Cora's Introduction
My name is Cora Caulfield, and I'm an older lady now. But when I was a child, my last name was Dubois. That's French, pronounced dew-BWAH. I've begun sharing these stories from my childhood with you.
Jimmie Mosher, Laszlo Szep, George and Ruby Harris, and I had an exciting month in June of 1953. We were country neighbors; we all lived on or near East South River Road, which is east of Cherry Pit Junction and south of the Petit Sable River.
Jimmie's family had been in danger of losing his farm to the bank, but we didn't give up looking for the paper that would prove the property had been paid for. I told that story in The Secret Cellar.
We thought that was an exciting way to begin summer vacation, but then a mysterious man appeared in July.
I first met the hitchhiker when my dad gave him a ride, but it took four of us to solve his problem.

1. THE SPY IN BROWN
Cora Dubois was feeling crabby. She almost always got sick to her stomach if she didn't ride in the front seat. Nevertheless, she slid into the car's back seat, next to her mother, as she'd been told to do. She knew better than to be sassy and kept her thoughts to herself.
It was a pleasant afternoon in July, but Cora had spent almost the entire day in cars or buildings. She had been allowed to change out of her itchy church dress after Sunday dinner, but was told to put on a school dress for the afternoon. The family had driven to Fordberg, thirty miles south of where they lived, to visit family friends.
Friends of her father and mother anyway. There weren't any children there at all. Cora had found a book that looked interesting, and after politely answering too many adult questions, at least she'd been able to sit on the porch and read The Adventures of Robin Hood. It was an old book, but the friends didn't seem to have any newer ones for children. The cake was good, and she had been offered a cup of tea, which she liked, but her muscles ached to run and play.
Now they were on the way home, and her father decided to pick up the hitchhiker.
The man was standing at a crossroad. It was farther south than the area Cora was familiar with. He wore a suit, although it was rumpled. His necktie was straight, but the shirt collar was bent up on one side. An old brown leather satchel sat on the ground just below his left hand with a rolled-up brown plaid blanket tied across the top. He was resting all his weight on one leg, as if he'd been there a while and was tired. As the Dubois car approached, the man lifted his right hand toward the road and stuck out his thumb.
What do you think, Reeta? He looks down on his luck, but hardly dangerous,
Philippe Dubois said to his wife.
All right,
Cora's mother answered, but put him in the front seat with you, so we can keep an eye on him.
And that was why Cora had to move to the back, in the middle of a day that already had been long and boring. The man might be interesting, though, even if she did have to sit in back.
But it turned out he spoke almost no English. Philippe tried to engage him in conversation as they continued north, but he just shook his head when Cora's father asked him what
