention almost breaking down in tears whenever we had fish for dinner.
When I grew up, I pursued my dream of studying the sea, and eventually found a good position examining evolution, and any signs of it. I enjoyed my job, but it sent me on trips that took weeks, sometimes even months.
There’s not much to my looks. Slightly wavy black hair with green eyes. I’m not big on style, either. I just stick with what’s comfortable. That, and my uniform.

I put my toiletries bag into my suitcase and zip it up. I turn to see Kate in the doorway.
Took you long enough,
I say to her. Are you done packing?
Of course not,
she scoffs. By the way, do you think wearing blue underwater seems weird?"
If that’s why you’re here, then you can turn around and scoot back to your room. Fish are my forte, and fashion yours.
I reply. Kate scowls and shuffles back to her room next door.
I then turn back to my suitcase and make sure all the pockets are closed and shift around in my clothes. Even in the fall, Mexico is hot. I turn around again to see my sister standing in my doorway. Again.
What is it this time?
Do you think bringing a blazer is too fancy?
she asks and I sigh. Honestly, with these questions.
Do you seriously ant me to answer?
I say, gesturing to my soda tee. Getting the gesture, Kate turns around and goes back to her room.
Sitting on my bed, I hear noises of boxes moving around. Soon after, Kate appears in my doorway, yet again, with a tribal print dress.
Standing up, I point to the hallway behind her.
Out. Now.
Frowning, Kate turns around looking defeated and disappears inside her room. Victory.
I sigh and pinch the bridge of my nose in frustration. This woman will drive me to the brink of madness.
I pick up my suitcase and drag it into the hallway, near the front door. Deciding I need fresh air, I walk onto the front porch and breathe in the herbal air. Mexico sure does smell nice at times.
The door opens behind me, and Kate walks out with a white sundress on. Her face turns red as the heat hits her.
If you tell me you are done, I will personally kiss you.
I tell her.
Then pucker up!
She reaches towards me with her arms stretched out.
Stop! I was only kidding!
I screech. Kate straightens up and begins laughing. After a while, I begin laughing along with her. She sure did bring out the goofy side of me.
A honk startles me and makes me jump. I turn around to see a jeep parked in front of our rental house.
Chapter 3
I walk off the porch and towards the jeep parked in front of our rental home.
I am here for a Dr. Shelby and guest?
says a man. He had a British accent, which explained his excessive sweating.
That’s me. And the guest is my sister. Kate!
I yell out to my sister to bring our suitcases out.
About that! I may need some help.
replies Kate.
I turn back to the driven and apologize. Sorry, If I turn around for one second, she’ll end up bringing three extra suitcases. One moment.
I jog up the stairs and into the house. I find my sister struggling with two suitcases, and luckily, one of them is mine.
"Is this all of
