About this ebook

When Tristan’s boyfriend invites him to the Guardian Hill for a date one night he doesn’t know what to expect. Certainly not the betrayal he ends up with as his boyfriend tries to use him to summon the guardian demon. But the demon has their own ideas about what makes a fitting offering and a terrified man is not it. The demon frees him instead.

Angry and hurt after the ordeal, Tristan returns to the hill again seeking not just answers but solace. Over time he and the demon develop a tentative friendship that may help him heal in more ways than one.

J. Emery

J. Emery is slowly writing their way through every fantasy trope imaginable. And if they can make it weirder and queerer while they do, that’s even better as far as they’re concerned. They spend their free time gaming, working on their cosplay creating skills, and drinking large quantities of tea, occasionally all at the same time. They have also been known to document their ridiculous levels of terror while watching horror movies on twitter as @mixeduppainter. Sometimes they even discuss upcoming projects. They have also written and self-published two queer short stories: An Offering of Plums and Help Wanted.

MATHIAS PULLS TRISTAN out into the woods, into the dark, laughing with eyes like onyx chips. Come along. Come along. I have a surprise for you. Which is an understatement because when they crest the next rise and the trees part around them, there’s a circle of candles and a hamper with a bottle of wine and grapes and other things Tristan can’t quite make out in the dimness. The Guardian Hill, transformed into a twinkling banquet.

What’s all this for? Tristan throws himself down on the grass and starts poking around in the basket before Mathias has even caught up with him. Mathias was always the slower of the two of them and he’s especially sluggish tonight, constantly hanging back as if something is on his mind. Tristan eyes him as he pops a grape into his mouth. What is it we’re celebrating? The grapes are tart and cold and he winces a little at the taste, so at odds with the warm summer night.

You. Mathias kneels next to him, reaching past to grab the bottle of wine. His eyes burn into Tristan’s as he leans closer. We’re celebrating you. Then after a beat, And me as well. I’ve made a real breakthrough on my research.

He doesn’t say more and Tristan doesn’t ask, only congratulates him and leaves it at that. Mathias has always been secretive about his research at the university.

Instead of coming closer, Mathias sits back on his knees and uncorks the bottle, taking the first swallow for himself. His lips are wet as he holds the bottle out after.

Tristan shakes his head. The darkness hides his flush of pleasure. You know I don’t care for it. He takes another grape instead and then a sliver of the cheese Mathias offers, looking around. But should we really be here? Not that it isn’t beautiful. The moon is large in the sky, visible through the treetops, and the breeze is warm, wrapping around him like silk. It is beautiful—that isn’t a lie—but he’s heard
