This collection of eight short stories about young Starbright from the planet Om and his earthling friends Sky and Rose Heart promotes yoga values and advocates a healthy and peaceful approach to many childhood problems. The fantasy/sci-fi element of the visiting alien is here simply a storytelling device, allowing the author to distance the paragon/role-model/teacher, Starbright, from his "students," Sky and Rose.I am not a practitioner of yoga, as either a physical or spiritual regime. I picked this book up as part of my research into the ways in which classic fantasy and science-fiction plot elements are used to further ideological ends, or to teach spiritual values. I was prompted to begin this project by my investigation into fundamentalist Christian objections to certain aspects of the fantasy genre, and my observation that despite the concerns raised, "Christian" children's fiction frequently utilizes many of the same plot devices in order to sell books. I was curious to see how this played out with other belief systems...

Lifting Off to Planet Om

One bright fall morning, Sky and Rose were playing ball in their backyard. Suddenly, Rose stopped and dropped the ball. She stared upward toward the sun. A mysterious object was slowly coming down. Could it be? Look! she yelled. There’s a spaceship landing in the empty field!

Oh, come on, Rose, said Sky. You don’t really believe in spaceships. Rose couldn’t say a thing. She just stood there without moving an inch. Sky turned around. Was he ever surprised.

I can’t believe it! said Sky. Come on, Rose. Let’s go!

They hurried toward the field, half excited and half scared. The hatch of the spaceship slowly slid open. An Earth-like boy appeared with a bright star sparkling in him.

Hello! Who are you? asked the boy, smiling in a friendly way.

Uh…uh… I’m Sky Heart and this is my sister, Rose Heart. Sky felt he was in a dream. This can’t be real, he said to himself.

Who are you? asked Rose, charmed by the boy’s sparkling star.

I’m Starbright of Planet Om. I’ve come here to invite some Earthlings to our Star Family Fest. Would you like to come?

Sounds like fun! said Rose. But we’re not supposed to go anywhere with strangers.

Come on, Rose, said Sky. We’ll never get a chance like this again. Quick, run home and ask Dad and Mom!

But Mom’s at her Yoga class. Remember, it’s Saturday.

Then just ask Dad! yelled Sky.

Rose ran faster than ever. Dad! Dad! Can Sky and I go to Planet Om with Starbright?

Dad was on the internet. He looked over.

Okay, honey, replied Dad. He thought that his children were just playing a new game.

Thanks, Dad! Rose ran out the door.

What did Dad say? Can we go? asked Sky.

He said okay, replied Rose.

Great! said Starbright. Let’s jump aboard!

Inside the ship Shooting Star, Sky and Rose were amazed. Starbright sat behind a big panel with a keyboard and bunches of buttons, switches, and levers. Above the panel was a long screen with a rainbow design.

All systems are go for liftoff, announced Starbright. T minus 10 seconds and counting: 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. Ignition. We have liftoff.

As Starbright pressed the keys, the shades of color changed on the rainbow panel. I need to get these colors just right to keep the ship on course, said Starbright. He continued to press the keys. "Good. Now
